GENERAL EMERGENCIES

The supervisor on site or his/her representative will act on emergency


alarm or siren for all personnel and people on site to evacuate the building
or premises.

All employees to assemble at the assemble point.

Superintendent/Supervisors with the help of their daily attendance list will


ensure all staff on his section is accounted for.

When all employees are accounted for, the Regional Manager or his
designated nominee will issue further instructions at the assembly point,
employees will be informed as to what type of evacuation took place.

If all is in order, employees will be instructed to their respective workplace

During evacuation, the supervisor in charge, together with his/her trained


emergency personnel will inspect all buildings.

In the case of causalities, the supervisor together with the trained first
aiders will take care of the injured. If necessary an ambulance must be
summoned.

The supervisor in charge must decide on the relevant emergency


assistance or authorities that must be summoned for an incident.

All evacuates must assemble at the designated sites (assemble points). A


roll call will be conducted to account for all persons expected to be on site.

No persons will be allowed to leave the assemble points or to enter the


buildings until the emergency is under control.
FIRE
In the event of fire the buildings must be evacuated as per the Evacuation
Plan, personnel must assemble at the designated emergency assemble
point.

The supervisor or his/her representative must contact the Fire Brigade and
activate all alarms. The appointed fire fighters on site must assume their
designated duties of using the fire equipments on site, to contain or
minimize the spread of fire or extinguish the fire.

Once the Fire Brigade arrives on site the company fire marshals must
handover the firefighting to the Fire Brigade and follow the instructions of
the Fire Brigade. The Site Supervisor or his/her representative shall
provide a Hazchem code to the Fire Brigade in case of a HCS involved in
fire.

Intruder
In the event of a hostile intruder in the workplace, the witness shall
immediately contact the Supervisor if possible.

If the employees is caught by the intruder, he/she must never look at


him/her in the eyes, obey all commands and try to remain as calm as
possible. Do not appear to pose a challenge, and be submissive.

Never arbitrarily activate any building alarm to evacuate a building unless


directed to do so by the Supervisor, as this may alert the intruder(s) of
pending response activities, and worsen the situation.

Once the Police arrive, obey all of their commands. This may involve all
employees made to put their hands in the air. This is done for safety
reasons, and once circumstances are evaluated by the police, they will
give further directions to follow.

During building evacuations, employees are required to assist the


handicapped in exiting the building. Remain calm and do not panic.
Severe Weather Events

In the event of a severe weather warning an alert will be issued by the


Regional Manager to the entire Region. The alert will advise if work is
suspended and whether employees need to make travel plans.
The Supervisor or his/her representative must contact the Disaster
Management Department and provide them with addresses of the location.

Employees shall take cover until the Disaster Management is on site.

BOMB THREAT

In the event of bomb threat the person who receives the information on the
planted bomb on site must inform the supervisor on site.

If the supervisor is readily available, the person who receives the


information on bomb threat will activate the emergency alarm or siren for
all personnel and visitors to evacuate the building. The supervisor or the
person who receives the bomb threat must contact the Police immediately.

The Bomb bag will be handed to the police service.

HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL SPILLS

In the event of a hazardous chemical spill, the person in charge must


contact his/her immediate supervisor.

The person in charge must contact the Fire Brigade giving the details of
the chemical spill, including but not limited to the name of the chemical,
the form of chemical (liquid, solid or gas), the extent of the spill, etc.

EXCESSIVE GAS RELEASE/LEAK

In the event of excessive gas release e.g. chlorine gas, the person in
charge must activate the emergency alarms or siren for everybody on site
to evacuate the site.

Evacuation must be to the furthest possible point from the source, the gas
leak and in the direction opposite the identified wind direction.

The Tswasa Supervisor or his/her representative must call the


Netcare911 air ambulance services.

The trained personnel using the appropriate safety protective equipment


must with caution locate the source of the leak and possible stop or
minimize the leak.
ACCIDENTS

In the event of major accidents the person in charge or one of the co-
workers must contact the immediate supervisor.

The Tswasa Supervisor or his/her representative must call the Netcare911


air ambulance services.

VEHICLE INCIDENT
In the case of a vehicle crash the driver shall notify the supervisor/
Transport coordinator/ SHE Officer.

The Supervisor or contacted employee shall immediately assist contact to


the local Police to notify them about the accident and to get medical
assistance if there are any injuries.

SNAKE BITES

In the event of snake bite the victim must be kept as calm as possible.

The person in charge must call the hospital or the doctors to ensure that
they have on premises the right antidote for the identified snake.

The victim of the snake bite must, without delay, be transported to the
doctor or medical facility that has antidote for that particular snake.

The first aider may, if possible, administer necessary first aid, while the
victim is being transported for medical assistance.

The Tswasa Supervisor or his/her representative must call the Netcare911


air ambulance services.
