Little Jyoti
An Amigurumi Indian Elephant

Meet Little Jyoti- Jyoti is a Hindi name meaning light. She is a painted Indian elephant
celebrating the Holi Festival and the arrival of Spring.

This is an intermediate pattern and contains the Tools and Materials


following terms and abbreviations:
Worsted weight yarn in light gray for
BLO- back loops only elephant,
ch- chain DK weight yarn in 3-4 different shades
for flower blanket, tassels, anklets and
dc- double crochet forehead adornment
hdc- half double crochet 8 mm black safety eyes
F/5 (3.75mm), D/3 (3.25mm), C/2
sc- single crochet (2.75mm) crochet hooks or hooks needed
sc2tog- single crochet 2 sts together to obtain finished sizes
sequins and beads or other desired
sk- skip decorations
sl st- slip stitch thin wire for trunk (a twist tie from the
produce dept works well)
st(s)- stitches
Thread, pins, tapestry and embroidery

Stitch markers, scissors
all purpose glue
Measurements: tip of trunk to backend: 8 (21cm) shoulder to bottom of foot-5(13cm)

Trunk (make this first)


Finished size: 4 (11cm) long
Working in continuous rounds with worsted weight yarn, F hook and stuffing very lightly as you
crochet,
ch 2
Round 1: sc 6 in 2nd ch from hook (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12)
Rounds 3-7: sc 12
Round 8: sc 10, sc2tog (11)
Round 9: sc 11
Round 10: sc 9, sc2tog (10)
Round 11: sc 10
Round 12: sc 8, sc2tog (9)
Round 13: sc 9
Round 14: sc 7, sc2tog (8)
Round 15: sc 8
Round 16: sc 6, sc2tog (7)
Rounds 17-20: sc 7
Round 21: sc 5, sc2tog (6)
Round 22: sc 6
Insert thin wire and bend into desired position.
Tie off and weave in ends.

Lower Lip
With worsted weight yarn and F hook,
ch 4
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across (3) ch 1, turn
Row 2: sc2tog, sc 1 (2) ch 1, turn
Row 3: sc 2tog (1) ch 1, turn
Row 4: sl st to finish, tie off and weave in ends

Ears (make 2)
Working in continuous rounds with worsted weight yarn and F hook,
ch 2
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, 2 sc in next st* repeat 6 times (18)
Round 4: sc 18
Now working in rows,

Head and Body


Working in continuous rounds with worsted weight yarn and F hook,

Round 3: *sc 1, 2 sc in next st* repeat 5 times (15)
Round 4: *sc 2, 2 sc in next st* repeat 5 times (20)
Round 5: *sc 3, 2 sc in next st* repeat 5 times (25)
Round 6: *sc 4, 2 sc in next st* repeat 5 times (30)
Round 7: *sc 5, 2 sc in next st* repeat 5 times (35)

Sew Trunk onto head, put in eyes, sew lower lip and ears in place. Lightly stuff head-Do not overstuff.

Front Legs (make 2)


With worsted weight yarn and F hook, (substitute with a magic ring if desired.)
ch 4
Round 1: sl st to 1st ch to form a ring, ch 2 (this will count as 1 dc), 9 dc in loop, sl st to 2 nd ch (10) pull
end of yarn to close up hole
Round 2: in BLO, sc 10
Rounds 3-12: in both loops, sc 10
Tie off and weave in ends

Back Legs (make 2)


With worsted weight yarn and F hook, (substitute with a magic ring if desired.)
ch 4
Round 1: sl st to 1st ch to form a ring, ch 2 (this will count as 1 dc), 9 dc in loop, sl st to 2 nd ch (10) pull
end of yarn to close up hole
Round 2: in BLO, sc 10
Rounds 3-10: in both loops, sc 10
Tie off and weave in ends

Tail
Begin with about an 1 (approx.4cm) tail
ch 10
Leave a long tail to weave back into chains with tapestry needle.
Tie a knot at base of 1st ch.
With tip of the tapestry needle, tease out the ends of yarn to fray. Trim ends to a desired length

Assembly
Stuff legs with fiberfill
Pin and sew front legs onto elephant body
Pin and sew back legs onto elephant body
Pin and sew tail onto back end of elephant body
Jyoti's Flower Blanket

Flowers (Crochet 14 flowers in 3-4 different colors of DK weight yarn)


With D hook,

ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, pull end of yarn to close up ring.


Sl st in next st and repeat *ch 2, 3 dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in next st* to make 5 petals. Tie off,
knot ends of yarn together tightly, weave in ends.

Tassels (make 2)
Using photographs as a guide:

Arrange 10-12 strands of yarn measuring about 2-3 (6-8cm) side by side and tie with
another length of yarn. Make a tight knot in the middle. (fig.1)

Fold the tied bundle in half and tie another piece of yarn around yarn strands about a inch
from the fold, making a tight knot. (figs. 2 and 3)

Snip ends of tassel to an even length. (fig.4)

Assembly
Using the photographs as a guide:
Arrange flowers as shown in fig.5 and sew edges of flowers together.

Sew tassels to edge of flowers as shown in fig. 5
Sew or glue sequins and beads to flowers in any desired configuration.

Jyoti's Anklets (make 4)


Using the photographs as a guide:

With a C hook, chain stitch 3 different colors of yarn together (figs.6 & 7)

ch about 18-19 sts to fit around ankles. (Measure as you go to


make sure it fits around the ankle.)
Sl st to 1st ch to form a ring. Tie a knot to finish (figs. 8 & 9)

Forehead Adornment
Using photographs as a guide:
Make three leaves in DK weight colors of choice and D hook,
ch 6
1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next, 2 dc in next, 1 hdc in next, sl st in last st. Fasten off and
knot ends together. Weave in ends.
Sew leaves together as shown in fig. 10
Sew adornment onto forehead.
Glue or sew any other desired beads and/or sequins
onto Jyoti.
