Torque specification: 120 Nm

Mounting tires

The tires are installed as usual, but note the following:

Before removing the tire, always let the air out by

unscrewing valve insert.

Determine remaining life of sensor battery using

vehicle diagnosis, testing, and information system
VAS 5051 and replace if necessary.

- Make sure there is no contact between wheels and tire

pressure monitoring sensor during installation work.

- When cleaning disc wheel (rim), tire pressure must not

come into contact with water or be blown with pressurized
air.

Pressing off tires

- Press outside and inside of wheels against metal valve.

Dismounting tires

- Place wheel on tire mounting equipment so that wheel

valve is in front of the mounting head.

- Dismount wheel.

Mounting tires

- Place wheel on tire mounting equipment so that tire valve

is stands opposite of mounting head.

- Install tires on wheels and fill to specified pressure. Then

balance wheel.

- Install wheel and tighten.

44 - 3

Wheel alignment
General information

Wheel alignment must only performed using VW/Audi-

approved wheel alignment equipment!

Vehicle alignment checks must always include both front

and rear axles.

Otherwise, the center position of the steering rack can not

be guaranteed!

- Perform vehicle alignment using the alignment computer.

All information needed for a vehicle alignment can be

found in the alignment computer.

Current data "Updates" are available in VW Service Net.

Note:

Wheel alignment should not be performed before the

vehicle has completed 1000 to 2000 km as then the
coil springs have had time to settle.

The individual specifications should be followed as

exactly as possible when making adjustments.

Wheel alignment is necessary when:

Vehicle shows handling problems.

Components were damaged and have been

replaced.

Axle components were removed.

Wheel alignment . 2 6

Tire wear patterns are uneven.

Vehicles with Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP)

If the steering wheel was repositioned, the steering

angle sensor G85 basic setting must be checked!

Measurement requirements

- Vehicle engine must be cooled down prior to adjustment

- Wheel compensation must be conducted

Wheel alignment . 6 6

- In the following procedure, the distance between the

lower edge of the fender and wheel hub center must be
measured

- Tires must be inflated to correct pressure

- Vehicle must be at normal ride height

- Do not interrupt measurement/adjustment or pause for

long periods. Fluctuations in temperature may cause ride
height to change if vehicle is left standing for longer periods

Ride height measurement

Rear Specification + Tolerance - Tolerance

Front 407 5 5
Rear 401 5 5

- Install brake pedal depressor

- Start engine

- Set vehicle ride height control to high, then lower and then
back to normal.

- Turn engine off

- Measure front and rear ride height between underside of

wheel fender and center of wheel hub.

- If ride height measurement is incorrect then adjust with

Tester VAS 5051 is required.

- If ride height is within tolerance, de-activate the ride

control with tester VAS 5051.

Vehicle data sticker

Explanation of "PR no." on vehicle data plate

Depending on powertrain and equipment, various

suspensions are installed. They are indicated by the PR
numbers.

The PR numbers determine the specified value application

for the vehicle.

The suspension installed in a vehicle is documented on the

vehicle data sticker for front axle using relevant PR
number.

The vehicle data sticker is located in spare wheel well and

in Maintenance booklet.
Spring blocks, installing . 1 3

Spring blocks, installing

Vehicles with malfunctioning self-levelling suspension will
not be set at normal ground clearance.

The vehicle can no longer be driven.

For example, to drive the vehicle onto an auto transporter

or a vehicle hoist, spring blocks must be installed.

That will raise the vehicles ground clearance.

Caution!

With spring blocks installed, normal driving is not

possible.

The vehicle may only be maneuvered back and

forth.

When maneuvering the vehicle, the steering

wheel must not be turned more than one
revolution clockwise or counterclockwise from
center.

Front axle spring blocks, installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Spring blocks T10156/1 for left side of vehicle

Spring blocks T10156/2 for right side of vehicle

Front axle spring blocks are different for each side of the
vehicle, and their specific usage is indicated on them.

- Turn front wheels so they are pointing straight ahead.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the

following:

- Code and calibrate control module Vehicle Diagnosis,

Testing and Information System VAS 5051 .

Actual tire pressure, storing

Fundamentally all wheels (including spare wheel) must be

inflated to absolutely same pressure.

After repair work on a wheel, tire pressure of all wheels

including spare wheel must be checked.

Storing tire inflation pressure

- Set inflation tire pressure on all wheels, including spare

wheel, for specified pressure

Repair Manual, Maintenance

- Enter actual tire pressure into system via central display

and control module.

Checking remaining service life of battery in sensor

- Connect Vehicle Diagnosis, Measurement and

Information System VAS 5051 and continue switching until
"Functions/Component selection" is shown.

Then

- Press "Suspension, Wheels, Steering" .

- Select "Tire pressure monitor" .

- Press "01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD)" .

bar, and the remaining service life of the battery in months.

Check remaining sensors by repeating the procedure.

Wheel centering seat, protecting against corrosion . 1 1

44 - 6

Wheel centering seat, protecting against corrosion

Valid for light metal- and steel wheels

When changing tire, centering seat should be sprayed with

Wax spray D 322 000 A2

in order to prevent corrosion between wheel centering seat

and wheel.

- Remove wheel.

- Always clean wheel centering seat at wheel hub and

center of rim.

- Apply wax in area of centering - arrow - using a brush.

Wax new centering seat - arrow - and not rim contact

surfaces. As a consequence, the brakes would become
contaminated while driving and thereby result in poor
braking.

Caution!

Wheel bolts, wheel and hub contact surfaces and

wheel hub threads must not be waxed. Never apply
lubricants or anti-corrosion treatment to threads on
wheel bolts.

- Install wheel and tighten 44-2, Wheel mounting .
