Comments relating to the new edition of

DIN EN 10025 part 1 6

for hot rolled products of structural steel

The following comments have been prepared by a technical working group of the Walzstahl-
Vereinigung. They are based on the new edition 2005 of DIN EN 10025.

This comments have been prepared for customers in the processing and distribution sectors
and staff in the plate manufacturers mills.

Structural steels cover one of the largest fields of application for rolled steel products,
particularly for heavy plate.
The relative large variety of steel grades is mainly due to different techniques of rolling and
further (heat) treatment.

This new edition of DIN EN 10025 for the first time incorporates virtually all construction
relevant steel grades in one single standard in part 2 to 6, depending on production method.
These parts replace the so far applicable corresponding standards.

This new standard takes also into account the requirements for a Harmonized European
Standard.

These comments are also available in German

General Delivery Conditions for
all parts of the new standard EN 10025-1:2004-11 2005-02

With the exception of a few remarks concerning long products the following comments
are covering flat products only. Consequently, no further reference is made to the new
defined steel grade S450J0 in EN 10025 part 2, only applicable for long products.
The following comments refer to the basic requirements of the standard. They do not take
into account possible options. All mentioned limiting values for the chemical composition
refer exclusively to the heat analysis.

Attention: Due to the transition to the new short names of the EN 10025:2004-11
changes of the material numbers may occur.

Note: As in all new EN standards the unit N/mm is now designated as MPa. This means:
1 MPa = 1 N/mm

EN 10025-1:2004-11 (DIN EN 10025-1:2005-4)

Hot rolled products of structural steels
Part 1: General technical delivery conditions

In this part are summarized all general requirements from the separate parts of the
preceding standards of EN 10025, EN 10113-1(for EN 10113-2 and EN 10113-3), EN
10155 and EN 10137-1(for EN 10137-2).

The European Commission has set up the CPD (Construction Products Directive
89/106/EEC). In order to correspond with the essential requirements of the CPD,
annexes B and ZA have been added to part 1 of the EN 10025, by which the new EN
10025 will become a Harmonized European Standard.

Annex B (normative) relates to the conformity assessment of paragraph 14 of the

standard.

Annex ZA (informative) contains

1. Elements of the CPD which are relevant to the EN 10025.
2. The rules to be respected by the steel manufacturer for the attestation of conformity of
products

Remark: In the future all products for constructions defined in the CPD will have to fulfil
the requirements as defined in the Harmonized Standards and have to be delivered with
the CE-mark. Delivery with CE-mark has to be ordered. Proof is furnished by CE-mark
indication on the accompanying Inspection Certificate
EN 10025-2:2004-11 (DIN EN 10025-2:2005-02)
Hot rolled products of structural steels
Part 2: Technical delivery conditions for non-alloy structural steels

Main changes compared to the preceding EN 10025

1. Steel production by the open hearth (Siemens-Martin) process is no longer permitted.

Rimming steel is not permitted either. Consequently, the designations for this kind of desoxidation (G1 and
G2 for steel grade S 235JR) could be eliminated.

2. The delivery condition is generally at the discretion of the manufacturer if no specific

delivery condition is ordered.
That means the steel manufacturer can deliver in the conditions:
as rolled (+ AR) or
normalized (+N, normalized or normalizing rolled)
The delivery condition has to be mentioned in the certificate.
Remark: Only for long products and continuously rolled products the delivery
condition TM (+M, thermo-mechanically rolled) is permitted.

Besides that freedom for the manufacturer exists for the purchaser an option to order the steel
product in the normalized or as rolled condition. In that case the symbol "+N or "+AR has to be
indicated together with the steel grade at the time of the order. The product has to be marked with
the "+ N" or "+AR".
Remark: Depending on steel grade and plate thickness technical limitations exist with this
provison. Consultation with the steel manufacter is recommended in this respect.
An option to order the TM delivery condition does not exist.
With the new "speaking" delivery condition identifiers the old designations "G3"
resp. "G4" are eliminated.

3. The steel grade S185 and the engineering steels E295, E335 and E360 which have
no toughness values defined are neither allowed to be marked with the CE mark nor may be used in
corresponding steel constructions (unchanged from previous standard). Thus the provisions in part 1 are not
applicable.

4. For steel grades suitable for galvanizing three classes with limited Si-contents (< = 0,03
%, 014 - 0,25 % and < = 0,35 %) have been introduced. Ordering the first two classes will
partly lead to an increase of the admissible carbon equivalent (CEV).

5. Maximum values for the carbon equivalent CEV are now mandatory and no longer
optional.

6. The maximum admissible Cu-content has been increased to 0,55 % (i.e. above the old 0,40% for distinction
between alloyed and unalloyed steels).

7. The maximum values for P and S have been reduced for all steel grades for construction .

8. For all steel grades of the type J2 or K2 the maximum plate thickness has been increased from 250 to 400
mm, for S185 from 100 to 250 mm. The thickness range of steel grades with improved cold formability has
been increased from 20 to 30 mm.

9. For the steel grades S355 the minimum tensile strength has been reduced to the thickness range > = 3 to <
= 100 mm from 490 to 470 MPa to be in line with the normalized fine grain steels of part 3 and the TM
rolled qualities of part 4.
Remark: Thereby it is now possible for the design engineers to calculate up to 40 mm thickness with only one
value of 470 MPa irrespective of whether they intend to use the steel grades S 355... according to EN 10025 part
2, part 3, part 4 or part 5.

10. For the steel grades S235 the minimum tensile strength for all thicknesses from 3 mm upwards has been
increased by 10 to 20 MPa compared to former values.

Hot rolled products of structural steels
Part 3: Technical delivery conditions for normalized / normalizing rolled fine
grain structural steels

Main changes compared to the preceding EN 10113-2

1. For steel grades suitable for galvanizing three classes with limited Si-contents (< = 0,03
%, 014 - 0,25 % and < = 0,35 %) have been introduced. Ordering the first two classes will
lead to an increase of the admissible carbon equivalent (CEV).

2. Maximum values for the carbon equivalent CEV are now mandatory and no longer
optional. For the steel grades S460N and S460NL CEV values are now defined.

3. The maximum Cu contents have been increased from 0,35 % to 0,55 % for the S275
and S355 grades and reduced from 0,70 % to 0,55 % for the S420 and S460 grades.

4. The maximum values for P and S have been reduced.

5. The maximum plate thicknesses have been increased for the steel grades S275, S355
and S420 from 150 mm to 250 mm and for the S460 grades from 100 to 200 mm.
For the S 460 grades mechanical properties for all thickness ranges are now defined

fine grain structural steels

Main changes compared to the preceding EN 10113-3

1. For steel grades suitable for galvanizing three classes with limited Si-contents (< = 0,03
%, 014 - 0,25 % and < = 0,35 %) have been introduced. Ordering the first two classes will
lead to an increase of the admissible carbon equivalent (CEV).

2. Maximum values for the carbon equivalent CEV are now mandatory and no longer
optional.
For the grades S420M/ML and S460M/ML CEV-values are defined for all thickness
ranges.

3. For all steel the maximum Cu - contents are aligned to the steel grades in part 2 and
part 3. The maximum Ni - contents are now 0.50% for S 355 and 0.80% for S420 and
S460.

4. The maximum values for P and S have been reduced.

5. For all qualities the maximum plate thickness is increased from 63 mm to 120 mm.

6. For the grade S355M/ML the minimum tensile strength values have been increased
from 450 MPa to 470 MPa for thicknesses <= 40 mm. (see remark EN 10025-2)

order. The product has to be marked with the "+ N" or "+AR".
Remark: Depending on steel grade and plate thickness technical limitations exist with this
provision. Consultation with the steel manufacturer is recommended in this respect.

With the new "speaking" delivery condition designations the old designations "G1"
resp. "G2" could be eliminated.

2. Maximum values for the carbon equivalent CEV are now mandatory and no longer
optional.

3. The maximum values for P and S have been reduced (with the exception of the Phosphor-
alloyed grades S355J0WP/J2WP).

4. The maximum thickness has been increased for all grades from 100 mm to 150 mm
with the exception of the Phospor alloyed S355J0WP/J2WP which remains limited to
12 mm.

5. For the S355 grades the minimum tensile strength values have been reduced and for
the S235 grades increased the same as in part 2 of the standard.
