TECHNOLOGY PROPOSAL

Charlotte Elementary School

Position

It is no longer sufficient for students to have less access to technological tools than the
teacher, nor is it enough for any one suite of software to serve as the zenith for technology
mastery. For student performance to approximate student potential, students need access to a
constantly evolving array of technological tools and activities that demand problem-solving,
decision-making, teamwork, and innovation.
In todays society we live in a technology and media environment that gives
access to an abundance of in information and knowledge, the very same that is rapidly changing
at an astonishing rate. It has changed the ways we work, learn, communicate, and how we live. If
by removing technology from our schools all together then we are doing a disservice to our
students, from whom are the very hands that hold the future, in part we are condemning them to
fail.
The use of technology is in our everyday life and consists in the majority of the
workforce. In some way a computer, laptop, tablet and program are being utilized. We as adults
have the understanding to these technology tools, but we need to look back at how we were
taught, how long of frustration did we have learning to implement that particular tool in order for
us to be competent and provide service in our own careers and jobs. We have the ability to
alleviate the pressures from incorrect to correct use of technology for our future and having them
to be prepared in the work force and careers that are out today.

Technology is used not only in majority of the work force but in our daily lives as well.
Its how we pay our bills, go shopping, and spend our leisure time. Companies are going
paperless, the benefits by way to incorporate that method is that the companies use less paper,
which in part saves trees and helps our environment, but as well saves them money. Shopping
has become a substantial easier task by using wireless and the internet. In that way you are able
to complete that chore simply at home, on your laptop, tablet or on your cell phone. Then the
purchases are delivered to your door. Leisure time is spent chatting with a friend on Facebook,
reading a great novel from your Kindle, or watching a movie from your laptop. All ways that we
incorporate technology in our society.

We need to stay on the path of following with technology for our students. They are to be
the next step in providing new jobs, innovation, creativity, and resources for our future to follow
and reinvent. As educators we are here to provide our students a path for a bright future, the
future has been and will be technology. We need to provide those resources for our students to
communicate, collaborate, make decisions and problem solve. These will be the skills needed to
sustain ones self in our modern society. The 21st Century learners deserve to walk out into our
society ready and prepared for what is ahead of them, and with us showing them that path they
have the opportunity for success.

Identifying Standards

The National Edcational Technology Standards (NETS) are six different performance
indicators which are generalizded guidelines to what students goal to accomplish. They are
Creativity and Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, Research and Information
Fluency, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making, and Technology Operations
and Concepts. The National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) were published by the
International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). They are what the State of Nevada
needs to follow for each of their objectives based on the skills and knowledge that the students
will be learning. The goal for the standards is for the students to learn effectively, live effienctly
in an increasing technological soceity.
Nevada Computer and Technology Standards are another set of standards that the State
of Nevada must follow in order for student to achieve performance and learning. These standrds
are more detailed in comparison to the National Educational Technology Standards. They
describe by performance level indicators on where the student level is being held with
technology. The State standards follow suite with the National standards. As example the
National standard #1 Creativity and Innovation-Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct
knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. The State standard
would follow in more detail as Communicate information and ideas to peers and parents using
digital text and illustrations. In by starting with choosing the National level standard and
deciding what skill they want to succeed at, are the teachers able to move to the State level
standards and get a more detail take on the skills that they want to accomplish.
The Clark County School District standards are in reference to content standards where
the student is expected to have background in knowledge on using technological tools. This
refers too appropriate use to word processing, spreadsheet, datdabase, multimedia, and
telecommunications. The standards as well incorporate the use of the tools and processes,
recognizing systems, and evulating multicultural societies. The content standards can be used to
evaluate the students compentency in using technological tools. The standards are to be
introduced, reinforced and mastered by the student. In the framework of these standards,
educators can plan technology-based activities in which the students goal is to learn,
communicate and achieve life skills. There are four levels to the content standards which are
exceeds standards, meet standards, approaches standards, and below standards. In the break
down of these standards they are formatted to easily follow for not only the educators, but for the
parents and students as well.
The three forms of technology standards work together to collobrate an effective plan for
the students. The National standards gives us the start to our lesson plans of generalized
concepts, the State standards gives us a more detail on what skills are expected and to be met at
that particular grade level, and the district as well in reference to the skills that are expected but
more in part to the technological tools that are provided. In part with the tools that are provided
from all three levels of standards, the students will become very capable technological users.
Lesson Plan

Name of lesson: Safari Friends (Science)

Grade Level Appropriate K-1st Grade
Nevada Academic Content Standards: NETS(S)- #1 Creativity and Innovation: Students will
deomostrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and devlop innovative products and
processes using technology.

1.B.2.1 Create original works as a means of personal or group expression. Create an original
work using a variety of digital tools as a means of personal or group expression.

Additional Standards: Writing-K.W.1 Text types and purposes use a combination of drawing,
dictating and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell the reader the topic or the
name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or
book (e.g; My favorite book is. . .)

Speaking and Listening- K.SL.6: Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

Objective: Students will gain knowledge of Safari Animals. Students will create a picture of their
favorite Safari Animal by using Kid Pix 3D. Students will write 3 complete sentences. Students
will print their picture to retrieve. Students will present work in a group enviroment.

Materials: Laptops/ Tablets for each student, Kid Pix 3D, Printer, Projector, Internet access for
Safari Animals video, writing journals and pencils, Safari writing template (30 copies).

Suggested group size: 20-24

Procedures: 1. Students will take out their writing journals and pencils, make sure pencils are
sharpened. Before proceeding to have the students view Safari video, explain to the students on
what they are about to see and that in between each animal to take notes on their favorite Safari
animal. Proceed to the internet and use the website listed to PBS learning media the video will
start. Once the first animal has been seen, pause the video and do a quick review over that
animal. Make note on what was said in the video about that animal and relay it back to the
students. Observe to see what students are writing in their journals about that particular animal.
Follow this step with each animal on the video which are a total of 5. Once video is done proceed
to the next step.
2. The students will take out laptops/tablets, boot up and then click on the Kid Pix 3D icon. Once
Kid Pix 3D opens up there is a small video, once done the Enter Name box appears which looks
like this:
With teacher, Grandma, or volunteer
assistance, have the children type in their
name and click on the Go (blue) button.

A blank canvas will appear with

drawing/painting tools that looks like this:
The students have their favorite Safari animal
chosen, here they will start to create their
ideal image of that animal. On the overhead
point out to the students all the drawing tools,
paint tools, how to change colors, and the
eraser. Have them start with choosing a
drawing tool. The picture of the pencil they
will click on to bring up the drawing tools.
The colors are choosen from the bottom left
corner of a paint splot to begin their drawing.

The teacher will need to walk around and observe the students progess, pass positive notes about
how well there are doing, and what great drawings that are coming to life. Assistance will be
needed through this process as well. Have Grandma/ volunteer to walk around as well in
assistance. A time frame will need to be set for the students to accomplish this task in order for
this project to be accomplished in a timely manner let the students know how much time left they
have through the drawing process. Remind them that we want their pictures done in order to be
printed out today.Once the pictures are completed we will direct the students to click on the
printer button to be printed out. A finished drawing/painting project may look like this as printed
out.
Continued Lesson Plan: The students will take out their writing journals to their notes about the
Safari animals from the video. On the writing template that has already been copied for each
student to have. There are extras in case of accidents. The student is then to write 3 complete
sentences about their favorite Safari animal. The beginning sentence may begin as My favorite
Safari animal is __________ . The begininng sentence and a list of descriptive words on the
board about each of the animals will help the students draw more volcabulary to their sentences.
Once the writing is done have the students attach their writing to their picture that was printed
out. The students then will proceed to read their opinion about their favorite Safari animal to the
class.

Writing Sample (Student):

Teacher Assessment: Observe and grade with the drawing/painting of the Safari animal: Color
resemblance, and shape to their chosen animal. Did the student follow directions on completing
the drawing/painting assignment? Writing: Grading appropriately to capitalization, punctuation,
spelling, and spacing. Did the student complete 3 sentences and is the handwriting legible to
read. Speaking and Listening: Speaking audibly and expressing thoughts on their favorite Safari
animal.
