SYMBIOSIS

Commensalism, Mutualism, and Parasitism

Todays Learning Goals
SWBAT define the term
symbiosis.
SWBAT discuss
similarities and
differences between
mutualism,
commensalism, and
parasitism and provide
examples of each.
DO NIZZLE
Draw conclusions about the
pictures below. What do they
have in common, how are they
different?
What do you think this is?
2-NOW How do you think it helps describe a
symbiotic relationship?
How does this picture help the flower?
DO NOW (Ecosystem Review)
The diagram shows to
the right, shows a food
web in a salt marsh.

Which organisms in
the food web belongs
to the trophic level
that provides the most
amount of energy to
the ecosystem?
2-NOw
Which will most likely
occurs if the grouse
population decreases?
A. Butterfly population
increases
B. Red-Tailed Hawk would
increase
C. Emigration of grizzly
bears and deer will
decrease
D. Competition between
grizzly bear and deer
will increase.
What is Symbiosis?

Symbiosis: A relationship where two

organisms/species are living closely
together in an ecosystem.

Sym= together + Bio= life

There are THREE different types

of Symbiotic Relationships.

MUTUALISM, COMMENSALISM,
AND PARASITISM

Symbiosis

Parasitism

Mutualism

Commensalism
Mutualism
A relationship in which BOTH + +
organisms benefit.

Clownfish and the Sea Anemone

Pufferfish and Cleaner Fish
Cattle Egret and Water Buffalo
Bees and Flowers
Nemos First Day of School

This scene from Disneys

Finding Nemo shows an
example of a real life
symbiotic relationship.

- Pay close attention

to the end of the clip
when Marlin (Nemos
Dad) says

Ahh Ahh Ahh, you forgot to

brush. Do you want this
anemone to sting you?
The Real Finding Nemo

Nemo is a Clownfish.

He lives in a Sea Anemone (a

close relative of a coral and
jellyfish).

They both live in a symbiotic

relationship, and both help
each other.
Commensalism
A relationship in which one
organism BENEFITS and one
organisms is UNHARMED

Bird in a tree
Burdocks attaching to animals
Barnacle on a Turtle/Whale
+ -

Parasitism
A relationship between two
organisms in which one
BENEFITS and the other is
HARMED

A tick feeding off of a dog.

Mosquito biting a humans
skin.
The Bot Fly laying their
eggs inside a mammal for
protection.

Scenario #1
Goby Fish and Shrimp

The shrimp digs and cleans a burrow in the sand

in which both the shrimp and goby fish live. The
shrimp is almost blind leaving it vulnerable to
predators when outside its burrow. In case of
danger the goby fish touches the shrimp with its
tail to warn it.

Goby Fish : Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Shrimp: Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Which type of symbiosis is this?

Scenario #2
Tapeworm and Dog

The tapeworm grows in the dogs intestine

and feeds on digested food the dog has eaten
robbing the dog of nutrients.

Tapeworm: Positive/Negative/Unaffected
Dog: Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Which type of symbiosis is this?

Scenario #3
Humans and Chickens

The chickens lay eggs, humans eat the eggs,

chicken are unaffected.

Humans: Positive/Negative/Unaffected
Chicken: Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Which type of symbiosis is this?

Scenario #4
Sucker Fish and Shark

The sucker fish attaches (or sucks) to the

sharks belly and feeds off of scraps that the
shark eats. The shark is not harmed.

Sucker Fish: Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Shark: Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Which type of symbiosis is this?

Scenario #5
CLOWNFISH and SEA ANENOME

The clownfish lures predators into the

sea anenome, providing a food source for
the anenome. The anenome provides the
clownfish with shelter and protection
from predators.

Clownfish: Positive/Negative/Unaffected
Sea Anenome:
Positive/Negative/Unaffected

Which type of symbiosis is this?

Predator-Prey
One animal is the
hunter, the other is
the hunted. It's
what we have been
looking at in the
trophic pyramid.
Camouflage
Defense mechanism
used by prey to avoid
predators.

Predators can also use

camouflage to
stealthily sneak up on
prey.
