BEST HUMOR BOOK OF 2014 Check out the WEEKLY RECOMMENDATION THREAD Join in the WEEKLY "WHAT ARE YOU READING?" THREAD!
For the past year, I've had access to a RELATED SUBS AMA INFO
wonderful ebook subscription service
called "scribd". It offered access to
several thousands of books from a
catalog, including many newly released Submitted on 16 Feb 2016
books and unlimited audio books. Since I
signed up, they have gotten rid of the 6
unlimited audio book feature, and most pontos (63% upvoted)
recently, as of today, I received an email
https://redd.it/4645dd
that paying users will only be allowed to
access three books a month! This is
preposterous for members who are
paying $8.99 monthly.

I'm just in my first month of scribd and now it looks like Author of Perennial Seller
it'll be my last month as well. The only appeal of the
service to me is out of print or hand to find books, a lot Aug 30 - TBA N.K. Jemisin
of which are definitely not included in "Scribd Selects" Author of The Fifth Season
category, and 3 books a month are nothing!

Then I don't think there are any other comparable services! Bookmate doesn't offer as many
books, oyster is finito, kindle is limited, and I think that's all of them!
permalink embed pai
Looking at their previous changes and how rapidly they're introducing them, alienating huge
swaths of their audience... Scribd seems wildly mismanaged. I'm not sure which is worse: their
lack of business prowess and long-term planning or their piss-poor communication.
permalink embed
As a note, kindle unlimited only allows you to have up to six books checked out at a time. You
can check as many as you want out but only six can be actively on your account at once. Still
better than the service you are describing though.
Keep in mind, the kindle unlimited service doesn't have everything that Amazon sells. Only
books that are signed up to be available on the service. I have found some great authors I
wouldn't have read by using the service, however.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm considering just reverting to paper books and ordering them
used on amazon

isn't oyster shutting down with the founders moving on to work for Google?

from what i read all 'netflix for books' like services will be closing down because they
cannot make the business model work for them. :( which is sad because piracy is free
so you would think publishers would do all they can to keep readers paying $$.
permalink embed pai
It's not the publishers. It was the unsustainable business model that paid larger
royalties out than they got in as revenue, coupled with power users chewing
through content worth way more than $8.99/month.
If they switched to the Amazon model, they probably would have been sustainable.

Wow. I don't use these kinds of services, but I do use Netflix. That is, what, $8 a month? And I
can watch as many things as I want. Compare that with this service, the same price, limiting
you. Nuts to that. Glad you canceled.
permalink embed
Netflix is awesome! I have a membership myself, although you don't seem like much of a
reader. These services are for people that consume a lot of books.
permalink embed pai
I'm not sure I understand your comment. What gives you the impression that I'm "not
much of a reader"? Or that I don't know what these services are for? I mainly read
print, which is why I don't use them. Your whole comment is some serious wtf.
And anyway, I was agreeing with you that it's silly for scribd to limit people. My point
was that you're paying a similar price to Netflix, and Netflix doesn't limit what you can
watch. So, it's lame that, for the same price, on scribd, you're limited on what you can
read.
permalink embed pai
it's funny that the OP assumed you don't read based on the the fact that you use
Netflix.
permalink embed pai
Given the way writers get paid, unfortunately the Netflix model is unsustainable.
Scribd pay out royalties per book read. They fixed the payout at full price for the
book, as if the book was being paid for by the reader. With only $8.99 coming in,
you can probably see the problem. I mean, as a writer, it's a bonus, but I'd rather
the service stayed buoyant than went under.
Amazon manages to keep their service afloat but their payout (which is probably
sustainable) is declining month by month. This may be falling subs, this may be
more usage, but ultimately I think the problem with content streaming services is
that they either pay too much, with royalties divorced from actual income and get
damaged by power users, or the kitty being finite, the payout is too little divided by
too many.
permalink embed pai
Ah, thanks for clarifying. I know very little about the world of publishing. It
would be great to have something so similar to Netflix, in both function and
price. Things change all the time, so it may happen yet.
permalink embed pai
Possibly. But I suspect the way writers get paid (and unlike with Netflix we
don't have ad revenue allowing us to write the book, nor do we simply sell
rights to a content provider; unlike musicians we don't have a revenue
stream through live performances) means it's unlikely to become something
totally like Netflix (a service completely without limits) or take over from
conventional sales. The economics don't stack up, and that both Scribd and
Oyster ran into difficulties with power users tells you more concretely the
pitfalls of it.

Hey sorry man, I misread your comment, but thank you for clarifying! I personally
do enjoy paperbacks quite a lot, but I really enjoy having my entire library at the
palm of my hand so I can switch back and forth when I'm on a business trip or on
vacation.

$8.99 for three books, one audio book, unlimited comic books, and unlimited "non-premium"
books and audio books, and unlimited sheet music (If you're not a musician you may not
understand how incredible this is.)
It's still an unbelievable bargain compared to buying books individually. It always sucks when
prices go up, but such is the way of things.
permalink embed
this is the only reason I'm sticking for another month after the change. If I don't like what I
see, I'll probably cancel.
permalink embed pai
I actually don't use Scribd, or ereaders in general for "eyeball" reading. I use paper
books for that.
But it's cheaper than Audible for 1 audio book per month. I listen to Librivox books in
between, and I use it for comic books and sheet music.
For those reasons, it's a better value than Audible, for me.
edit: Audible raised their prices since last I knew!!!!

Just because I'm wealthy, doesn't mean I don't understand the value of money. Plus I read
books very quickly, and it would take me about a week to read three, therefore this doesn't
seem like a viable option for me.

This just makes it worse. You actually picked a user name to show off how rich you are?
