decides to use turf for fields at the
new high school, it has some informa-
tion to use.
While that decision still hasnt been
made, board members heard Monday
about the different options for turf
that affect the two key factors: cost
and safety.

director Mark Kryka explained the
different components of artificial turf
and several crucial lessons they have
learned from the experiences of others
using turf, including the University of
Wisconsin and districts like Middle-
ton-Cross Plains and Waunakee.

Night Out
The Verona Police Department held its annu-
al National Night Out Against Crime from
Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Festival Park behind Vero-
na City Center to connect the community and
discuss crime prevention. Hundreds of kids
have fun at the event featuring a landing from
the Med Flight helicopter, horse patrol and
police K9 demonstration.
All donations to the event will be used for
other community outreach programs, such as
child safety seat inspections and installations,
the police departments bicycle rodeo and the
vehicle winterization program for seniors.

Verona near $2.7 billion value for county board

The City of Verona is
worth twice as much as it
was before the Great Reces-
sion. And it added more
value to its total over the
past year than ever before,
nearly $300 million.
That bumped the citys
total value to $2.67 billion.
It was $1.35 billion in 2008.
A good chunk of the
increase is rising property
values all over Dane Coun-
ty, according to the states
Equalized Values Report,
released Friday, Aug. 4.
But its also continuing
its unusually high pre-re-
cession growth rate, at 8
percent net new construc-
tion which is the growth
rate when property value
increases are factored out.
Verona kept its title of
fastest-growing municipali-
ty in the county. The county
averaged 3 percent overall
new construction this year,
and Veronas $179 million
was more than 11 percent
of the countys $1.6 billion
added.
That will be good news
for city leaders when they
come around to budget sea-
son, because net new con-
struction is the number used
to determine how much

His tirades against the news
media have a trickle-down
effect. Not only has the epithet
fake news entered our com-
mon parlance; there have been
open attacks on journalists them-
selves. Perhaps the most egre-
gious of these occurred in May
in Montana when a candidate
for U.S. Congress physically
assaulted a reporter who asked a
question about health care.
These current attacks against
journalists are rooted at least in
part in a misunderstanding of the
role of journalism in our Ameri-
can system. The misunderstand-
ing stood out to me in June when
I heard Sarah Huckabee Sanders,
then Deputy Press Secretary,
use time at a White House daily
press briefing to scold reporters
over their selection of news sto-
ries. She chastised them for con-
centrating on the negative stories
they were finding rather than on
the positive press releases the
administration had been issuing.
Huckabee Sanders needs a
lesson in civics. So do the rest of
us. The lesson she and we need
is the reminder that reporters are
to function in our democracy as
the eyes and ears of the people
and not as the mouthpieces or
megaphones of the adminis-
tration. The First Amendment,
insofar as it safeguards the
freedom of the press, is in place
because a free and responsible
press is essential to our democ-
racy and not detrimental to it.
A Supreme Court opinion
by Justice Hugo L. Black gets
at the matter in a way worth
remembering. In 1971 the Court
heard arguments in a case called
The New York Times Co. v
United States, a freedom of the
press case stemming from the
controversial publication of the
so-called Pentagon Papers. The
Nixon Administration sued The
New York Times for publishing
materials that revealed govern-
mental secrecy and deception.
The case was decided 6-3 in
favor of the newspaper. Each
Justice in the majority wrote a
separate opinion. Justice Blacks
opinion carries these telling
lines: The press was protected
so that it could bare the secrets
of government and inform the
people. Only a free and unre-
strained press can expose decep-
tion in government.
Black understood what Huck-
abee Sanders does not: the pur-
pose of responsible journalism is
to serve the governed rather than
those who govern.
According to Bill Kovach and
Tom Rosenstiel, authors of The
Elements of Journalism, a 2001
text on the ethics of journalism,
journalists in part function in a
watchdog capacity. Reporters,
Kovach and Rosenstiel say,
watch over the powerful few in
society on behalf of the many to
guard against tyranny.
Reporters whether they
are in the White House press
briefing room, the Rose Garden,
on Capitol Hill, or here in the
chambers of our own City Hall
are the eyes and ears of the pub-
lic. They are there as our eyes
and ears because we cannot be
everywhere and because we need
to be responsibly informed. We
need to be responsibly informed
so we can faithfully live out and
maintain this government of the
people, by the people, for the
people.
The next time you hear the
members of the news media
being blasted as dishonest pur-
veyors of fake news, understand
their proper role and picture
them as men and women on the
front line of democracy and as
first responders in the cause of
the American ideal of responsive
and responsible government.
It is in our self-interest as
citizens to champion the report-
ers who ask the hard questions,
expose the uncomfortable truths,
and place the words and actions
of elected and appointed offi-
cials in context. They are not
the enemies of democracy but
defenders of it.

completion date in summer 2020

used artificial turf, while
most certainly wanting to
avoid injury, gave her some
peace of mind.
While artificial turf is
made from several different
parts, the most important in
terms of preventing inju-
ries is the pad of the turf,
making it worth spending
more money on, Richard-
son said.
Weve got to be able to
tell everybody, weve got the
best-in-the-business pad, and
thats what solves so many
issues with injuries and con-
cussions, Richardson said.
There are ways to test a
turf s pad for its rebound
levels to ensure it meets
recommendations and is the
safest possible surface for
athletics.
With the higher-level pads
come potential cost concerns,
but one upside to the pads is

Glacier Edge holds Camp Invention DOG BITES

Area kids learned about
energy, electricity, engi-
neering and other aspects of
invention including how
to market and sell inven-
tions at the annual Camp
Inve n t i o n , h o s t e d J u n e
12-16 by Glacier Edge Ele-
mentary School.
The camp drew 131 kids
almost three times as
many as last year from
as far away as Baraboo,
Wausau and New Glarus,
reported coordinator Amy
Burdette. The nonprofit
camp is part of a national
program designed by the
National Inventors Hall of
Fame and generally run
by area teachers with help
from older students.
