Prelim

In the first week of the Preliminary period in MARE 201A (Auxiliary

Machinery), it was a difficult part from us because we dont have any ideas about

important machineries such as Different Types of Pumps, Fresh Water Generator,

what are the functions, how does it work and etc., so our professor helps us to

understand briefly the Intended Learning Outcomes or ILO and also to know the

importance this course subject in our profession. To achieve the objectives of

MARE 201A, 1/Engr. Sherwin M. Reginio distributed the individual reporting that

will discuss in the whole preliminary period. The ILO or topic that are assigned to

me is about Fresh Water Generator, although it is too hard for myself to discuss

the Fresh Water Generator in order to achieve my ILO or main objectives of my

power point presentation. In the whole week of the discussion is all about Different

Types of Pumps such as Reciprocating Pump is a class of positive-displacement

pumps which includes the piston pump, plunger pump and diaphragm pump. It is

often used where a relatively small quantity of liquid is to be handled and where

delivery pressure is quite large; Piston Pump is a type of positive displacement

pump where the high-pressure seal reciprocates with the piston; Vane Pump is a

positive-displacement pump that consists of vanes mounted to a rotor that rotates

inside of a cavity. In some cases these vanes can have variable length and/or be

tensioned to maintain contact with the walls as the pump rotates; Axial Flow Pump,

or AFP, is a common type of pump that essentially consists of a propeller (an axial

impeller) in a pipe, and etc.; Impeller the rotating part of a centrifugal pump,
compressor, or other machine designed to move a fluid by rotation; Diffuser an

attachment or duct for broadening an airflow and reducing its speed

As the reporting goes on the reporters discussed about Discharge Pressure

is thepoint of highest pressure in a recirculating water system which is at the

discharge side of the re-circulating pump; Water ring air pump is a rotating postive-

displacement pump. They are typically used asa vacuum pump, but can also be

used as a gas compressor; Reciprocating Air Pump is a positive-dispacement

compressor that uses pistons driven by acrankshaft to deliver gases at high

pressure; Ejector is a pumping device. It has no moving parts. Instead, it uses a

fluid or gas as a motive force; Heeling System when the ship tilts on any of its sides

i.e. port or starboard and doesnt return back to its upright position, it is known as

heeling of the vessel. Heeling is unsafe for ship, its machineries and people

onboard. The main reasons of ships heeling are strong winds, hard and speedy

turns and uneven cargo loading. Out of the three reasons, the most common cause

is uneven cargo loading and unloading.

In the laboratory we familiarized the different types of pumps such as

reciprocating vane pump, centrifugal pump, screw pump, piston pump, gear pump

and etc., after we familiarized the important parts we detached it in order to see

the important internal parts of each pumps. In our first laboratory activity that was

graded we need to run the motor of specific pump that we picked and we need to

complete the task in a given time (3 minutes) and Im so lucky that I got 95/100

because it is hard to familiarized the parts and controllers in just a short time.
