Some Things You Should Know
CAUTION! When performing any checks with the engine running in an enclosed space
such as a garage, be sure there is proper ventilation. Never inhale exhaust
CAUTION gases; they contain carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, extremely
dangerous gas which can cause unconsciousness or death.
CAUTION!
Always set the parking brake securely and block the drive wheels before
CAUTION performing any checks or repairs on the vehicle.

UPDATING THE ESI[tronic] SOFTWARE
Your KTS 650 comes pre-loaded with ESI[tronic] software modules A, C9, and P1. The pre-loaded software
needs to be updated to the current version, please follow the update instructions below.
NOTE
To perform the following procedures, you may use the touchscreen and on-
screen keyboard or an optional, external USB mouse and keyboard.
NOTE
It is recommended that the KTS 650 be charged for a minimum of 4 hours
prior to updating the software.
To update the KTS 650 ESI[tronic] software, do the following:

1. Be sure the KTS 650 is turned OFF.
2. Connect the external DVD drive contained in your kit to the KTS 650 using the USB cable.
3. Use the Y-connector to connect the universal power pack to both the DVD drive and the KTS 650.

4. Turn the KTS 650 power ON.

The Bosch Applications Setup menu appears:
1. A = Vehicle Equipment
C9 = KTS Diagnostics and SIS Service Information
P = Wiring Diagrams

5. In upper right corner, confirm language is set to English (or to whatever language your Windows
operating system is set). Use the up and down arrow keys to make your selection.

6. Press F12 to begin the installation.

7. Read the installation agreement and click Accept.

The Setup completed message appears.

9. Click OK to restart the computer.

10. Insert the ESI[tronic] DVD 200x/1 (e.g., 2005/1) into the DVD drive.
After the KTS 650 restarts you will see the Bosch Applications menu (Figure 6).

11. On the Bosch Applications menu, tap Software Installation two times.

12a.The KTS 650 is pre-loaded with ESI[tronic] modules A, C9, and P. If this is the configuration you
ordered, click the radio button Yes, update automatically. Then go to Step 15 on Page 5.
12b.If your purchase includes software modules other than A, C9, and P, go to the following Step 13.
13. Select the radio button No, perform user-defined update, and click Continue.
The Data download update screen appears:

14. To add a module, use your stylus or mouse to drag the module name from the left column into the right
column.
15. Press Continue.

16. Confirm that the proper components will be installed to the correct drive on your PC by clicking
Continue.
A progress bar appears while the software is being updated.

When the upgrade is completed, a caution message appears reminding you that a release code may be
required for your PC.

17. Click Close.
The Installation was successful screen appears, informing you that your computer must restart in order
for the changes to take place.

18. Select Yes, restart computer now.

19. Click Restart.
After the restart, you are returned to the Bosch Applications menu.

If you also received an Update DVD (200x/2 or 200x/3 or 200x/4), then

NOTE insert the Update DVD, double tap Software Installation and follow
Step 13 through Step 19 as done previously with the first DVD (200x/1).
If the only DVD you received is the first of the year (marked 200x/1) then
proceed to Obtaining a Release Code on page 8.

KTS 650
OBTAINING A RELEASE CODE

Before you can use the software on your KTS 650, you must obtain a release code to enable its use. Of the
three ways to do thisinternet, email, and faxusing the internet is the fastest. All three methods are
described in this section.
Internet
To obtain a release code via the internet, do the following:
NOTE
You can use this method from any laptop or PC connected to the internet.
You do not have to have a KTS 650 with an internet connection.
1. Access the internet and go to https://www.bosch-esitronic.com.
CAUTION! You must include the s in https: in the web address. The s signifies that this
is a secure site. Without the s you will not be able to connect to the Bosch
CAUTION
web site.
2. At the top of the Welcome screen click on Language and select English from the drop-down menu.

3. Click on Register in the left column.

4. On the registration screen enter the ESI[tronic] Customer number and password found on your packing
slip.
NOTE If you do not have your packing slip and do not know your customer
number and/or password, contact Vetronix Customer Support at
(800) 321-4889 x4 for assistance.

5. Enter the email address where you wish to receive the release code.
6. Click register in the lower right corner.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to generate a release code.
8. Enter your ID No. which you must get from the computer screen of the KTS 650.
NOTE To obtain the ID number on the KTS 650, open the ESI[tronic] software,
select Settings > Release > Execute, and the ID number appears on
the Release screen. (See Figure 19)

9. Click Generate release code.

The release code is generated and emailed to the address entered on the registration screen.
NOTE To access the release code immediately without having to check your E-
mail, click the back button, and the release code appears next to the ID No.
you entered in Step 8.
You may login and change the password to one of your own choosing.

KTS 650
Email
To obtain a release code via email, do the following:
Send an email to: esitronic@bosch-serviceline.com with the following information:

ESI[tronic] Customer Number from the packing slip
ID No. from ESI[tronic]
Shop name, address, phone

Contact Name
An email with a release code will be returned within 1 business day.
Fax
To obtain a release code via fax, do the following:

1. Prepare a fax with the following information: (See fax form at the end of this guide.)

Contact Name
2. Send the fax to the ESI[tronic] Serviceline by dialing 011-49-1805-81-23-10.
A release code will be faxed back within 1 business day.

EXECUTING THE RELEASE

1. After obtaining the release code, open ESI[tronic] by double tapping it from the applications menu and
select Settings > Release > Execute.

2. Enter the release code in the space provided and click OK.

Your ESI[tronic] software is now released and ready to use.

INTRODUCTION
STEP 1: INSTALLING THE BOSCH APPLICATIONS ON THE PC

To install the Bosch applications, do the following:
1. Close all Windows programs, turn off the screen-saver, and disable any anti-virus software.
CAUTION!
Dont forget to enable your anti-virus software after installation and
CAUTION release are complete.
2. Insert the ESI[tronic] DVD 200x/1 (e.g., 2005/1) into the DVD drive of your PC.
3. Double click My Computer on the Desktop.
4. Locate and double click the DVD Drive in the Folders list (typically D).
5. Double click the folder baa.

The Bosch Applications Setup screen appears.
7. In upper right corner, confirm language is set to English (or to whatever language your Windows

8. Press F12 on your keyboard to begin the installation.

9. Read the installation agreement and click Accept.

STEP 2: INSTALLING THE ESI[TRONIC] SOFTWARE

To install the ESI[tronic] software, do the following:
1. After the system restarts, attach the KTS 550 to the PC and to power.
2. Double click Software installation in the Bosch Applications menu.

The BOSCH ESI[tronic] Welcome screen appears.

3. In the Welcome window, confirm that the language setting is correct and click Continue.

The Kind/type of installation window appears.

4. Select Local installation (standalone) radio button.
5. Select by highlighting User Defined as the Installation type.

6. Click Continue.
The Directories window appears.
7. Specify the directories in which the program files and data will be stored. See Figure 29 for
recommended settings.
NOTE
The software will automatically default to the recommended settings as
shown below.

8. Click Continue.
The ESI[tronic] program components window appears.
9. Confirm the appropriate settings are checked, as in Figure 30.

10. Click Continue.

The Swap out data screen appears.
11. To add a module, use your stylus or mouse to drag the module name from the left column into the right
column (see Figure 32). Only those modules subscribed to will function.

The more than 3000 MB of data in the Archive DVD can be loaded onto
NOTE your hard drive (provided there is space) or accessed directly from the
DVD when needed.
If you do not wish to load the Archive DVD to your hard drive, click on
the item marked Archive in the right-hand column and drag it to the left-
hand column.

12. Click Continue.

The Start copying screen appears.
13. Confirm that the proper components will be installed to the correct drive on your PC.
14. Click Continue.

KTS 550
ESI[tronic] now begins loading onto your PC. Depending on the speed of your computer and how much
data you are loading, the copying time varies.
The Firmware Update window appears.
NOTE If you did not attach the KTS 550 to your PC as instructed previously, an
error message pops up, stating Error in Firmware Update for KTS 520/
550/650 at COM1/USB. Click Cancel and the software installation
continues.

15. After the software is completely loaded, perform the Firmware Update by clicking on the Windows Start
button.
16. Choose Settings> Control Panel> RBsystem.

17. Select the Firmware tab.
18. Choose Start Update to start updating the KTS 550 firmware.
19a.If you are not loading the Archive DVD onto your hard drive (see note on page 19), proceed to Step 20.
19b.If you are loading the Archive DVD, remove the ESI[tronic] DVD from your drive and replace it with
the C Archive DVD at the prompt.

19c.Click OK.

20. Click Close.

The Installation was successful window appears.
21. Make sure that the Yes, restart computer now radio button is selected and click Restart.

UPDATING THE SOFTWARE
NOTE If your KTS 550 came with an update DVD (it would be marked U 200x/2,
200x/3, or 200x/4), it must be loaded before proceeding. If your KTS 550
did not come with an update DVD, go to Obtaining a Release Code on
page 24.
To update the software, do the following:

1. Ensure that the KTS 550 is connected with your PC and powered up.
2. Insert the update DVD (e.g., U 2005/2) into your DVD drive.
3. Click Start > Run.
4. Enter the path for the setup program in the format X:\Setup, where X is replaced by the letter of your
DVD drive (e.g., D:\Setup).
5. Click OK.
The Update - installation type screen appears.
6. Confirm that the Yes, update Automatically radio button is selected.

7. Click Continue.
The Start copying screen appears.
8. Confirm the settings.

9. Click Continue.
The Firmware Update window appears.
If you did not attach the KTS 550 to your PC as instructed previously, an
error message pops up:
NOTE
Click Cancel and the software installation continues.
10. After the software is completely loaded, perform the Firmware Update by clicking on the Windows
Start button.
11. Choose Settings > Control Panel > RBsystem.

12. Select the Firmware tab.
13. Choose Start Update to start updating the KTS 550 firmware.
The software update is loaded and the computer restarts when complete.
NOTE
If you have not yet performed the software release, please proceed to
Obtaining a Release Code.

OBTAINING A RELEASE CODE

Before you can use the software on your KTS 550, you must obtain a release code to enable its use. Of the
three ways to do thisinternet, email, and faxusing the internet is the fastest. All three methods are
described in this section.
Internet
To obtain a release code via the internet, do the following:

NOTE To obtain the ID number for the KTS 550, open the ESI[tronic] software
on the PC or laptop, select Settings > Release > Execute, and the ID
number appears on the Release screen. (See Figure 19)

9. Click Generate release code.

1. After obtaining the release code, open ESI[tronic] by double tapping it from the applications menu and
select Settings > Release > Execute.

Your ESI[tronic] software is now released and ready to use.
NOTE To "Lock" in your release code and prevent it from being lost due to
hardware configuration changes (including wireless cards, LAN,
networks, etc.) please proceed to "Locking in a Release Code" on the next
page.

LOCKING IN A RELEASE CODE

If you have a network or high speed internet, or if your laptop has a wireless LAN card, the following steps
are necessary so that your ESI[tronic] release code is recognized on-network and off-network.
1. Insert the DVD 200X/1 (e.g., 2005/1) into the DVD drive.
2. Double click My Computer on the Desktop.
3. Locate and double click the DVD drive in the Folders list (typically D).
NOTE
Since locking in a release code is a quick process, it is recommended all
users perform these steps.
4. Double click the Docs folder.

7. In the Registry Editor window, click Yes to add the information to the registry.

9. Remove the DVD and restart your PC.
