CM-231 Instrumentation and Score Preparation

Final Project

Make a transcription of one of the pieces from Tchaikovskys Album for the Young, Op. 39, for
an ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, horn in F, trumpet in B-flat, trombone,
two violins, viola, cello, and bass.

You may choose a different piece with the instructors permission.

A full score and one set of parts is required. All must be properly formatted and bound.

Project schedule:

Wednesday, 19 April: Project assigned

Monday 24 April: Complete sketch indicating melodic assignments and general orchestration. At
least eight bars of complete orchestration.
Monday 1 May: Complete score, and one extracted part.
Monday 8 May: Reading session. Be prepared to conduct your own transcription.

Grading Criteria

20% Accuracy of transcription

20% Idiomatic and effective writing for individual instruments
20% Effective use of ensemble
20% Score formatting
20% Parts formatting

Late submission of preliminary stages will be penalized two points per day late.
Late submissions of the final score and parts will not be accepted.
