What you should bring every day: In order for class to go smoothly, we all need to be
prepared to do our jobs. Just as I need to come to class ready to teach, you must come ready
to learn. Having these few essential items in class every day should help to ease the process
along!

A writing utensil
For pens, please use blue or black ink only
Material we are currently working with
We will be covering a variety of pieces over the course of the year. Some of these
could be short stories in our textbook, poems on worksheets and, of course, novels.
It is important that you have your texts with you in order participate in class
activities and get the most out of the readings!
Yellow notebook
This will be your notebook to write down definitions and processes we learn in
class. Your vocabulary and notes from lessons and presentations will be logged here.
Yellow Folder
Throughout the course of the year we will analyze and reference many texts that are
not provided within the standard textbook. It is important to file these away in
order to be able to reference them at a later point in time. By using these
supplementary materials we have a fuller, more rounded reading experience
SSR Book
Occasionally in class we will have some free time (ex. after an exam, before a new
unit). It is expected that you bring a book to read for pleasure.
Attitude: It is expected that everyone will bring a positive attitude to class every
day. I ask that our classroom be a place free from fear of judgment and ridicule. The
key to success will be respect; respect for me, yourself, each other, the physical
classroom, and the material we are studying.

(quizzes/exams/projects).
o Exams/ Projects: 40%
o Quizzes: 35%
o Classwork: 15%
o Homework: 10%

Make up/ Extra Credit/ Retests:

You will be responsible for missed assignments due to absences. Missed
assignments due to absences must be turned in or made up within 5 days of the
absence.
Since your goal is mastery of skills, I encourage and allow retests/ rewrites
o On tests and non comprehension quizzes: Students must receive below a
75 in order to qualify for a retest
o For essays: Student must receive below a 90 in order to qualify for a rewrite
Extra Credit will be given in the form of completing/ fixing incorrect or
missing work ONLY.

Attendance Policy: We will often be discussing pieces of literature in small groups and as
a class. In order to get the most out of this experience, students should do their best to be
present in class every day. However, unforeseen circumstances do occur. In the event that
you are absent it is expected that the following steps be taken in order to catch up:
Meet with me at the beginning or end of class OR email me to set up a quick meeting
Pass in any work due on the day of your absence
Receive any handouts/extra materials you may need
Schedule a make-up session for any missed tests/ quizzes

Rules and Routines:

Come to class prepared and on time.
Students will enter the classroom in an orderly fashion, immediately take their
seats, and begin the daily warm up activity
Have your homework out and on your desk at the bell.
Use of the bathroom should be at the beginning of class or during transitions unless
its an emergency.
Cell phones are not allowed in class unless otherwise needed for a lesson.
