Anatomija otoka-symposium

Micro-Public

Dinka Paveli, Master of Excellence BiA

Lecture will explain the process and consequences of renovation of an old olive mill (locals call it
communal magazine/warehouse), which is registered cultural heritage monument. The mill is
situated on the small distant island Premuda, on the northern Adriatic, with 53 permanent
inhabitants. With the renovation of Malin, the use of the building will be changed from the olive
mill into the place of socialization of the locals, and it will be given disposition to various local NGOs.
The renovation was initiated in 2012, and it is still going on, depending on the financial flow
dynamics, by Ministry of culture, City of Zadar, Ministry of regional development, and others.

Renovation was initiated by several volunteers, visitors and temporary inhabitants of the island, and
members of the Premuda NGO. The question is: what is the character of the public and communal
use in such micro-environments on small distant islands? Except for this Communal magazine, there
is potential in renovating the ex army barracks observatory into the future public use. The
observatory was one of the prominent points confronting Italy in ex Yugoslav army doctrine. As much
as most of the such army installations on Croatian archipelago, it is still waiting the right
project/investor, and until then it is left to the dilapidation.

In the presentation It will be also shown some of the lessons learned form the workshops on islands
of Vis and Hvar that the lecturer has previously mentored: the first treating the ex army barracks
Rogai and the latter addressing the issue of seasonal traffic congestion in the town of Jelsa, and its
consequences on the public places.
