5. Domestic Leased Lines Service
What is a leased line?

It is a symmetric telecommunications line connecting two locations.

It is a dedicated line (not shared) for a customer.
It is a non switched line, i.e., it is a non-exchange line.
It passes through transmission systems only.
Leased lines can be used for telephone (voice), data or Internet services.
However, dedicated voice circuits which were popular earlier are not in
vogue now. Now a days, leased lines are mainly used for data services.
Internet leased lines (ILL) is a separate service in itself.

Services on offer

1. Speech Circuits (Hot lines or Private Wire): Between two locations in one
city/ different cities for the same applicant. The terminating equipment at
both ends is telephone without dialing facility.

2. Data Circuits: To transmit data between computers or any other type of

electronic information devices.

Local (within city) and long distance (intercity) data circuits at low,
medium and high speeds, i.e., from 64 Kbps to nx64 Kbps to 2 Mbps to
STM-1 (155 Mbps) and beyond.
Dedicated path between two points
Private Data Network – More than one local or long distance leased
circuits converging on a location such that data from one leased circuit can
be transferred automatically to another leased circuit for the same
subscriber.
Mainly used by banks, other financial institutions, corporate, government,
etc to build their own private data network interconnection various offices
and their computer systems.

Features

Full dedicated bandwidth available for exclusive use of the subscriber

Complete privacy/ secrecy of data
From low to high, full range of bandwidth available – 64 Kbps, n x 64
Kbps, 2, 4, 8, 34, 45, 140, 155 (STM-1) Mbps, STM-4/16, etc
Bandwidth available on-demand in most cities – no registration charges
For low speed circuit, modem (Network Termination Equipment, NTE) is
to be arranged by the customer

6. Internet Leased Line (ILL)

• ILL is an always on Internet connection based on leased line access (i.e.

dedicated access). Leased lines provide the last mile access from the user
premises to BSNL equipment.

• Required by heavy users like educational institutes, big cyber café, small
and medium corporate house who need to constantly remain online with
Internet.

• Permanent Internet connection as compared to the temporary

connectivity through dialup access.

• Far superior quality as compared to dialup, thanks to digital signaling, less

noise, fewer exchanges etc.

• A scalable access method - Bandwidths starting from 64 Kbps to 2 Mbps to

8 Mbps, 10/100Mbps Ethernet connectivity, 34/45/155 Mbps and beyond
can be deployed.

• Since the access is "always on", it is possible to associate a pool of

permanent IP addresses with a particular leased line. Using IP addresses
provided by BSNL, it becomes possible to deploy a variety of services such
as mail, FTP, WWW, DNS, and proxy, to name the most common
requirements of organizations. In other words, leased lines enable hosting
of services of all types, and provide a platform for enterprise intranets and
extranets, apart from what we may term as "entry level" services such as
messaging, which still account for over 70 percent of all Internet access.

• Leased Internet bandwidths up to 2Mbps are provided using modems on

copper pair, however, large bandwidths are provided using OFC in the last
mile.

National Internet Backbone (NIB – II)

BSNL is the largest ISP (Internet Service Provider) of India

Leased Internet service of BSNL is given from the NIB – II network of

BSNL Managed SaaS (Software as a Service)
BSNL Software as a Service (SaaS) is a model of software deployment wherein
an application is licensed to you for use as a service on demand. On-demand
licensing and use would alleviate your burden of equipping a device with every
conceivable application. On-demand licensing enables software to become a
variable expense, rather than a fixed cost at the time of purchase. Managed
Business Mail is first product in the series.

BSNL Managed Business Mail

BSNL Managed Business Mail is the email solution designed to help
companies:

• Access information, even when out of the office

• Get more out of an email system so that employees can get more done
• Gain the peace of mind that comes from a professionally managed service

With Microsoft Exchange as the mail server and Microsoft Outlook as your client,
your employees can do more than send and receive email – they can share
calendars, folders and contacts. Outlook is available for desktop, browser, and
mobile access so you’re always connected, whether you’re in the office,
traveling, or working at home. And since you always connect to the same
Exchange server, your inbox stays synchronized, no matter which Outlook client
you’re using.

When you choose BSNL Managed Business Mail, you can rest assured,
knowing your email system is always secure, always backed-up and always
available with our:

• State-of-the-art security and privacy

• High reliability and performance
• Outstanding administration and support

Implementing and managing Microsoft Exchange in-house has been cost-

prohibitive and out-of-reach for most businesses. Hosted Exchange is suitable for
even the smallest companies with only a few employees. You gain all the power
with none of the pain when you choose BSNL Managed Business Mail .

Features
1. The Power of Exchange and Outlook
The combination of Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook includes rich
functionality for sorting, prioritizing, delegating and managing e-mail that allows
you to take control of your inbox. The service helps your employees get more
done by providing:

• Group calendars that streamline scheduling by exposing free or busy

times for your employees as well as your shared resources like meeting
rooms
• Address books for maintaining and sharing company-wide contact
information
• Public folders for organizing and sharing files
• Task lists for basic project management and coordinating activities

Microsoft Outlook is available as a Windows desktop client, as well as Outlook

Web Access (OWA) for access from any computer with a web browser and
Internet connection, and Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) for web-browser enabled
mobile devices. OWA and OMA allow people who are at home or on the road to
have access to the same information as on-location employees. The user
interfaces have been designed to look and feel as similar as possible, making it
easy to switch from one to the other with no added learning curve. And
everything stays synchronized, whether you are managing your inbox from your
computer, your mobile device or any web browser.

comes with the service. With Managed Business Mail, a business-class e-mail

your core e-mail and messaging security concerns on two fronts:
1. Microsoft Exchange Server was designed with security built-in – features include
secure defaults, improved ability to restrict connections and messages, automatic
logging off from Outlook Web Access, support for Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions (S/MIME), attachment blocking, Block Sender lists and a new Virus
Scanning API for improved antivirus protection.
2. BSNL has architected a hosting infrastructure with security as the primary design
consideration across all components, from logical to physical to people and
processes. Key features include:
• User authentication and multiple levels of password authorization to
ensure that only authorized users can gain access
• Daily backups stored securely offsite for data recovery
• Encryption of data during network transit and storage, using standard
protocols like SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).

continuously in the loop while you’re on the go. Frequent travelers can read,
compose and act upon messages and attachments no matter where they are –
from client site to airport to coffee shop – while maintaining a mailbox that is
always synchronized.

Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile uses Exchange Server ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access
(OMA) to put the power of Windows software into Pocket PC or Smartphone
devices. ActiveSync is a protocol that allows applications to talk directly to the
Exchange Server in order to synchronize e-mail, calendar, and contacts. OMA
provides client access from web-browser enabled mobile devices. Together they
help you manage all of your information and communications while on the go.

5. Get More Done

Most companies share information by sending email messages back and forth.
This works reasonably well if your company has two people – beyond that it can
quickly fall apart and lead to confusion and frustration!

Effective teamwork requires a shared, centralized place to store information, with

common, authenticated access for authorized users. With this foundation, your
employees can do what’s expected of them, even when they’re traveling or
dispersed across multiple locations:

Locate addresses and other contact information among shared lists that
everyone can view and edit. Arrange meetings by viewing free and busy
schedules of participants, finding a time that works for all, sending invitations,
and tracking responses – with details entered automatically into participant
calendars for them.

Manage projects across a workgroup with the ability to view timelines and
assignments while tracking items that are active, completed and overdue.
Grant access to administrators and support staff in order to delegate tasks.

When you discover that sharing information by email no longer works for your
company, we invite you to discover Managed Business Mail and other services
from BSNL.

6. Peace of Mind

Email has become a high demand application used companywide, requiring high
around-the-clock availability. To stay competitive in today’s business
environment, you need sophisticated messaging tools with features like mobile
access and shared calendars. Yet these tools come with complex needs for
implementation, management and support.

Now you can enjoy the benefits of business class email in a ‘pay as you go’
model that allows you to scale up or down as needed, with no risk. Managed
Business Mail from BSNL frees valuable capital, IT staff and other costly
resources for more effective, strategic use within your company.

With Managed Business Mail, no specialized technology skills are required.

Administrative tasks, like adding new mailboxes, are simplified so even non-
technical staff can handle them.

Quality of service backed by guaranteed service levels will bring you peace of
mind. And you get a messaging solution that is much more rich, reliable and
robust than basic Web mail.

When you are ready to offload the administration of your messaging system,
without giving up features or control, discover Managed Business Mail from
BSNL.

7. Mobile Persona
Are you maximizing the tools available that can make you a more
productive mobile executive?

Managed Business Mail offers mobile communication benefits far beyond

sending and receiving e-mail at remote locations. Frequent travelers can read,
compose and act upon messages and attachments no matter where they are –
from client site to airport to coffee shop – while maintaining a single mailbox:
Stay in touch and synchronized no matter which Outlook client you use – the
regular desktop version on your own PC, Outlook Web Access (OWA) from any
computer with a web browser and Internet connection, or Outlook Mobile Access
(OMA) from your web-browser enabled mobile device.
Grant other people, such as administrative assistants, access to your mailbox on
your behalf when you have to be away from the office.
Set up ‘rules’ for processing messages, like auto-responses and automatic filing,
to help you prioritize and manage limited e-mail time while traveling.

And like every other aspect of your hosted service, all the technical functions are
administered for you. So if your laptop is lost or stolen during travel, you can
count on a back-up of your inbox, ready to be restored for you by your hosting
provider.

8. IT / Technical
As the person chartered with making e-mail – arguably the most critical,
widely-used application in any company – work continuously while meeting
user demands and keeping costs contained, you face a real dilemma. How
do you offer the tools needed to keep pace and do it with little or no staff,
budget, or time?

Consider Managed Business Mail. You can have a flexible, enterprise-class

solution to address your worker productivity and information sharing
requirements. Your end users gain all the features and functionality of Exchange,
while your technical specifications are met:

• Rapid deployment
• Timely server upgrades and security patches
