VPDs first police dog finishes training, starts patrolling

patrol around Verona.
Last week was the first patrol for
the German Shepard, part of the first
K-9 unit in the Verona Police Depart-
ment. She and handler completed a
six-week training in Pennsylvania on
Aug. 4.
Dreas primary duties include
detecting drugs such as meth, mar-
ijuana, heroin and cocaine, as well
as tracking suspects of crimes and
missing people. Compared to 5 mil-
lion scent receptors humans have, the
250 million receptors dogs have make
them more capable of recognizing and
locating scents.
Kile said especially at night, when
its hard for officers to rely on their
own senses, the dogs can guide them
to track things by using their noses.
Lt. Mark Horstmann, who devel-
oped the VPD K-9 program, said the
goal is to get drugs off the street and
keep people safe.
A $19,500 grant from Epic covered
the initial training, purchase of the
dog and squad equipment, making it
possible for the department to have its
own dog.
While the outside of Dreas car
looks similar to regular squad cars,
the inside is entirely customized for
her. The air conditioner maintains the
temperature at a certain level to make
her stay cool, with a metal cage for
Drea to ride in, taking up the back
seat and the trunk for equipment.
Unlike other nearby cities that run
their K-9 programs from fundraisers
and taxes, Horstmann said Verona
runs it at no cost to the public, as all
Dreas living expenses (food and vet-
erinary services) are donated by local
businesses Madisons Pet World and
Veronas True Veterinary Care.
In the past, the department has to
borrow police dogs from other depart-
ments when tracking drugs and sus-
pects, but they had to wait for the
dogs to get to Verona, and sometimes
they were unavailable.
For now, Drea works with Kile on
a rotating basis eight hours per day
for six night shifts, and three days off.
Although the department might still
need to borrow dogs from other agen-
cies occasionally, Drea provides more
flexibility.

the department to interact with the
community at events, K-9 presenta-
tions and demonstrations.

Kile recalled the first time he met
Drea, when she walked on her own
pace and didnt obey his orders.
Six weeks later, Drea had built the
bond with him and acted more like an
intimate friend, walking by his side at
the same pace and hugging him while
theyre taking a rest.
It was a very challenging training,
but its well-worth it, Kile said.
Before the two met, the two-year-old
dog had already been trained to detect
narcotics and track humans for six
weeks. The training she went through
with Kile allowed them to learn how
to work with each other, including
the dogs obedience, how the officer
should give commands and how to
read the dogs behavior changes.

Moving to the music

The Musical Pathways Foundation held Kindermusik, a music
and movement class at the library on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
Children ages 2-5, and their accompanying adult, were invited
to sing, dance and move with the music.
Kindermusik is a developmental program that promotes cogni-
tive, physical, language, social, emotional and musical develop-
ment in young children, according to its website.
The Musical Pathways Foundation is a nonprofit with several
locations around the state, including one in Verona.

Scullions garden wins beautification award

The garden of Jerry and
Madonna Scullion at 1027
Tamarack Way has been
selected for the Sugar River
Garden Clubs annual civic
beautification award.
This award aims to rec-
ognize residents who beau-
tify their property and help
make Verona a great place
to live. The Scullion garden
enhances the neighborhood
with a cheerful greeting,
whether walking or driving
past it.
Madonna made it very
clear that Jerry does the
majority of gardening on
their property. The garden
extends across the front
of their two duplexes. It is
very colorful due to a nice
blend of perennial and
annual flowers. The patio,
highlighted by a bright red
climbing rose and chairs, is
most inviting for entertain-
ing and relaxing.
The Scullions moved to
their home in 2001, so the
garden is well established.
Jerry said he grew up in
Dodgeville, but he did not
know much about garden-
ing until he worked profes-
sionally, managing super-
market produce. This led to

Alan Kopp pitched out of a bas-

Cavaliers scored three times with
two outs in the bottom half of the
inning as Verona defeated Fort
Atkinson 5-3.
I have to trust my team, Kopp
said. They are back there behind
me. I just had to throw strikes and
keep the ball in play and get outs.
The Cavaliers were upset in the
Sunday League Western Section
playoffs, but that loss has turned
into a motivation to fight for the
Night League title.
They came up big in the bottom
of the fifth despite Fort Atkinson
pitcher Andrew Holzli starting the
inning by striking out Mitch Flora
and Derek Murphy.
Alex Olson was hit by a pitch,
and Klayton Brandt walked. Jacob
Slonim then hit a high pop out
to the pitcher that was lost in the
lights and fell in for an RBI dou-
ble.
Brandt later scored on a passed
ball, and Justin Scanlon walked.
Scanlon then attempted to steal
second and the ball was thrown
into center field, allowing Slonim
to score to make it 5-3.
In the top of the inning, starting
pitcher Brad Laufenberg walked
Bryan Wallace with one out and
Kopp was called in to finish the
inning.
Although Kopp wasnt hit hard,
he allowed two singles to load the
bases. Kopp sawed off Tim Brokl,
who was able to use his strength
to knock the pitch through the
hole between first and second, and
then Tyler Sexton had a swinging
bunt die on the third-base line and
remain fair for an infield single.
Instead of panicking, Kopp
struck out the next batter and got
a fielders choice grounder to end
the inning unscathed.

Verona Area High School has a
solid girls tennis team returning this
season, but unfortunately, so do all of
the top teams in the Big Eight Con-
ference.
The Wildcats return their top
four singles players, led by special
state qualifier Meredith Conley and
the No. 1 doubles team of Meghan
Anderson and Eve Parker.
The Wildcats were 5-4 in confer-
ence duals last year and finished fifth
at the conference tournament.
Hopefully, we can finish in the
top five again, head coach Mark
Happel said. Our girls will have
had to put in a lot of off-season court
time to improve.

Obituary Millholland: Fellowship allows freedom in academic research

Alan R. Freitag, age 85,
of Verona, passed away
Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017
at his home.
He was born on Aug.
10, 1932
at home
in New
Glarus, the
son of Terrance and Frie-
da (Luchsinger) Freitag.
Al graduated from
Monticello High School
in 1950. Following high
school he entered into the
United States Navy and
served for three years.
On April 10, 1954 he
was united in marriage to
Jean Schuett at the E & R
Church in New Glarus.
After his military ser-
vice Al worked at Badger
Ordnance, then Borden
Dairy, and selling insur-
ance. In the 1960s he
purchased Creative Wood-
crafts which he operated
for over 35 years. Al was a
past president of the Wis-
consin Builders Associa-
tion and was a member of
the Madison Area Build-
ers Association.

Sarah Millholland expects to keep searching for life out-
side the solar system for the next three years, but after that
she hopes to become a professor in astronomy and inspire
students to find their interest the way she did.
She knows it wont be easy.
Theres more people in grad school than there are pro-
fessor jobs, so its a competitive field for sure, she said.
And much of that competition is among men.
The female ratio is quite small, especially in theory,
Millholland said.
That can create stressful moments.
Sometimes, when someone asked me what I do, I
would tell them I do physics, they would be like, Oh real-
ly, thats surprising, Millholland recalled. Getting those
kinds of reactions is never pleasant.
But she has had supportive mentors throughout her
time in school, which was really helpful, and has seen
leaders in the field dedicate time to solving that gap, like

Sarah Millholland first became interested in math and
science at Verona Area High School.
While she did not know at the time it would lead to
looking for other planets with life at Yale University, her
senior year Advanced Placement calculus class with Jim
Guy was extremely inspiring, she said.
He was showing us that math is not just a bunch of
equations but its really a tool to understanding how the
physical world works, she said of Guy.
She advised other high school students to look at it in
the same way.
Dont get dragged down by math and science think-
ing of it as something you do for a class, but thinking
of it as the broader things you can do with that knowl-
edge, she said.
Her time running for the cross country and track
teams for three years at VAHS were also very forma-
tive, she said.

lost a valued teacher and a treasured
friend last weekend.
Lori Corey, 37, died Saturday night
from injuries she received in a car
accident Thursday evening, July 24.
Corey had been a fifth-grade teacher
in the district since 1983, most recent-
ly at Savanna Oaks.
Corey had the professional respect
of her colleagues.

The City of Verona, 410 Investment
Court, Verona, WI 53593 has applied to
the Department of Natural Resources for
a permit to remove materials from the
bed of a tributary to Badger Mill Creek.
The project is located in the SE1/4 of the
SE1/4 of Section 15, Township 6 North,
Range 8 East, City of Verona, Dane Coun-
ty.
The proposed Lincoln Street Lower
Channel Maintenance and Rehabilitation
Phase II project will dredge approximate-
ly 4,200 cubic yards of sediment and
remove an obsolete drop structure from
the existing channel. The proposed sec-
tion of the channel to be dredged is south
of Verona City Hall on property within the
City of Verona owned by the City and
Dane County. The project purpose is
to maintain the existing flow line of the
channel, address channel incising by
grading more gradual side slopes and re-
move the non-functioning drop structure.
The Department will review the
proposal provided by the applicant and
any information from public comments
and a public informational hearing, if re-
ments on the proposal, they must be
