Chapter One How to check and repair the dryer

1. Steps to follow:

1) Normal check and repair steps:

a. To get familiar with the dryer to be checked and repaired

Before the check and repair work, the maintenance service staff must
have a basic knowledge on the dryer, carefully read its use instructions and study
its electric circuit diagram, as is shown below:
Figure 1 : Circuit Diagram

Besides, they should know the framework or structure of the product. The dryer
consists of components like the base, drum, door, control panel and cabinet, etc.

1 Motor
The motor here refers to the capacitor-run single-phase asynchronous motor. Its
main components are the stator and the rotor. Between the stator and the rotor
there is an air gap, which is normally in open type for the consideration of heat
emission and moisture ejectment.
The motor provides the majority power for the operation of the dryer, serving as
the power source. If it breaks, the drier would be out of function.

2Capacitor
The capacitor is made up of the shell, polar board, dielectric and connection
terminal, etc. Its main performance standards are capacitance, pressure tight,
medium consumption and stability. Too large a capacitance will lead to an
overwhelming motor temperature enhancement and thus quicken the aging of
the medium; On contrary, too small a capacitance will reduce the overloading
capability of the motor.

3 Sensitive Switch
The sensitive switch, also called safety switch, is used to stop the dryer from
functioning when its door opens at a certain distance.

4 Thermostat
This device is used to limit the temperature inside the drum by automatically
cutting off the circuit in case of any abnormities. Users or owners are not allowed
to reset it because of its structure.

5 Auto-restoration Thermostat
This kind of thermostat can restore the current when the relevant components of
the dryer fully cool off.

6 Manual Thermostat
The restoration of current requires manual work rather than automatic work.

7 Temperature Sensor
It is used to sense the internal temperature of the dryer drum.

8 Calefaction Pipe
It is used to heat the air of the drum when the dryer starts functioning.

9 Electronic Program Controller

This is the controlling parts of the dryer. It offers various choices for the users to
complete their work.

2) Cause Analysis
To figure out the cause to the failure, one can electrify the dryer to make it
function and check the failure condition. Meanwhile, further manual failure
confirmation work is needed.
3) Maintenance and Testing
Once the failure is confirmed, repair or service work is required to the dryer.
Replace those components that need change with new ones. However, the
replacement of the electronic program controller shall examine the relevant
electric devices as well to avoid a vicious circle. Because the electronic program
controller failures are normally caused by the mechanical faults of periphery
controlling electric devices.

2 Common Instruments or Devices for Dryer Maintenance

1) Ampere voltammeter

2) Some common instruments, like crosshead screwdriver, long nosed pliers

monkey wrench, test pencil, etc.
Chapter Two Non-failures Introduction

Failure Phenomenon No.1: Total failure of being unable to function

Possible Cause:
1) To check whether the power if cut off

2) To check whether the power plug is tight

3) To check whether the Power Button is on

4) To check whether the Start/Pause button has been pressed.

Failure Phenomenon No.2: No heating effect while running normally

Possible Cause:
To check whether the dryer is under the air-dry procedure or the procedure is
at the refrigeration stage or period.

Failure Phenomenon No.3: The operation panel is still experiencing

fever while the power switch is shut off after the procedure runs.
Possible Cause: In the course of running or even after an end of running, some
components have to emit heat.

Failure Phenomenon No.4: Sudden stop of running dryer procedure.

Possible Cause:
1) To check whether the power is off. If there is a power cut during the running
course, the input procedure will be mopped off and wont function again
despite of a possible regain of power. One has to input it again.
2) To check whether the door is open.

Failure Phenomenon No.5: To open and close the door during its

working leads to the nonfunctioning.

Possible Cause: This is a special safety design to avoid accidents. One has to push
the Start/Pause button to enable the dryer to work

Failure Phenomenon No.6: Failure of button operations

Possible Cause:
1) After the startup of the procedure, the Heating and Choice buttons can
work only in the course of drying. To change the set, please push the
Start/Pause button or cut off the power to reset.
2) To check whether the Locking light is on. If it is, press both of the
Heating and Choice buttons to unlock it.

Failure Phenomenon No.7: Air-dry doesnt work

Possible Cause:
Only when the Choice button is set at 1 Hour, Heating can choose the
Air-dry.
Chapter Three Common Failures Analysis

Example 1

Failure Phenomenon: The indicator light doesnt work when the

power is on

Analysis and Maintenance:

1) To check the power section for any power cut or plug loose;
2) To check the power connection section to find out whether it is fully installed
3) To check whether the wire of the electronic program controller is fully at
place. If it is, replace the electronic program controller to check whether the
failure disappears

Example 2

Failure Phenomenon: After the power is on, press the Start/Pause

button, only to find the drum doesnt rotate while the indicator light

is on.
1) If the motor is all right, the maintenance methods should be:
a. To check first of all whether there is any severe distortion or deformation
on the cabinet and the base board;
b. If there isnt, continue to check whether there is any damage to the belt
or whether the belt is fully installed. Replace the damaged belt or
improve the installation if necessary.
c. If the belt is in right position, check the tight pulley components. If this
pulley cant rotate or it meets too large a resistance, replace it or its axis.
If the deformation of its bracket leads to the nonfunctioning of all
components, replace the bracket. Similarly, if its for springs reason,
change the spring.
d. If all of the above mentioned phenomena are non-existent, check whether
there is a belt skid effect. If there is, change the belt.
2) If the motor doesnt work, the maintenance methods should be as follows:
a. To check whether there is any problem related to the electronic program
controller wire, whether there is any rupture to the wiring harness.
b. To check whether the capacitance matches the motor and the connection
is fully conducted.
c. Use a new capacitor to conduct a test. If it can work, the capacitor is to
blame; If the problem still exists, the motor should be the cause and need
to be replaced.
d. If both the capacitor and the motor are all right, try to replace the
electronic program controller to find out whether the failure disappears.

Example3

Failure Phenomenon: The clothes wont get hot despite of such a long

period of heated drying.

Analysis and Maintenance:

1) To check whether the manual restoration thermostat is out of place. If it is,

figure out the cause and eliminate the problem to restore the thermostat to its
right position.
2) If it isnt, turn to check whether the calefaction pipe connection is fully
installed.
3) To check if the connection-peg of the electronic program controller is tight
enough
4) To check whether the calefaction pipe resistance is within the proper range.
5) To check whether the resistance of temperature sensor is within the proper
range.
6) If all of the above-mentioned doesnt happen, please replace the electronic
program controller.

Example 4

Failure Phenomenon: When the dryer is powered on, the dryer starts

functioning without pressing the startup button.

Analysis and Maintenance:

The Start/Pause button cant work because of a possible electronic program
controller failure. Disassemble the controller board to find out the failure and
then replace it.

Example 5:

Failure Phenomenon: When the dryer is powered, the dryer starts

functioning immediately.

Analysis and Maintenance:

This is maybe related to a possible electronic program controller failure.
Disassemble the controller board to find out the failure and then replace it.

Example 6:

Failure Phenomenon: When the dryer is powered on, press the

Start/Pause button, only to find that the dryer refuses to function

and give an alarm.

Analysis and Maintenance:

This is maybe a door switch failure, which makes the electronic program
controller detect that the door is unclosed. Thus alarm system starts working.
Replace the sensitive switch.

Example 7:

Failure Phenomenon: During the functioning of the dryer, open the

door and the dryer continues to work.

Analysis and Maintenance:

This is maybe a door switch failure, which fools the electronic program
controller by indicating that the door has been closed. Replace the sensitive
switch.

Example 8:

Failure Phenomenon: limited air delivery at the air uptake during

the work period of the dryer.

Analysis and Maintenance:

1) To check whether the fresh air inlet is blocked. The air inlet should maintain
unblocked.
2) To check whether the lint filter is blocked. Take out the filter to clean it.

Example 9:

Failure Phenomenon: Too long a running period for so little clothes

to get dried.

Analysis and Maintenance:

This might be a temperature sensor failure. Work out the failure cause and
replace the thermostat sensor.

Example10:

Failure Phenomenon: The rotate speed of the dryer drum is too low

Analysis and Maintenance:

Possible Causes:

1) Loose belt, damaged or broken wedge, which in combination will lead to a

belt skid. Replace the pulley Spring
2) The extensibility of the spring continues to reduce and finally cause a belt
skid and the drum refuses to rotate at a fast speed. Change the spring.
3) Wrongly installed capacitor. This will make certain motor cease working.
4) Capacitor failure like aging inefficiency. Change the capacitor.

Example11:

Failure Phenomenon: Some electric shock from the cabinet while

using the dryer.

Analysis and Maintenance:

To check whether it is leaked electricity or faradism. It would be very dangerous
if it is electricity leakage, which might be caused by short circuit, insulation
failure affected with damp or insulation section cracking by friction. Unplug and
test the cabinet with electroprobe. If the electroprobe light up, it tells thats the
faradism. Continue to check whether the dryer is properly grounded. Work out
the cause and eliminate it.

Example12:

Failure Phenomenon: The dryer works now and then with intervals
Analysis and Maintenance:
To find out whether the motor wiring connection is correctly installed. If it is,
turn to check the electronic program controller.

Example13:

Failure Phenomenon: Buttons Failure

Analysis and Maintenance:

Possible Causes:
1) Dropping off or malposition of buttons
2) The key-press section has any damages
3) There is any failure related to the electronic program controller

Example14:

Failure Phenomenon: No air at the air uptake while the dryer drum

is working.

Analysis and Maintenance:

This might be due to the loose condition of the impeller nut. Try to fasten it!
