ic season so far! According
to this years campground
manager, Rick Chorneyko,
the campground has been
full for most weekends.
As you might expect,
during the week there are
more vacancies, but most
weekends have been very
successful. He noted that
even for the upcoming few
weekends, they are at full
capacity. It has been a re-

summer, and it has been
really great all around.

Another Busy Weekend
Minnedosas biggest summer weekend, Fun Fest
and Rockin the Fields are behind us for another year
but that doesnt mean that the weekend attractions are
over. In addition to the regular lake, beach and camp-
ground activities, this coming weekend will see some
additional festivities being hosted by various local non-
profit groups. On Sunday, August 20th, The Minnedosa
District Museum and Heritage Village will host its annual
Heritage Day celebration (see ad elsewhere in this edi-
tion). Sunday will also see the return of the Valley Fun
Colour Run which was advertised on the front page of
last weeks edition. The Colour Run is being sponsored by
the Beach Enhancement Committee, Minnedosa Rotary
and Minnedosa Lions. Also happening this weekend are
longboard races and re-opening of the Rivers Edge bike
park. This will be one of the last big event weekends of the
summer so get out and take in whats happening!
Smooth travelling
It doesnt matter where you drive lately you will
probably run into some road construction. Although the
reduced speed limits and waiting in line for a pilot truck
can be frustrating, in the end, it is worth it to have our
roadways resurfaced. In addition to the ongoing project
on Highway #10 between Rapid City and Minnedosa,
work is also underway on Highway #16 in the vicinity of
Basswood. New pavement has also been placed on 6th
Avenue N.W. out past the MREC and Ag grounds out to
the Industrial Park, 4th Street S.W. out to 9th Avenue and
the north entrance to Minnedosa on Highway #16A. We
also welcomed some new pavement patches along Main
Street this year.
Classes around the corner...
Summer holidays are quickly wrapping up for school
staff and students. New teachers in the Rolling River
School Division will undergo orientation August 29th
and 30th. Once September hits staff and administration
will be back to work preparing for the 2017-2018 school
year which will kick off with the first day of classes on Fri-
day, September 8th.

Is A Giant Pyramid Scheme

R ecently, federal Innovation Minister Navdeep
Bains announced $10 million in funding for
the Center for Aerospace Technology and Training
(CATT)located in Winnipeg. CATT describes itself as
a perfect example of a partnership between industry
and research/education.
While theres nothing objectionable about govern-
ments funding a public good like education, its nota-
ble that the industry partner in question here is aero-
space an industry that seems to perpetually receive a
disproportionate amount of politicians attention, not
to mention taxpayer money.
Superficially, this isnt surprising. Airplanes are
impressive to just about everyone, from small children
to politicians, and for obvious reasons. Theyre big ma-
chines that fly. Even the word aerospace conjures up
positive imagery of sophisticated technology and engi-
neers in lab coats. For anyone who laments industries
like cutting down trees or extracting oil out of the
ground as boring relics of a bygone era, aerospace ticks
all the exciting boxes that signal economy of the future.
Unfortunately for Canadians, that future never
quite seems to arrive. Bombardier, Canadas most
prominent aerospace company, is the national poster
child for corporate welfare, having received $4 billion
since 1966.
Last year, after receiving $1.3 billion in aid from
Quebec taxpayers, it proceeded to fire 2,000 Canadian
workers. Not long after, the Trudeau government came
along to give them a further $372 million in repayable
loans. It is no exaggeration to say the company has
essentially been kept on life support for decades by
Canadian taxpayers. And if Bombardier sold brooms
instead of airplanes, the market would have put it out
of its misery decades ago.
Naturally, aerospace boosters are quick to insist
theres more to the story. Often this takes the form of
what are usually referred to as economic spinoff ef-
fects. The pitch goes something like this: Bombardier

builds planes. Those planes need parts. So Bombar-
diers demand for parts sustains a whole bunch of sup-
pliers as well.
This logic sounds great on paper but theres just
one small problem: it isnt true. Far from Bombardier
sustaining its own supply chain, Canadian taxpayers
are forced to subsidize companies in the aerospace
supply chain as well, through regional development
funds, provincial funds, and the recently launched
Strategic Innovation Fund.
In fact, the aerospace industry in Canada resem-
bles a giant pyramid scheme, with taxpayers at the bot-
tom of the pyramid. Based on the aerospace is special
argument (often backed up with the sage every other
country does it argument), Canadian taxpayers have
the privilege of subsidizing an entire industry top to
bottom. Theres the aforementioned subsidies to Bom-
bardier; subsidies for Bombardier-led consortiumsto
do research and development; subsidies to the buyers
of Bombardiers planes (in the form of cut rate loans
through Export Development Canada) which are in
many cases already priced below cost; and subsidies
to Bombardiers suppliers.
If this sounds like a crazy business strategy, its
because it is. And if we were to replace the word air-
planes with candy canes, no sane person would
take the pseudo-economics of aerospace seriously.
But because it is about airplanes, and airplanes are
sophisticated machines, politicians, industry execu-
tives, union leaders and more than a few otherwise
intelligent people buy into the whole absurd charade.
And why not? Its not their money at stake. Its merely
the broader taxpaying public, and those working in in-
dustries to which the normal laws of economics apply,
who end up paying the price.
Its far past time we accept the obvious: aerospace
isnt special, and its perpetual coddling by politicians
soaks Canadian taxpayers and hurts Canadian busi-
nesses in other industries. If the aerospace industry
cannot survive in this country without Canadian tax-
payers propping it up forever in countless ways, its
time to let it go.

Safe Effective Changes For EMS

The 2013 Manitoba
EMS System Review was
authored by Reg Toews, a
respected leader in Mani-
toba health-care planning
and delivery, following ex-
tensive consultation with
frontline paramedics, land
and air ambulance service
operators, regional health
authorities, municipal
and community leaders,
and many others. The re-
port concluded that Mani-
tobas EMS system was
fragmented with mini-
mal coordination across
the province and should
be reconfigured to en-
sure resources met future
service demands in a re-
sponsive and sustainable
manner. That report was
released publicly in April
of 2013, recommending
the realignment of EMS
resources, and was widely
accepted and supported
by industry representa-
tives and system stake-
holders across the prov-
ince.
In the weeks follow-
ing Minister Goertzens ics, their patients and the
announcement, concerns
have been expressed re-
garding the closure and
consolidation of ambu-
lance stations in some
communities as part of
the restructuring plan.
The uncertainty that ac-
companies this proposed
change is understandable.

But the uncertainty of be-
ing able to provide pre-
dictable and professional
paramedic service to rural
Manitobans without this
reform should be cause
for even greater concern.
Ambulance service in
Manitoba has undergone
significant growth over the
past 20 years. The respon-
sibility has shifted from
primarily transporting pa-
tients quickly to the near-
est hospital for treatment,
to the delivery of acute
and advanced health care
by paramedics. Ensuring
all ambulances in Mani-
toba are staffed 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, by
well-educated and highly
skilled paramedics is nec-
essary to ensure patients
have access to the right
care at the right time.
Call volumes across
the province have in-
creased dramatically,
placing a strain on am-
bulance services that rely
mainly on local volunteers
and on-call staff. Many
stations operate with staff
that are on-call for periods
that can exceed 96 hours,
not only posing significant
safety risks for paramed-
public, but also resulting in
temporary station closures
and service outages due to
fatigue. To continue pro-
viding service in this man-
ner is unsafe, unpredict-
able and unsustainable.
The creation of the
Medical Transportation
Coordination Centre,
Manitobas provincial land
and air ambulance dis-
patch facility in Brandon,
has improved timely ac-
cess to paramedic resourc-
es across the province. Not
only can dispatchers en-
sure that the closest avail-
able ambulance is sent to
emergency calls, regard-
less of where it is stationed,
but they can also relocate
ambulances from one area
to another to ensure ad-
equate regional coverage
based on current availabil-
ity and anticipated need.
Response times cannot
and should not be mea-
sured by proximity to an
EMS garage.
The proposed new
station configurations
have been developed us-
ing mapping data, popula-
tion figures and historical
call volume information
not available to us just
ten years ago. We are now
able to more closely align
available resources with
service demand. Al-
though the time it takes
paramedics to arrive at a
paramedic stations does
aim to improve projected
overall response time cov-
erage in rural areas.
The proposed restruc-
turing of paramedic ser-
vices will take time. No
station will be closed or
consolidated before the
system has achieved the
staffing and infrastructure
necessary to manage that
change safely and effec-
tively.
EMS throughout rural
Manitoba is steeped rich
in history. Many com-
munity members and po-
litical leaders take great
pride in having built and
maintained a local ambu-
lance station for decades.
But as the demand placed
on our paramedic servic-
es continues to increase,
so too does the need for
these system changes to
ensure that we are able to
deliver those services to
all patients in a predict-
able, responsive, sustain-
able and safe manner.

taph and parking is to be restricted along the river bank
opposite the block where the bowling alley is located.
1967 The Tremont Hotel is about to undergo a mas-
sive $140,000 renovation. It will now be called the Alpine-
Tremont and will be extended seven feet in front for a
new entrance while the beverage room will be enlarged,
dining room changed to a coffee shop and a complete
renovation of the top floor.
1977 Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and his
three sons Justin, Michel and Sacha, spent a quiet but
enjoyable 48 hours at Cleark lake and Riding Mountain
National Park.
1997 Erickson Royal Bank has been closed since Feb-
ruary due to the identification of a fungus. Renovations
are continuing and the re-opening is scheduled for early
October.

Dauphin Herald Two brothers have been sentenced to
15 years incarceration for their involvement with a fire in
Dauphin in August 2013. The incident sent a 17-year-old
to hospital with almost 95 percent of his body burned
and destroyed a 6th Avenue N.E. dwelling.

Reston Recorder An antique grader, the first used in
the R.M. of Pipestone is now on display just outside the

residence in Melita and as a result, RCMP seized more
than 24 ounces of Methamphetemine, five ounces of
Marijuana, 56 grams of Shatter, a small amount of co-
caine, hash, a firearm and money.
Souris Plaindealer The view looking south over Victo-
ria Park is about to get a little less beautiful. Three large
Elm trees on Cresent Avenue will soon be removed due
to extensive damage from Dutch Elm disease. Quite a
few trees on the western side of Souris will meet the
same fate.
Carberry News Express Lesly Feldman, author of
the book, I Am Just Like You was at the Sidney gen-
eral Store signing her recently published book. With the
book, she wants to help teach children at a young age to
respect and celebrate the differences in people and stop
the bullying.

Weather Great For Western Days

The Fire Department also hosted a pie eating con-

test, which was new to the festival this year and held in
place of the previous perogy eating contest. This was a
lot of fun for the spectators and participants, said Le-
wandoski. With a few pies leftover, they were even able
to auction off the remaining pies, some selling for over
$50 each!
Another event that was keeping the crowd busy was
the Show and Shine car show at the Rec Centre grounds.
There were nearly 90 entries, and the show featured
some beautiful classic vehicles. The same people who
put on the car show also put on the Car Stall raffle, in
which people could buy tickets to guess how long an
old, beat up Jeep would run for once it was revved up.

The Jeep was generously donated by Wesman Salvage
of Brandon and ran for two minutes and eight seconds
before stalling out. This attraction generated a lot of
enthusiasm and excitement from Western Days specta-
tors.
On Sunday, the final day of the busy western Days
weekend, there was a splash park for the kids, which
was well attended, and according to Lewandoski, the
kids had a riot.
Like any event, Sandy Lakes annual Western Days
weekend would not be possible without volunteers,
sponsors and those who come out to attend the many
events. We really appreciate all the volunteer help that
we got this year, it was terrific, concluded Lewandoski.
This is the major community activity in Sandy Lake, and
without the help of the volunteers and the Fire Depart-
ment, it would not be the success that it is.

Spray the grout with
3% hydrogen peroxide and
then gently scrub with fine
sandpaper and dish soap.

power the mothball smell
with another smell which
will eventually disappear
on its own. Find a tray and
place it on the bottom of
the trunk, sprinkle the
tray with either a gener-

There are many popu-
lar commercial products
on the market, manu-
factured specifically for
power washers. Here is a
homemade formula that
was submitted to me, I
have not tried it but was
told that it works well.
Into a bucket combine:
four gallons bleach, three
ounces dish soap and one
gallon water. Spray the
stones, being careful not to
hit anything green with the
solution.
Another option is to
make a wooden frame.
Cover it with wire mesh
similar to chicken wire but
with smaller holes. Find a
large, empty bucket and
place the frame over the
bucket. Scoop the rocks
onto the wire. The dirt will
fall through the wire. Pour
the rocks sitting on the
wire into a separate bucket
and wash them with dish
soap and water. Rinse with
water. This is a long pro-
cess, perfect for very small
amounts of rock.
Be sure never to com-
bine bleach with any prod-
uct. Sometimes people
may look at a bottle of
bleach and wonder, Why
shouldnt this be mixed
with ammonia? The an-
swer? Huge danger! Chlo-

WINNIFRED FLORENCE GOUDIE FLORENCE USICK HILDEGARDE SUMMERS

It is with great sadness Florence Usick was Hildegarde Summers of

we announce the passing of our
beloved wife, mother, grand-
mother and great grandmother,
Winnifred Wynne Goudie.
Born in Birtle, Manitoba, the 4th
child of John and Florence John-
son.
As a young girl, her family
moved to Walpole, Saskatchewan.
At 18 she struck out on her own,
moving to Winnipeg where she worked
in Eatons mail order department. Later she joined
the Manitoba Telephone System. Realizing that city life was not
her cup of tea she returned to Walpole in 1947 and secured a
position with SaskTel in Wolseley. Not only was this a good
career choice but it was there she met the love of her life, the
handsome railroader Robert Goudie. They married in Winni-
peg on July 8th, 1949. The railroad found them raising their four
children in Estevan, Souris and Minnedosa. When the children
were grown Wynne managed the Robinson store in Minnedosa
for many years. In their retirement, they moved to Dauphin and
were active members of the Royal Canadian Legion. In 2016,
they made the biggest move of their lives to Powell River, BC to
be near family.
No matter what Wynne did she did it well! You never
went to her home that you werent made to feel welcome and
served an incredible meal or a delectable dainty. Wynne loved
to garden, was an avid curling enthusiast and a loyal Blue Jays
fan. Predeceased by her parents, brothers Walter and John
Johnson, sisters Clarice Halland and Delta Cameron and her
daughter in-law Fay Goudie; she leaves to mourn her husband
of 68 years Robert (Powell River, BC), daughter Janine (John)
Welsh (Powell River, BC), sons Greg (Marlene) (Calgary, AB),
Brian (The Pas, MB), Garry (Jane) (Crossfield, AB); 7 grand-
children, 12 great grandchildren, sister Lillian Frazer, brother
Clifford Johnson and sisters-in-law Ida and Verna Johnson.
Rest in peace knowing that you are cherished and through
us will live on forever!

Curtis was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba, to Johnny and
Gladys Johnson. As a young man he joined the U.S. Navy and
attended dental technician school. In 1970 he married Carol
Zink and in 1978 the family relocated to Penhold, Alberta.
Curtis was very active in the community, serving as councillor
and then mayor of Penhold for two terms. He enjoyed meeting
and working with people, which helped him excel in his careers

Frontier Artists Showcase Their Creativity

Minnedosa Beach Centen-
nial Pavilion on Monday,
August 14th. The purpose
of the event was to show-
case the fruits of their la-
bour over the course of two
six-week programs. The
two programs allowed the
participants to learn differ-
ent styles of art, under the
tutelage of Marlies Soltys,
from Inspire Studio. Marl-
ies provided the course at a
discounted price because
of the importance she sees
in the Frontier program.
The group consisted of
Linda, Donna, Sherman,
Orville, Jason, Devron and
Jordie from Frontier, how-
ever, Devron was unable to
attend the show. During
the first six-week program,
there were seven members
participating, and in the
second six-week program
there were about five par-
ticipants. Each of the art-
ists sat proudly by their
own table full of artwork.

ly answered any questions
that viewers had for them.
Throughout the course
of the program, partici-
pants learned how to cre-
ate many different styles of
art. They did watercolour,
drawing, canvas painting,
alcohol ink-on-fire, played
with clay, created collages,
painted rocks, and painted
on fabric. According to
Soltys, they revisited the
alcohol ink-on-fire and the
clay, since those were the
real crowd favourites dur-
ing the program. She also
noted that it was a favou-
rite amongst the visitors to
the art show as well, they
are so vibrant.
During the art show,
Jordie showed off some
of her drawings, which
were inspirational and
extremely detailed, while
Linda proudly pointed out
her purple sparkly canvas
painting. Orville said that
his favourite piece was his
kept entertained by his
music selection, as the in-
house DJ.
Soltys was extremely
proud of each of her art
students, noting that dur-
ing the six-week program,
my favourite part was the
relationships that I built
with everyone, by far. Ev-
ery one of the participants
was so much fun, and
they were so enthusiastic.
Even though something
may have scared them,
they did it anyway. She
thoroughly enjoyed work-
ing with each of the par-
ticipants, because they
were so kind and genuine.

a week, and the art show
