Rocks are rollin as Oregon picks up latest craze

Its all pretty simple for the latest
craze sweeping the area people dec-
orating rocks and leaving them in a
variety of public places for others to
find and relocate. Dane County has its
own group Dane County ROCKS!
and its membership is growing across
the county as more and more people
catch on.
The group had 1,086 members as
of Tuesday and continues to grow.
Founder Christa Klute-Sime of Cross
Plains said she started the group after
getting the idea while she and her
daughter were visiting Vero Beach,
Fla., during spring break earlier this
year. She said the groups singular
purpose is simple to spread joy
though it encompasses much more.

Grant brings leaf vacuum

Pilot program begins this
fall in limited area by

A $20,000 grant will help pay for
a pilot program to collect leaves and
compost them in the Town of Dunn.
Officials learned earlier this month
of the grant from the Madison Metro-
politan Sewerage District. The money
will help the town pay for a leaf vac-
uum, with the goal of reducing phos-
phorus entering Lake Kegonsa and
the Yahara River Watershed.
The Town Board approved the pur-
chase of the $44,300 leaf vacuum July
7, contingent on the town receiving
the grant. The equipment is expected
to arrive in October.
The project will pick up leaves at
the roadside beginning this fall for
a limited area of homes along Lake
Kegonsa. After the pilot, the town
plans to expand the program each
year to a larger area.
The purpose is to prevent leaves
from sitting out in the rain and leach-
ing phosphorus into the lakes, said
Dunn business manager Cathy Has-
slinger.
The town applied for the grant in
June and learned Aug. 7 it had been
awarded the funding, which was
offered as part of MMSDs Yahara
WINS anti-phosphorus program.
Hasslinger explained the town is
partnering with a citizen-led group,
Friends of Lake Kegonsa, FOLKS,
and together they plan to collect
leaves from as many as 600 homes.
We will be getting homes that are
in the Town of Dunn all along Lake
Kegonsa, as well as the houses direct-
ly across the street, she said. We

The town is starting small because
officials want to figure out how to do
it quickly and efficiently.

Library would be on right side of Main St.
This letter is in response to
a guest editorial in last weeks
Observer. The North Main Street
neighborhood is excited about the
possibility of a new public library
on the lot of the former Method-
ist Church. Many children living
there and attending daycares in
that area will benefit greatly. They
do not think the location is on
the wrong side of Main Street.
I find it remarkable that a cit-
izen who never spoke up at the
many Planning Commission,
library board and village board
meetings regarding the former
church property has written an
800-word letter criticizing deci-
sions that were made. Many
interested citizens spoke up at
those meetings. I attended those
meetings along with owners of 22
historic homes that surround the
former church property. None of
us want high density housing to
be built literally in our backyards.
Mr. Noeldner proposes that option
for our backyards, not for his
backyard. If he had attended those
all sides of the issue, the well-
thought-out arguments pro and
con and the intricate conversa-
tions that led to a well-conceived
plan to consider that site for the
new library.
There are only two available
locations in the heart of the
village to build a larger library
and a new senior center; the two
buildings will not both fit on the
same lot, so one of them needs to
move to the church lot. There is
less expense and fewer logistical
problems when moving the mass
amount of books just once, rather
than moving them to a temporary
location while rebuilding on the
current library site, and then mov-
ing the books back.
In his letter, Mr. Noeldner
refers to a lousy return on
investment for the village and
building up Oregons historic
downtown. I urge Mr. Noeldner
to give attention to the upkeep on
his own property.

Oregon got a pair of big plays
in the second half to rally from
a halftime deficit en route to a
24-14 victory on the road in a
Badger Conference crossover
game at DeForest.
The Panthers trailed 7-3 at
halftime but fought back with an
interception from Jahlil Turner
and long touchdown run by Kar-
delle Phillips.
Turner jumped an out route and
ran 40 yards for a pick-six ear-
ly in the third quarter. DeForest
running back Carson Foster got
one hand on the third-and-long
pass, but bobbled the ball, which
Turner took out of the receivers
hands. It was off to the races from
as Turner ran untouched into the
Norskies end zone to put the
Panthers up 10-7.
Phillips broke the game open
with a 80-yard rushing touch-
down on a halfback counter in the
fourth quarter to extend the lead
to 17-7.
The play was blocked really

the rest once he got past the first
eight, coach Dan Kissling said.
DeForest, which scored both of

Phillips finished with 148 yards
rushing on six carries for a Pan-
thers team that rang up 312 yards
on the ground on 39 attempts.

ers with five catches for 20 yards
and Jack Haufle caught three balls
for 11 yards.
The Panthers victory matched
their win total for all of last sea-
son.
Our kids know that last years
team was better than their record
showed and they have really
been working hard each practice
to make sure we dont go back-
ward, Kissling said.
