RBI Die Ges chichte der Architektur ist die Geschichte da-
von, welche Faktoren zur Formbildung - oder in unserem
Sinne: Raumbildung - herangezogen beziehungsweise le-
gitimiert werden. Ein Aspekt, der in der Geschichte des
Bauens bis he ute auf unterschiedlichste Weise behandelt
wurde, ist die gegense itige Durchdringung von Form und
Bautechnik, die Frage nach der Wechselwi rkung von Kons-
truktion und Raum. Jede Bauperiode suchte nach neuen
Konstruktionen . Innerhalb dieses kontinuierlichen Prozes-
ses befeuerte vor rund zweihundert Jahren die industri -
elle Produktion mit ihren stark erweiterten Moglichkeiten
die Entwicklung der Bautechnik. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahr-
hunderts kam ein grundlegend neues Verstiindnis von
Technik und Technologie als Foige unterschiedlicher trei-
bender Faktoren hinzu . Neue Naturerkenntnisse, die neue
Rezeption von Ingenieurkonstruktionen, vor allem aber
auch die okonomischen Vorteile des Skelettbaus - des-
sen Genese der sogenannte ,Chicago frame' darstellt -
fGhrten zu neuen Bauformen. Diese erzeugten mit ihrer
Tendenz zur Auflosunq von Masse und Wand neue Raum -
vorstellungen, mit Qualitiiten, die wir heute auf keinen
Fall missen mochten , R. Buckminster Fuller hatte bereits
Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts die Idee von Architektur
als Forschungsprodukt aus dem Labor verfolgt. R. Buck-
minster Fuller war dabei primiir an der geometrischen
Leistungsfiihigkeit einer aus der Natur kommenden Struk-
tur interess iert und versuchte, diese ohne konkrete raurn -
Iiche oder funktionale Bindung einzufGhren. Sein Ziel der
maximalen Dynamik und Effizienz spiegelte riiumliche
Aspekte mehr oder minder weg, trotzdem stehen seine
Strukturen aber keineswegs im Verdacht eines plakativen,
zeichenhaften Brandinggedankens, der vielen heutigen
.nat urlich orientierten' Strukturen anhaftet . Sp iitestens
seitdem Entwerfen als sich selbst generierender St ruk-
turbildungsprozess verstanden wird, scheint eine eigent-
Iiche Negierung des Raumes in Gang gekommen zu sein.
Basierte bei R. Buckminster Fuller die Idee, Natur mittels
Technik nachzubilden , noch auf dem mathematisch-ab-
strakten Koordinatensystem, versuchen heute viele bio-
nische und biomorphe Entwiirfe lebendige Organismen
zu simulieren. Diese Positionen lassen aufser Acht, dass
architektonischer Raum wesentlich durch sein Verhiiltn is
zwischen innen und au Ben charakterisiert wird: Ein le-
bendiger Organismus ist nicht begehbar und garantiert
deshalb in keiner Weise eine sinnfiillige Struktur fur In-
nenriiume, die auf den Menschen zugeschnitten sein mus-
sen. AuBerdem sind Lebewesen, die solchen .Blo bs' als
Vorbild dienen , auf Beweglichkeit angelegt, was dem .star-
ren' Haus diametral widerspricht.

mised . One aspec t that has been treated most variedly in
the h istory of building up until now is the mutual per-
meat ion of form a nd cons truction al te chnology, the ques-
tion of the intera ction of con str uc ti on and sp ace. Each
building era h as searched for new cons tructions . Th e de-
velopment of building technology within this continu -
ous process wa s first sp arked some two-hundred-years
ago by the hugely expa n de d opportunities offered by the
advent of industrial pro du ction. This was further com-
plemented at the en d of the 19th century by a fu ndamen-
tally new understanding of technics a nd technology, pro-
p elled by different factors : new knowledge about nature
a n d the n ew rec eption of engineered cons tr uc ti on s, but
abo ve all the econom ic ad vantages of skele ton con st ruc-
tion (its gen esis represented by the so-ca lle d 'Ch icago
frame'), leading to new building forms . These buildings,
with their tenden cy to dissolve the mass and walls , gen-
er ated n ew sp atial id eas we would be hard-put to do
without today. As early as the middle of the 20t h cen-
tury, Buckminster Fuller pursued the idea of ar chitec-
ture as an obje ct of laboratory expe rimentation . Buck-
minster Fuller was primarily intereste d in the geometric
performance of the structures of nature, and attempte d
to implement them without any sp ecific spa tial or func -
tionallinkages . His ai m of maximal dynamics and effi-
ciency blended spa tial aspects mor e-or -less out, but n ev-
ertheless his struc tures h av e nothing of the bold sy m-
bolic branding associ ate d wi t h many of today's 'n atu rally
orientated' structures. The negation of spa ce appears to
have set in at the lat est with the con ception of design as
a self-gen erating structure-production process. Wh er eas
Buckminster Fuller's ide a of copy i ng nature using tech-
nics remained based on the m athematically abstract co-
ordinate syst em , m any bionic and biomorphic des igns
nowada ys attempt to simulate li ving organisms. These
approaches ignore the fact that in essence ar chitectural
space is ch aracterised by the relation between interior
and exterior. A li ving organism is not tr aversable, and for
this reason can by no means assure manifest structure
for interior spaces, which h ave to be tailored to human
beings. Mor eover, the living creatu res that serve as a
model for su ch 'blobs' are motional entitie s, which di a-
metrically contradicts the 'standstill' of a house.

Form be schreibt er die beunruhigende Erfahrung , die
Statue von Innen zu sehen: Die Konvexitiiten und Konka-
vitaten , die im AuBeren zu r Bildung der Figur notig sind ,
bleiben im Innern ohne verstiindliche Bedeutung - s ie
sind zusammenhanglos und ohne jede Ahnl ichke it zum
menschlichen Kerpe r. Die Formen taugen zwar zur Abbil -
du ng eines Gegenstandes von aufsen, funktion iere n je-
doch fur den Innen raum und das Aufhalte n darin nicht,
weil s ie schlicht keinen Sinn e rg eben .
RBI Raumbildung kann nicht blofses Resultat einer An-
wendung von gegenwiirtigen Produktionsmethoden ode r
neuen strukturellen Mogl ichk e iten se in. Das Bewusstsein
fur d ie riiumliche Art ikulation muss vo r den techn ischen
ode r konst ruktiven Experimenten kommen, nicht ihnen
folgen. Techno logie und Technik sollen nutzbar gemacht
werden, um riiumliche Absichten mit neuen Mitteln urn-
zusetzen , d ie Konst ruktion bildet datur e ine Basis oder
Grammatik, d ie wir behe rrsch en mussen, was schon Le
Corbu sie r geforde rt hat. Sinnfiillig wird diese aber erst,
wenn die Integ ration der konstruktiven Elemente dem Er-
zielen e ine r bestimmten Raumwirkung dient . 1m Idealfall
entsp rechen dabe i raumb ildende Elemente den struk-tu-
re ll tragenden Elementen. St ruktu relle Elemente rniissen
s ich aber nicht auf e ine Tragwe rksfunktion red uzie re n -
und kennan da s , bedingt durch heutige energetische An-
forderungen, oft auch nicht me hr -, sondern stehen im-

discon cert ing effec t of seeing the sta tue from the inside .
The convexity and co ncavity required to for m the exte ri-
or of the figure of t he statue re main unintelligible from
the insid e; they a re di sconnected and lack a ll si m ilarity
to the human bod y. Th e for ms m ay serve to mould the
mod el of a n objec t from the ou ts ide, but they fail to func-
ti on for t he interi or space an d for the con dition of bei ng
in it , because t hey quite simply ma ke no sense.
RS I Sp at ial pro duc tion can not be the si mp le result
of the ap plication of conte m porary method s of pro duc-
ti on or n ew st r uc tural p ossibilities. Awareness for spa-
tia l articula tion h as to preced e techn ic al or cons t ructive
exp er imentation , not follow it . Technology a nd techn ics
sh ou ld be ex ploited in order to realise spa tial intent ion s
by n ew mea n s , for which the construction constitutes a
basis or gra mmar that we h ave to mast er, as a lready ca lled
for by Le Corbusier. However , this on ly becom es mani fest
whe n the integration of the cons tr uc tive ele ments se rves
to ac hieve a part ic u la r spatial effect. Ideally, space-de-
ter m in ing ele me nts correspond to the struc tural load-
b ear ing el em ents. St r u ctu ra l ele me nts , h ow ever, do no t
have to be redu ced to a load-bear ing fu nc tion (and in-
