Area of the right triangle = (1/2) * b * h
h2 = 102 - 82 = 36
h=6
Area = (1/2) * 8 * 6
= 24

4. One side of rectangular field is 15 meter and one of its diagonals is 17 meter. Then find the area of the
field?
Answer : 120 m2
Explanation :
We know that, h2 = b2+h2
Other side = ((17)2 - (15)2)
= (289 - 225)
= 64
= 8 meter
Area = Length * Breadth
= 15 * 8 m2
= 120 m2

5. The ratio between the length and the breadth of a rectangular park is 3 : 2. If a man cycling along the
boundary of the park at the speed of 12 km/hr completes one round in 8 minutes, then find the area of the
park (in sq. m) ?
Answer : 153600 sq. m
Explanation :
We are having speed and time so we can calculate the distance or perimeter.
Then by applying the formula of perimeter of rectangle we get the value of length and breadth
Perimeter = Distance travelled in 8 minutes,
Perimeter = (12000 / 60) * 8 = 1600 meter. [because Distance = Speed * Time]
Given, length is 3x and width is 2x
We know perimeter of rectangle is 2(L + B)
So, 2(3x + 2x) = 1600

3
x = 160
So Length = 160 * 3 = 480 meter
and Width = 160 * 2 = 320 meter
Finally, Area = length * breadth
= 480 * 320
= 153600 sq. m

6. Find the percentage increase in the area of a rectangle, if each of its sides is increased by 20% ?
Answer : 44%
Explanation :
Let original length = x metres
Original breadth = y metres
Original area = xy m2
New Length= (120 / 100) x
= (6 / 5) x
New Breadth = (120 / 100)y
= (6/5)y
New Area = (6/5)x (6/5)y
New Area = (36/25)xy
Area Difference = (36/25)xy - xy
= (11/25) xy
Increase% = (Difference /Actual) 100
= (11/25)xy (1/xy) 100
= 44%

7.The area of a rectangle is 460 square metres. If the length is 15% more than the breadth, what is the

Answer : 20
Explanation :
Let breadth = x metres.
Then length = (115x/100)metres.
460 = x (115/100) x
x2 = 460 * (100/115)
x2 = 400
x = 20

8. A rectangular field is to be fenced on three sides leaving a side of 20 feet uncovered. If the area of the
field is 680 sq.ft, how many feet of fencing will be required ?
Answer : 88 feet
Explanation :
Given with length and area, so we can find the breadth.
as Length * Breadth = Area
20 * Breadth = 680
Breadth = 34 feet
Area to be fenced = 2B + L = (2 * 34) + 20
= 88 feet

9. The perimeters of two squares are 40 cm and 32 cm. Find the perimeter of a third square whose area is
equal to the difference of the areas of the two squares?
Answer : 24 cm
Explanation :
We know perimeter of square = 4(side)
So Side of first square = 40/4 = 10 cm
Side of second square = 32/4 = 8 cm

4
Area of third Square = 10 * 10 - 8 * 8
= 36 cm
So side of third square = 6 [because area of square = side * side]
Perimeter = 4 * Side
=4*6
= 24 cm

10. A courtyard is 25 meter long and 16 meter board is to be paved with bricks of dimensions 20 cm by 10
cm. Find the total number of bricks required?

original breadth = b
Then, original area = lb
Length is halved
New length = (l/2)
breadth is tripled
New breadth = 3b
New area = (l/2) * 3b
= (3lb/2)
Increase in area
= new area - original area
=(3lb/2) - lb

5
= lb/2
Percentage increase in area
= (increase in area/original area) * 100
= (lb/2) / lb) * 100
= (1/2) * 100
= 50%

length = 115% of breadth.
Length * breadth = 460 m2
115% of breadth * breadth = 460m2
(115/100) * breadth * breadth = 460 m2
breadth * breadth = (460 * 100 ) / 115 m2
breadth * breadth = 400 m2
(breadth)2 = 400m2
breadth = 20 m

18. A large field of 700 hectares is divided into two parts. The difference of the areas of the two parts is one-
fifth of the average of the two areas. What is the area of the smaller part in hectares?
Answer : x = 315
Explanation :
Average of the two areas = (700/2) = 350
one-fifth of the average of the two areas = (350/5) = 70
Difference of the two areas = 70
Let area of the smaller part = x hectares.
Then, area of the larger part = x + 70 hectares.
X + (x + 70) = 700
2x = 630
x = 315

19.The length of a room is 5.5 m and width is 3.75 m. What is the cost of paying the floor by slabs at the
rate of Rs.800 per sq. Metre?
Answer : Rs.16500
Explanation :
Area = 5.5 * 3.75 sq. Metre.

= Rs.16500

20.The length of a rectangle is twice its breadth. If its length is decreased by 5 cm and breadth is increased
by 5cm, the area of the rectangle is increased by 75 sq.cm. What is the length of the rectangle?
Answer : 40cm
Explanation :
Let breadth = x cm
Then, length = 2xcm
Area = x * 2x = 2x2 sq.cm.
New length = (2x- 5)cm
New breadth = (x + 5)cm
New area = (2x - 5)(x + 5)sq.cm.
Given that, new area = initial area + 75 sq.cm.
(2x- 5)(x + 5) = 2x2 + 75
2x2+10x- 5x- 25 = 2x2 + 75
5x- 25 = 75
5x = 75 + 25 = 100
x = 100 / 5
= 20cm
Length = 2x = 2 * 20
= 40cm

21. The breadth of a rectangular field is 60% of its length. If the perimeter of the field is 800 m, find out the
area of the field?
Answer : 37500 m2
Explanation :
Breadth = 60%of length
Perimeter = 800m
2(length + breadth) = 800
2(length + 60% of length) = 800
2(160% of length) = 800
160% of length = 400
length = (400 * 100) / 160 = 250m
breadth = (250 * 60) / 100 = 150m
Area = 250 * 150 = 37500 m2

22. A room 5m, 44cm long and 3m, 74cm broad needs to be paved with square tiles. What will be the least
number of square tiles required to cover the floor?
Answer : 176
Explanation :
Length = 5m 44 cm = 544cm
Breadth = 3m 74cm = 374cm
Area = 544 * 374 cm2
Now we need to find out HCF(Highest Common Factor) of 544 and 374.
HCF of 544 and 374 = 34
Therefore, side length of largest square tile = 34cm
Area of each square tile = 34 * 34 cm2
Number of tiles required
= 544 * 374 / (34 * 34)
= 16811
= 176

23. The length of a rectangular plot is 20 metres more than its breadth. If the cost of fencing the plot is at
Rs.26.50 per metre is Rs.5300, what is the length of the plot in metres?
Answer : 60m
Explanation :
Length of the fence = (5300 / 26.50) = 200m
2(length + breadth) = 200 m
2(breadth + 20 + breadth) = 200m ( length = breadth + 20)
breadth + 20 + breadth = 100m
breadth = 40m
Length = 40 + 20 = 60m

24. There is a plot which is rectangular in shape and it area is 460 square metres. What will be breadth of
the plot if length of plot is 15% more than the breadth of plot ?
Answer : 20 meter
Explanation :
l b = 460m2........(i)
Lets suppose breadth of plot is = b
Length will be,
l = b ((100+15)/100)
l = 115b/100........(ii)
From (i) and (ii), we get :
(115b / 100) b = 460
b2 = 46000/115
= 400

8
b = 400
= 20 meter

25. What is the percentage increase in the area of a rectangle, if each of its sides is increased by 20%?
Answer : 44%
Explanation :
Let Original length = l
Original breadth = b
Then original area = lb
Length is increased by 20%
New length = l * (120/100) = 1.2 l
Breadth is increased by 20%
New breadth = b * (120/100) = 1.2b
New area = 1.2l * 1.2b = 1.44lb
Increase in area = new area - original area
= 1.44lb - lb
= 0.44lb
Percentage increase in area
= (increase in area/original area) * 100
= (0.44lb/lb) * 100 = 44%

26. If the difference between the length and breadth of a rectangle is 23m and its perimeter is 206 m, what is
its area?
Answer : 2520m2

length = breadth + 23
Therefore,
Perimeter = 2 (l + b) = 206m
= 2( breadth + 23 + b)
= (2 * breadth + 2 * 23 + 2 * b)
= 4 * breadth + (2 * 23) = 206m
breadth = 40m
length = 40 + 23 = 63m
Area = 63 * 40 = 2520m2

27. The ratio between the perimeter and the breadth of a rectangle is 5:1. If the area of the rectangle is 216
sq. cm, what is the length of the rectangle?
Answer : 18 cm
Explanation :
Let perimeter = 5xcm
breadth = xcm
Then, length = (5x - 2x) /2 = 3x/2 cm
Area = lb
Area = 216cm2
(3x/2) * x = 216
3x2 = 216 * 2
x2 = 72 * 2 = 36 * 2 * 2
x = 6 * 2 = 12
length = (3x/2)
= ( 3 * 12) / 2
= 18 cm

What is the area of the room?
Answer : 27 feet
Explanation :
Diagonal, d = 7(1/2) feet = 15/2 feet
Breadth, b = 4(1/2) feet = 9/2 feet
In the right-angled triangle PQR,
l2 = (15/2)2- (9/2)2
= (225/4) - (81/4) = 144/4
l = 144/4
= 12/2 feet
= 6 feet
Area = lb
= 6 * (9/2)
= 27 feet

29. The diagonal of a rectangle is 41cm and its area is 20 sq. cm. What is the perimeter of the rectangle?
Answer : 18cm
Explanation :
For a rectangledd2 = l2+ b2
where l = length, b = breadth and d = diagonal of the of the rectangle
d = 41 cm
Area = lb = 20
d2 = l2+b2
l2+b2 = (41)2 = 41 (1)
Area = lb = 20 cm2(2)
(a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
using the above formula, we have
(l+b)2 = l2+ 2lb + b2
= (l2 + b2) + 2lb
= 41 + (2 * 20)
= 81
(l + b) = 81 = 9cm
perimeter = 2(l + b)
=2*9
= 18cm

30. Find the length of each side of an equilateral triangle having an area of 43 cm 2 ?

Let the diagonals be PR and SQ
Let PR = 72cm, SQ = 30cm
PO = OR = 72/2 = 36cm
O = OQ = 30/2 = 15cm
PQ = QR = RS = SP
= 362 + 152
= 1296 + 225
= 1521
= 39cm

33. The base of a parallelogram is (p + 4), altitude to the base is (p - 3) and the area is (p 2- 4), find out its
actual area.
Answer : 60 sq. Units
Explanation :
Area of a parallelogram, A = bh
where b is the base and h is the height of the parallelogram
p2- 4 = (p + 4)(p- 3)
p2- 4 = p2 + p- 12
-4 = p- 12
p = 12- 4 = 8
Hence, actual area = (p2 - 4)
= 82- 4
= 64 - 4
= 60 sq. Units

34. A rectangular plot measuring 90 metres by 50 metres needs to be enclosed by wire fencing such that
poles of the fence will be kept 5 metres apart. How many poles will be needed?
Answer : 56
Explanation :
Perimeter of a rectangle = 2(l+b)
where l is the length and b is the breadth of the rectangle.
Length of the wire fencing = perimeter
= 2(90 + 50) = 280 metre
Two poles will be kept 5 metres apart. The poles will be placed along the perimeter of the rectangular plot,
not in a single straight line which is very important.
Hence, number of poles required
= 280 / 5 = 56

35. A tank is 25 m long, 12 m wide and 6 m deep. Find the cost of plastering its walls and bottom at 75
paise per sq. m?
Answer : Rs. 558
Explanation :
Area to be plastered = [2(l + b) x h] + (l x b)
= {[2(25 + 12) x 6] + (25 x 12)} m2
= (444 + 300) m2
= 744 m2
Cost of plastering = Rs. (744 * (75 / 100)) = Rs. 558.

36. A farmer wishes to start a 100 sq. m. rectangular vegetable garden. Since he has only 30 meter barbed
wire, he fences three sides of the garden letting his house compound wall act as the fourth side fencing.
Then find the dimension of the garden?
Answer : 20 m * 5 m
Explanation :
From the given, 2b + l = 30
l = 30 - 2b
Area = 100m2
l * b = 100
b(30 - 2b) = 100
b2 - 15b + 50 = 0
(b-10)(b-5) = 0
b = 10 or b = 5
when b = 10 then l = 10
when b = 5 then l = 20
Since the garden is rectangular so we will take value of breadth 5.
So its dimensions are 20 m * 5 m

37. An error 2% in excess is made while measuring the side of a square. Find the percentage of error in the
calculated area of the square ?
Answer : 4.04%
Explanation :
100 cm is read as 102 cm.
A1 = (100 x 100) cm2 and A2 (102 x 102) cm2.
(A2 - A1) = [(102)2 - (100)2]
= (102 + 100) * (102 - 100)
= 404 cm2.
Percentage error = (404 / 100 x 100) * 100% = 4.04%

38. The perimeters of 5 squares are 24 cm, 32 cm, 40 cm, 76 cm and 80 cm respectively. Find the perimeter
of another square equal in area to the sum of the area of these square ?
Answer : 124cm
Explanation :
Clearly first we need to find the areas of the given squares, for that we need its side.
Side of sqaure = Perimeter/4
So sides are,
(24/4), (32/4), (40/4), (76/4), (80/4)
= 6, 8, 10, 19, 20
Area of new square will be
= [62 + 82 + 102 + 192 + 202]
= 36 + 64 + 100 + 361 + 400 = 961 cm2
Side of new Sqaure
= 961
= 31cm

12
Required perimeter = (4 * 31) = 124cm

Answer : 7cm
Explanation :
Let the lengths of the line segments be x and x + 2 cm
then,
(x + 2)2 - x2 = 32
x2 + 4x + 4 - x2 = 32
4x = 28
x = 7cm

44. The base of a triangle is 15 cm and height is 12 cm. Find the height of another triangle of double the
area having the base 20 cm?
Answer : 18cm
Explanation :
Area of triangle, A1 = (1/2) base height
= (1/2) 15 12
= 90cm2
Area of second triangle = 2 A1
= 180 cm2
(1/2) 20 height =180
height = 18cm

45. The sides of a triangle are in the ratio of (1/2):(1/3):(1/4). If the perimeter is 52 cm, then find the length
of the smallest side?
Answer : 12 cm
Explanation :
Ratio of sides = (1/2):(1/3):(1/4)
= 6:4:3
Perimeter = 52cm
So sides are = (52 (6/13))cm, (52 (4/13))cm, (52 (3/13))cm
a = 24 cm, b = 16 cm and c = 12 cm
Length of the smallest side = 12 cm

46. The height of an equilateral triangle is 10 cm. find its area.

Answer : 100 /3 cm2
Explanation :
Let each side be a cm, then
(a/2)2+102 = a2
(a2 - a2/4) = 100
(3a2)/4 = 100
a2 = 400/3
Area = ((3/4) * (400/3)) cm2
= 100 /3 cm2

47. If the area of a square with the side a is equal to the area of a triangle with base a, then find the altitude
of the triangle?
Answer : 2a
Explanation :
We know area of square = a2
Area of triangle = (1/2) a h
(1/2) a h = a2
h = 2a

48. A triangle and a parallelogram are constructed on the same base such that their areas are equal. If the
altitude of the parallelogram is 100 m , then find the altitude of the triangle ?
Answer : 200m
Explanation :
Let the triangle and parallelogram have common base b,
let the Altitude of triangle is h1 and of parallelogram is h2(which is equal to 100 m), then
Area of triangle = (1/2) b h1
Area of rectangle = b h2
(1/2) b h1 = b h2
(1/2) b h1 = b 100
h1 = 100 2 = 200m
