HMath2 Test #1 (Right Triangle Trig and Square Roots) SAMPLE

INSTRUCTIONS: Calculators OK, but only problems involving trig functions should have decimal answers. All
other should have EXACT ANSWERS. You are NOT required to rationalize. Round decimal answers to 1 decimal
place and simplify exact answers as much as possible.

1. Here is a 450-450-900 right triangle, and a 300-600-900 right triangle each with one sided labeled s.
Label the other two sides with the appropriate multiple of s. Then fill in the blanks for the trig
values. NO Calculator!

c. If a right triangle has a 65 angle and the d. If a right triangle has a 22 angle and the
opposite side measures 25 inches, how long is adjacent side measures 5 meters, how long is
the adjacent side? the hypotenuse?
x = 5.4 meters

x = 11.7 inches

e. If a right triangle has a 30 angle and the f. If a right triangle has a 41 angle and the
hypotenuse measures 4 cm, how long is the adjacent side measures 2.5 yards, how long is
opposite side? the opposite side?
x = 2.2 yards
x = 2 cm

8. A surveyor is trying to measure the distance from point A straight across to a pole on the opposite
shore of a river. She walks 100 feet straight down stream and sights across the river to the pole,
estimating the angle between the direction of the pole and her path as 52. What is her result when she
calculates the distance across the lake?

128 ft

9. An airplane is flying at an altitude of 2500 feet and is talking to a person on the ground who estimates
the angle of elevation of the plane as being 23 from the horizontal ground. Using trig, the person on the
ground can calculate how far he is from the plane (in a straight line, labeled x). What is his result?

6398.3 ft
10. Maryam is standing on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building in New York. From her
research, she knows that the 102nd floor is 1250 ft from the ground. Looking out the window she sees
the top of Rockefeller Center, but she cant remember how tall it is. She takes out a protractor and
estimates an angle of depression of 3.27 degrees to the top of Rockefeller Center. She wonders aloud
how far Rockefeller Center is from the Empire State Building and a nearby person comments about
that its about 7000 feet (about 1 miles). Calculate the height of the Rockefeller Center.
