Task 1.

Refer to the attached plans for the Timber Framed Cottage. As per the layout plan below:
there will be a coupled roof structure over the enclosed section of house, with a flat ceiling
internally; and
over the deck will be a non-coupled roof structure with no ceiling.

When completing the following tasks, please note the following:


To assist the builder with complying with WHS legislation regarding falls from heights, the rafter
spacing will be 600mm.
The maximum available length of solid timber members is 6m.
Site location suburban residential allotment in your local region, either non-cyclonic (N2) or
cyclonic (C1).
Use MGP12 for members not exposed to the weather (enclosed by claddings and linings).
Use seasoned F17 for members exposed to the weather (not enclosed by claddings and linings).
The roof structure is supporting Colorbond Custom Orb sheet metal roofing (0.48mm thick) on
metal battens.

a) On the layout plan below, draw the position of all ceiling joists and note the maximum span between
supports. A hanging beam will be required to support the ends of some of the ceiling joists where the
span between supporting walls is greater than 6m draw the position of this hanging beam and note its
span between supports.

b) On the layout plan below, draw the position of all rafters for the whole roof, as well as the
underpurlins to support the coupled roof rafters. Then note the position of the struts supporting the
underpurlins with an X.

Resource Book 1: Plans Book.

Task 1.3
Draw the truss layout for the following L-shaped building, labelling each truss appropriately. Trusses
should be at 600mm centres, and the layout plan is approximately 1:100 scale.

Resource Book 1: Plans Book.
