Honor Society

Award season in Hollywood has just come to a close with the Oscars honoring the
best movies from the previous year. While the architecture community may not have a true award
season, there are a number of awards throughout the year that recognize the best in design. Every
year, the American Institute of Architects Institute Honor Awards showcases the best in archi-
tecture, interior architecture, and regional and urban design. For our cover story this month, Metal
Architecture spoke to some of the winners of the 2011 AIA Institute Honor Awards for Architec-
ture about the role metal played in their winning designs. Turn to page 18 to read the story.
From award winning projects we turn to innovative architectural firms. This month we pro-
file Manuel Oncina Architects, a San Diego-based firm that, since the early 1990s, has established
a niche designing public buildings, with a focus on libraries. Learn more about the firm and why
standing-seam metal roofing is so important to its designs on page 22.
On page 24, youll find our feature on curved framing, Symphony of Steel, which takes a

framing solution by Minneapolis-based Radius Track Corp. Discover how Radius Track designed
and framed these bumps, a series of acoustically specific, multi-radiused bulges in the perform-
ing arts center walls.
In this issue, we also introduce a new column by Thomas Taylor, author of Guide to LEED
2009: Estimating and Preconstruction Strategies. Each month Taylor will provide an in-depth look
at understanding the U.S. Green Building Councils LEED 2009 for New Construction and Major
Renovations. Check out Taylors first column, Education is the Key, on page 9.
While Hollywoods award season may be ending, ours is just starting. Find the entry form
for the 2011 Metal Architecture design awards at www.metalarchitecture.com/contests.aspx.
Entries are due May 6, and we will profile winners in our July issue. I look forward to seeing the
best of the best designs.
