Whydoesadelta/wyetransformermake30degreesphaseshift?
I'vheardthatadelta/deltaorWye/Wyetransformersdonotmakeanyphaseshift.Indelta/wyeorwye/deltatransformers,
Thereisa30degreesphaseshiftbetweentheprimaryandsecondarycoils.So,Whyisthereaphaseshift?andWhyisit30
degrees?..Whynot60or120?
IgoogledandIfoundcalculationswithphasordiagramsthatprovesthe30degreesphasebutI'mconfusedbecauseoftoo
manycalculationsanddiagrams,Ididn'tgetit.
Wouldyougivemeasimpleanswer,please?andIpreferthephysicalmeaningsandconceptsratherthanequationsand
mathematics.
Thankyouverymuch,

Let'scallthe3phasesA,BandCandlet'ssaywenotionallyhaveaneutralwire.
Neutralisbasically0Vinthesystem.
The"A"phasevoltage(toneutral)ismychosenreferencethatallothervoltage
phaseanglesaremeasuredfromhence,VB is120laggingVA andVC is120
degreesleadingVA .
OKsofar?
WhataboutthevoltagebetweenlineAandlineB(akaVAB )thisiscalledline
voltage(nottobemistakenwithvoltagesbetweenphaseandneutral).Line
voltagesare3timesbiggerthanphasevoltages.
OKsofar?

IfyouusetrigonometryandresolveallthetrianglesyoucanfindthelengthofVAB
itis3timesbiggerthaneitherAorBtoneutral.
It'salso30degreesleadingAandthisiswherethe30degreescomesfrom.
Giventhatatransformerdoesn'tinherentlyphaseshiftanything(otherthanthe
trivialcasesof0degreesand180degrees),anysecondarywindingvoltagemustbe
inphasewiththeirrespectiveprimaryvoltagenomatterwhetherthesecondaryis
connecteddeltaorwye.
OKsofar?
Thenyouhaveitbecause,adeltaprimaryworkswithlinevoltagesandtheseare30
degreesshiftedtotheirnearestphasevoltage.Thesecondaryoutputsarealso30
degreesshiftedandhenceawyesecondarywillproduceaphasevoltagethatis30
degreesshiftedfromtheequivalent(butnotdirectlyconnectedto)phasevoltageon
theprimary.
It'strivialtodothewyedeltatransformersoI'llleaveittosomeoneelse.
