Density and Pressure

1. We have to decide which of the following two circus acts will be allowed to perform on
the trampoline. The trampoline can only hold 200 000 N/ m2.

Circus act 1:

A lady with a mass of 60 kg, wears high heels. The area of

one of the heels is 0.00008m2.

Pressure is: .

Circus act 2:

An elephant has a mass of 4000kg. The area of one of the

elephants feet is 0.1m2.

Pressure is: .

Density and Pressure
1. We have to decide which of the following two circus acts will be allowed to perform on the
trampoline. The trampoline can only hold 200 000 N/ m2.

Circus act 1:

A lady with a mass of 60 kg, wears high heels. The area of

one of the heels is 0.00008m2.

Pressure is: 60 x 9.81 = 588.6N.

588.6 / 0.00016 = 3,678,750 N/m2 (2)

Circus act 2:

An elephant has a mass of 4000kg. The area of one of the

elephants feet is 0.1m2.

Pressure is: 4000

x 9.81 = 39240N .
39240/(4x0.1) = 98100 N/m2 (2)

2. If the lady only stands on one leg, what is her pressure on the trampoline?

588.6 / 0.00008 = 7,357,2500 N/m2. (2)

3. If the elephant does a trick where he stands on only one foot, what will his pressure be?

39240/0.1 = 392,400 N/m2 . (2)

4. One of the elephants tricks is to sit on a chair. The circus director wants to make sure the
chair can hold the necessary pressure. If the diameter of the elephants bum is 0.8m, what
pressure must the chair be able to with stand?

area = r2 = x 0.42 = 0.503m2

39240/0.503 = 78065.5 N/m2

5. Explain the relationship between MASS and DENSITY as well as VOLUME and DENSITY.

If volume is kept the same, increased mass increases the density.

..

If mass is kept constant, increasing the volume decreases the density.

6. Calculate the mass of 100m3 of oxygen. The density of oxygen is 1.33kgm-3

1.33 x 100 = 133Kg..

(1)

7. Calculate the mass of 60cm3 of mercury. The density of mercury is 13600kgm-3.

60/1003 = 0.00006 m3 ..

m = x v0.00006 x 13600 = 0.816kg... (1)

8. Calculate the density of ethanol. 100cm3 of ethanol has a mass of 78.9g.

= m/v0.0789kg/0.0001m3 = 789kg/m3..

(1)

9. Calculate the density of gold if 50cm3 has a mass of 96.5g.

= m/v 0.0965/0.00005 = 1930 kg/m3.

(1)

10. What volume would 5kg of air occupy? (the density of air is 1.29 kgm -3)

v = m/ 5/1.29 = 3.88m3..
