Fantasy Island Geography Project

You will be using your mapping and geography skills to create your very own island!
Make sure to follow the directions carefully, and check off each item as you do them.
Final drafts should be your best effort, and therefore, of the highest quality. Coloring
and writing should be neat.

Step One: Land Mass and Water Features

1. Determine coordinates of your island and write them here:
DOUBLE CHECK AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OTHER LAND MASSES
WHERE YOURE PLACING YOUR ISLAND!
2. What body of water is your island located in?
3. What climate zone is your island located in?
4. Draw and label the longitude and latitude coordinates of the island on your
map.

Step Two: Draw your Island

1. Include a compass rose in the top right corner of your map.
2. Label your island with a creative name in the top center of your map.
3. Create a legend or key in the bottom left corner of your map.
4. Place a scale in the bottom right corner of your map.
5. Draw your island! In pencil, draw the outline of your island. Your island
must have all of the following landmasses & bodies of water:
a. Plains
b. Plateaus
c. Mountains
d. Rivers

7. Have at least 3 cities on your island with one being the capital. These cities
should be in different regions that would have distinct characteristics (such
as differences in temperature, rainfall, elevation, climate, vegetation, access
to natural resources, proximity to the ocean, etc).
8. Your island should have elevation clearly marked. Your map must include
elevation like what you would see on a topography map.
9. Your final map should be in color with names and features clearly marked.
Features and locations must be named!

Step Three: Write about it

1. Your island map with include a one-page, double spaced explanation of your
island that addresses the 5 themes of geography and how they are seen on
your island.

ii. Relative location
b. Place

climate, etc.

need to be between 7 to 10 minutes in length and will include showing your
island map to the class.
