CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
July 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members

SUBMITTED BY: Mike Branson, City Forester

APPROVED BY: Chip Rerig, City Administrator

JULY 2017 FORESTER REPORT

Carmel Beach:
Carmel Beach fared fairly well over the Fourth of July holiday. Staff and volunteers cleaned up trash left behind
by holiday beach goers on July 5th. Staff continued weekday cleaning and monitoring of the nine (9) wood fire
pits along the beach.

Trees:
Four (4) new Monterey Cypress trees were planted in the median islands in the vicinity of Ocean Avenue and
Del Mar Avenue. Also, John Leys Tree Service began watering 79 trees that were planted by the Friends of
Carmel Forest over the past year and a half through their centennial and commemorative tree planting
programs.

City contractor, Greenscape, mowed annual grasses and other vegetation in Mission Trail Nature Preserve,
Forest Hill Park, and within the public right-of-way along many streets around resulted from the generous
rainfall received this past winter and spring.

On-call tree service contractors and City staff removed four (4) public trees and 19 stumps.

North Dunes:
In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, biologist Joey Canepa watered new native dune plants, removed
weeds, and counted the population of endangered Tidestroms lupine. Staff is anticipating updating the Council
at the November regular Council meeting.
