INTRODUCTION

Encoders are the electronic equipment which converts one form of input
into another one. Encoders are used to generate a coded output from a single active
numeric input. Encoders are widely used in various devices like Calculators,
Computers, Mobile phones, ATM machines and even also in our regular Television.
IC-74147 provides us facility to convert Decimal form of input into Binary form of
output. As it convert Human friendly numerical into machine friendly language i.e. in
the form of 0s and 1s, hence it is quite important to study about this invention in
very serious manner to understand that how this Decimal to BCD conversion
operation perform.
In our 21st century we get digitalized day by day and decimal to binary
Encoder performs very important role to communicate Human being with Machine.
Therefore I choose seminar topic on Decimal to BCD encoder to get proper
information about encoder and spread it unto last student in S.Y.B.Sc (comp.sci.).

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF DECIMAL TO BCD CONVERSION

USING IC-74147

In above figure we arrange a circuit of Decimal to BCD encoder. There are four OR
gates are arrange in such a manner that they provides a Binary form of output when
we give Decimal form of input. In above circuit we arrange 10 key point which is
connected to the electric supply and provides decimal from of input to the circuit by
passing voltage in a certain wire. Every wire is connected to the OR gate. We know
that output of every OR gate is 1 when at least one input is high.

Working of a circuit:

When we press key 5 then by pressing key the voltage in the key no.5 flows towards
the wire which is connected to the key no.5, as the wire connected to the 2nd and 4th
logical gate then logical gate no.2 and 4 provides output to the forward in the form of
voltage. This working of a circuit perform Decimal to BCD conversion operation.
Which is shown in below truth table.

12 APPLICATION OF DECIMAL TO BCD ENCODER

Fig: Application of Decimal to BCD encoder

(Seven segment display)

As we naturally live in a Decimal world, we need some way of converting these

Decimal numbers into Binary (base-2) environment that computers and digital
electronic devices understand, and binary coded decimal allows us to do that.
In above mentioned figure we see a circuit structure of seven segment display which
is one of the application of Decimal to BCD encoder. In this circuit we press a
decimal numbers which is display on digital electronic device in the form of decimal
number.

HOW IT IS HAPPEN:

When we press decimal numbers then BCD encoder converts it into machine friendly
language i.e. in form of 0 and 1 which later converts into seven segmented output
to the digital screen.

12 LIMITATIONS WITH DECIMAL TO BCD ENCODER

For 10 bits input, there can be 210 possible combinations, out of which only
10 are used using 4 output lines.
The discrepancy of 0 output due to all inputs being 0 or D 0 being 0 is
resolved by using additional input known as enable.
Only one time input can be active at any given time.
