Music Technology

Course Syllabus 2017-2018

Description: This course focuses on the electronic production, manipulation, and organization of music. The
course will focus on using music theory and the piano to make music easier. Major topics will include recording,
sequencing, composing, and performing with computers and related music hardware.

Organization: This is a course in which topics are presented by the instructor and Assignments/projects are
completed by students during class. Objective goals and quizzes are graded daily, and there is a comprehensive
final exam. Music technology students generally have had little to no experience with music technology, although
some may have experience with certain programs. The students will have an opportunity to use the following
software: Finale, Sibelius, and Audacity.

Course Objectives:

1) To educate students with the history and theory of modern electronic music.

2) To introduce students to playing and composing with the piano.

3) To introduce students to available software used in the music industry.

4) To educate students on recording and technique.

5) To educate students on the benefits of open source software.

6) To allow students a creative outlet to make and perform music that appeals to them.

Education:

1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

2. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.

3. Reading and notating music.

4. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.

5. Evaluating music and music performances.

6. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

Course Topics:
1) Computer lab procedure and etiquette

2) Basic Music theory

3) History of computers and music tech

4) History of recording

5) Computer software

6) Recording

7) Composing, Performing, Arranging

Required Supplies:

1) inch BLACK 3 ring binder

2) Notebook paper

3) A pack of pencils

4) a set of Headphones

Grading: Grading will include daily in class assignments, quizzes, larger projects,

semester exams and participation.

In class assignments are tasks that are integral to success in the course and

proficiency of the topic.

Quizzes include both written questions of knowledge or procedure as well as

demonstrating mastery of a topic on the computer.

Projects are what really drives this course and what will probably be most enjoyable for

students. Projects will be larger, multiday assignments often involving creativity and

troubleshooting.

Semester exams will consist of the material covered over the semester.

Participation grades will be daily and will be based on the following question Is the

student actively engaged in the class? Students have an opportunity to learn things that are not

usually taught in high schools, and I want to see that they are taking advantage of that opportunity.

Make-Up Work and Tests: When a Student misses schoolwork including tests because of an authorized
absence, he/she has three (3) days to make arrangements with the teacher to complete the make-up work and/or
tests. The student does not have to complete the work in three (3) days; he/she has only to make arrangements to
complete it. When the arrangements are being made to do the make-up work, the teacher will schedule the time
and date by which the make-up work must be completed. If the make-up work includes a test, the test must be
taken in the students regularly class period. Assignments may be requested from the school guidance office if the
student will be absent for three or more days. The assignment may be picked up the following day.

Classroom Rules:

1) Treat everyone with respect.

2) Stay on task!

3) No food or drink will be allowed during class.

4) No unauthorized use of internet or software during class.

5) Keep your phone away. Ask permission to use your phone if it is class related.
