Definition and Types of Bridge

What is a bridge?
Bridge is a structure built to span a valley,
road, river, body of water, or any other
physical obstacle.

Designs of bridges will vary depending on

the function of the bridge and the nature of
the area where the bridge is to be
constructed.
Types of Bridges
There are six main types of bridges:
1. beam bridges,
2. cantilever bridges,
3. arch bridges,
4. suspension bridges,
5. cable-stayed bridges and
6. truss bridges
Beam Bridge
The beam is one of
the simplest forms of
bridge.

Cantilever Bridge
A cantilever bridge is a bridge built using
cantilevers: structures that project horizontally
into space, supported on only one end.

ARCH Bridge
Arches are used in bridges in different
ways, depending on whether they are
made of steel, brick or stone. The arch
takes (transmits) the load from the deck
of the bridge to the land on both sides.

Cable Stayed Bridge
The cable stayed bridge is newer than the
other types of bridge. Large upright steel

the ground.

Truss Bridge
A truss bridge is a bridge composed of
connected elements (typically straight)
which may be stressed from tension,

are one of the oldest types of modern
