The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fine engineering – always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more than
engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW EfficientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in a number of completely
emission-free BMW  Series saloons. Also going into production soon is the BMW ActiveHybrid – an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of
internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW already includes a multi-award-winning BMW EfficientDynamics technology package
as standard that boosts dynamics even further while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO emissions.

Valvetronic Auto Start/Stop function Optimum Shift Indicator

Petrol engines with Valvetronic have fully
variable valve lift control. This improves
the engine’s responsiveness and running
smoothness while also significantly reducing
fuel consumption.
BMW four-cylinder engines with -speed
manual transmission automatically shut down
when the vehicle is stationary, for example at
a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates
the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine
restarts as soon as the clutch is activated
again. This innovation significantly reduces
fuel consumption especially in city traffic.
Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective
and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where
the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction
with -speed manual transmission comes in.
It shows the driver what gear to use in order to
save fuel.

Common Rail Injection system
The third-generation electronically controlled
Common Rail Injection system generates
pressure of up to , bar. Diesel fuel can be
injected with greater precision and in exactly
calculated amounts. This lowers consumption
and emissions while at the same time enhancing
engine performance.
Disengageable
air conditioning compressor
If the air conditioning is not being used, the air
conditioning compressor in all diesel models is
uncoupled from the belt drive, which prevents
the usual loss of energy.

our research with BMW EfficientDynamics –
in the quest to bring you more driving pleasure
and less emissions.
Brake Energy Regeneration
To supply a battery with electrical energy, the
generator (alternator) is permanently driven
using engine power, which demands additional
fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration
means the generator usually only generates
electricity when the driver takes his foot off the
accelerator or the brake – previously unused
kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode
into electrical energy before being fed into the
battery. In this way, electricity is generated
while coasting, without consuming fuel.

Some BMW EfficientDynamics features are dependent

on the car’s equipment and are not available for all model
variants. Your BMW partner will be happy to provide you
with information on all equipment details.

 Xenon Headlights for high and low beam,

incl. daytime running lights, headlight
washing system, four light rings and taillights
with LED light rods, for significantly better
illumination of the road at night and in poor
weather or light conditions.
 Adaptive Headlights with variable light
distribution, incl. turning lights, only in
conjunction with Xenon Headlights, optimally
illuminate corners as soon as the driver turns
into them through electromechanical control
of the pivoting headlamps.

 Fog lights, integrated in the front apron, for
improved safety in poor visibility. Option includes
heated exterior mirrors and windscreen washer
nozzles.
 High-beam assistant helps the driver at
night by automatically switching between high
and low beam according to oncoming traffic,
vehicles driving in front and when road lighting
is sufficient.
 Rain sensor, incl. automatic driving lights:
Once activated, the rain sensor automatically
turns on the windscreen wipers according to the
intensity of the rain and independently controls
the wiper interval. The integrated automatic
driving lights automatically switch to low beam
at dusk or when entering tunnels.

 Lights package includes vicinity lights in the  Window recess covers in chrome  BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line
door handles, which illuminate the area outside (for X xDrivei and X xDrived). includes the surrounds of the B-pillar, window

Other features include reading lights at the
front and rear, footwell illumination at the front,

to the car’s design, this system forms the basis
of a multifunctional BMW roof support for
effortless and safe transportation of luggage,
bicycles, surfboards etc.

– front bumper, incl. grille slats in the air inlet,
rear bumper and side sills.

 Roof railing Aluminium satinated: For an
individual look, the roof rails are also available in
a flat-profile version in Aluminium satinated
(only in conjunction with X Line).
 Dynamic Braking Lights help vehicles
following behind to see how hard you are applying
the brakes. During normal braking, the brake
lights cover a large area. Only during emergency
braking do the brake lights begin to flash. This
allows following traffic to immediately distinguish
between light braking and full braking – for even
greater driving safety.
 Panorama glass roof with large opening
and viewing area and wind deflector. The
front half of the glass can be electrically
raised by touch control and also has a sliding
function, electric sliding roofliner (sun
protection) as well as a comfort open/close
function with trap release.
 BMW Individual roofliner Anthracite. In
addition, the sunblinds and roof grab handles
are in Black.
 Exterior mirrors, in body colour, both
electrically adjustable and aspheric on the
driver’s side. The mirrors can also be heated.
 Interior and exterior mirrors with automatic
anti-glare function. When a defined incidence
of light is registered from following vehicles, the
mirrors automatically adjust to the anti-glare
position.
 Tow bar with removable ball head (the ball
head can be conveniently stowed away under
the luggage compartment floor). Depending

allows for very fast, precise gearshifts and
maximum dynamic performance (shift paddles

about average speed, average and current fuel
consumption, range and outside temperature.
 Optimum Shift Indicator lets you know
when it is more economical to drive in another
gear. It indicates when to shift up or down and
adapts these recommendations to your driving
style (for models with -speed manual
transmission).
 BMW Assist* supports the driver with various
services: automatic and manual emergency
call,Traffic Info plus*, My Info and a personal
information service.
 BMW Online* allows access to internet-based
services such as e-mail, tailor-made portals for
news, stock market figures and weather reports,
as well as information from the Google Maps
database.

 Auto Start/Stop Display signals on the Info
Display when the engine has been switched off
by the Auto Start/Stop function (for instance, at
traffic lights or in a jam). The display is turned
off when the engine is re-started automatically
(for four-cylinder models in conjunction with
-speed manual transmission).
 Park Distance Control, front and rear,
facilitates parking and manoeuvring in confined
spaces, giving an acoustic signal to indicate the
distance between your car and an obstacle. In
conjunction with an optionally available
navigation system, the distance is also shown
visually in the Control Display.

 Navigation system Business, incl. CD
drive, iDrive Controller with direct menu control
buttons, functional bookmarks, integrated
storage facility for navigation data and high-

parking space is large enough for the vehicle. If
the BMW has a tow bar, the image area is
enlarged. The rear view camera is automatically
activated when reverse gear is engaged (in
conjunction with a navigation system).

 Air conditioning, with microfilter, for a
comfortable interior climate any time of year.
 Automatic air conditioning (shown here),
with Automatic Air Recirculation, microfilter,
fogging and solar sensors, quickly creates the
desired climate and maintains the selected

 CD-changer for six CDs (available in
conjunction with a navigation system or the

 harman/kardon Surround Sound System
with powerful amplifier, equalizer, centre
speaker and  loudspeakers for superb sound.
Surround sound function enables simulation of
various acoustic environments.
 HiFi loudspeaker system with eight
loudspeakers for brilliant sound.
 DVD system in the rear includes a monitor
with -inch colour display integrated into the
centre armrest. The DVD system plays video
DVDs and audio CDs (incl. MP format) and can
also be used to display JPEG images. When the
monitor is not in use it pivots  degrees and
folds down. It also comes with an AV input.
Infrared headphones available from BMW as an
option.

BMW recommends the use of RON  super unleaded petrol. Unleaded RON  and higher with a maximum ethanol content of % (E) may also be used. Output and consumption


All engines comply with the EU emissions standard. Fuel consumption is determined in accordance with the ECE driving cycle (//EC) made up of approximately one-third urban
traffic and two-thirds of extra-urban driving (based on the distance covered). CO emissions are measured in addition to fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is determined for vehicles
with standard equipment. Optional equipment (such as wider tyres) may have a significant impact on fuel consumption.


BMW Recycling.

Your BMW is the product of a comprehensive recycling concept. But what exactly does that mean in
practice? It means that all the requirements of recycling are taken into account from the start, in the
initial development of a BMW. One example is careful material selection designed to preserve
resources and to ensure efficient recycling compatible with the environment. Each BMW is designed
and built for simple and economic recycling after its long-running life. Since , we have been
collecting the know-how required for this purpose at the unique BMW Recycling and Dismantling
Centre (RDC) near Munich. At the same time, the BMW Group is establishing a complete network of
vehicle recycling facilities within Europe, focusing in the process on the high standards of quality and
environmental care that BMW is renowned for. Please contact your BMW partner on all matters
regarding your end-of-life vehicle. They will be happy to help.

The models illustrated in this brochure show the specifications for the German market. In part, they
