DESIGN CONCEPT

Fusion of athletics, heritage conservation, and cultural value, identity, and relevance to
the Filipinos

ATHLETICS
pave way for young people to get into sports
sadly, complex symbolizes the state of Philippine sports as of now
beginning of the careers of Olympic medalists and notable athletes like Hidilyn
Diaz, Lydia de Vega, Elma Muros, and Robert Jaworski.

HERITAGE CONSERVATION
acknowledging its role in the history not only of sports but also in other
monumental events in the country, as well as one of the last surviving art deco
architectures designed by notable architect Juan Arellano.
removing would mean desecrating a huge portion of Philippine sports history

CULTURAL VALUE & IDENTITY

designed for the people
must remain a piece of our patrimony
public space, truly belongs to the people of Manila
sports as a part of our culture; unites Filipinos, even briefly

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Using context to create identity and letting culture guide design
Applicable for the master plan of the complex
Designing for the people!!!
What the users (athletes) want, design the complex master plan according to the
setting or the environment that these users prefer (this is where interviews will
come into play)
What do they prefer in terms of the layout and setup? Cater to their comfort
How do Filipino athletes behave? Their culture/beliefs/superstitions etc?

CULTURAL IDEA/FILIPINO VALUES

flexibility, adaptability, creativity

ISM (for the buildings and facilities)

Futurism + Constructivism

Futurism - dynamic lines, motion and speed; in line with Art Deco
Constructivism - advanced technology + engineering + materials (plastic, glass,
industrial materials)
SPORTS TRAINING FACILITY
Lack of updated and modern facilities solely devoted to the training, development, and welfare of both
amateur and professional athletes.

MAIN PROBLEMS AIMED TO BE SOLVED

The redevelopment of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into a modernized and updated facility that
will cater to the needs of both amateur and professional athletes, without compromising its historical
and cultural significance
The Philippines is behind on the technological advances and facilities focused on the training and
development of athletes. The facilities in current training centers in the country are not up-to-date, and
are not designed to aid in the development of the athletes to their full potential and the utilization of
their talents and skills.
The complex sadly embodies the state of Philippine sports as of now.
Preserving one of the last surviving notable art deco structures in the country + preserving Philippine
sports history.
