Every school district has its own strengths to raise funds for its school bond eiection. What is
required for every fund raising effort is organized leadership that applies tenacious energy to achieve
fund raising goals.
The following is one example of how a community not oniy can meet its fund raising goai but also
exceed it.
The first task is to identify overall leadership for the fund raising campaign effort. There can be two
types of leadership for the campaign. The leadership can be composed of individuals with only
community name recognition as well as dedicated operational ieadership.
The second task is to identify overall financial committee structural needs for the campaign and
obtain leadership to accomplish the various tasks. Exhibit 1 is a sample of such a list. Each item
contributes to the overall effort. The items are not iisted in order of importance. The following are
comments with regard to Exhibit I elements:
Item L
Database for district parent addresses used to not only distribute campaign information but
also to obtain financial contributors
Item 2
Identify methods to communicate with Certificated Staff. There are usually hundreds of
Certificated Staff members who not only want to heip financially but also to help in the other
areas of the campaign. Union leadership can be very effective.
Item 3
The same comment as Item 2 appiies to the Classified Staff members
Item 4
Vendors who do business with the District also see value in heiping the District become
stronger in serving the children of the community. District staff members working on their
own time can heip in this area. See Exhibit 2. Note that contribution goals can be set per
volume of annual business with District.
Item 5
A campaign ID number is needed in order for some contribution to make donations. The
campaign treasury usually obtains this from the state.
Item 6
Every cause needs a name. The overall campaign committee is responsible for this marketing
logo.
Item 8
In order to achieve a goal, a goal needs to be established that is realistic and based on an
identified campaign plan. See Exhibit 4 for a campaign plan and its cost.
Item 9
Overall, fundraising committee campaign leadership should be developed. Leadership should
come from every section of the community. Leadership obtained must be the fype of people
who are enthusiastic and willing to work. Provide everyone with a committee roster,
See Exhibit 5
Item 10
District Administrators strongly support bond campaigns with higher contributions. Identify a
leader and set goals high. Superintendent sets the example for contributions.
Item 11
As in any campaign database of names of Certificated Staff are used to reach all staff
members and record financial supporters.
Item12
See Item 11 (Similar comment for Classified Staffl
Item 13
Leadership must be found for each community section. This breakdown of the financial
outreach effort into the community makes each leader focused and manageable. See Exhibit
6. For discussion on committee leadership.
Item 14
. The overall campaign committee with its consultants helps develop a basic message foi the
community. See Exhibit 7 for an example
Item L5
Every contribution must be recognized. The campaign committee can develop the message
and the treasury can coordinate the sending out of thank you letters immediately after roceipt
of contribution. See Exhibit 8.
Item 16
People need to know where to send the money.
Item 17
People need envelopes to send their contributions. The campaign consultants can coordinate
this effort.
Item 18
This item breaks down the overall fundraising effo( into smaller goals for the various
community sections. See Exhibit 9 and all it components.
C:\hrd-2\pd\KPB\Fundraising
As far as an individual goal, always suggest a higher amount then you feel comfortable in asking.
You will be surprised at the positive response you will get and if not totally successful you will
normally receive more than you thought you could get. District Leadership rnust set the example. If
the Superintendent and Board members contribute a high amount ($1,000 or more) others will follow
the example.
Yes, Fundraising is hard but have fundraising committee members that are people that have humor
and are dedicated to the community. With such people, it will be fun and challenging for everyone on
the team. And you will be successful.
When the bond campaign is done and the voters have spoken, follow through on all pledges and send
out a well done message to all finance committee members. Also send out the final totals of these
efforts. See Exhibit 12.
Hope this example campaign information helps you in your next bond election fund raising efforts.

The School District does a great job educating our children, but the buiidings and facilities our children must
learn in are insufficient to obtain the success in education we all desire. Now, to address our facility issues
throughout the district, the School District Board has placed a $44 million dollar bond measure on the June 3,
1998 ballot to restore, maintain and build these desperately needed facilities. Check the facts for yourseif.

There are approximately 6,350 parent homes with children in the District. Based on the range of fund
raising goals, if we could average just $4.00 to $7.00 per parent home we would reach our goal.
Obviously we need contributions in the $100.00 plus range to create the average.
I recommend that 4 to 5 active parents lead a sub committee to contact and reach this important group
in the help of financing the campaign. With 4 or 5 active parents the district could be covered well.
Also, creative ideas could flow from such a sub committee as well as sharing the load. Additional sub
committee members could be added, however the minimum number of core leaders should be 4 to 5.
The subcommittee will need a data base of parent names and addresses.
i PTA Organizations: The PTA Organizations are allowed to contribute up to 207a of the funds they
raise during ayearto the bond election. All PTA's need to be contacted for contributions. The Bond
Election is not classified as a political campaign thus allowing the contribution to occur.

The schools of the Any City School District have all served our communities and children well for
many years. However, like many schools, they are in need of additional facilities to meet the
educational needs of the students for the 21st Century. In addition to deferred maintenance items and
to further upgrade facilities, over 100 new classrooms need to be added and new multi-purpose-
cafeteria-community rooms as well as new library technology centers need to be built. The new
classrooms will accommodate Reduced District Class size from 29 students per one teacher to 25
students per 1 teacher in grades 4 - 8 and Class Size Reduction of 20 students per 1 teacher in grades K
through 3.
To address these problems, a Bond Election for Classroonts for Kids has been placed on the June 3rd
ballot.
Classrooms for Ki"ds will provide $44 million to pay for these repairs, modernization and new
classrooms. The cost will be about$l.C0perweekforthe average household. Noneof the money will
go to administration costs or expenses and an independent Bond Oversight Committee will monilor
spending.
A coalition of parents, teachers, business owners, and alumni of the schools have joined together to
help raise money for this impofiant campaign. Your help is needed and we ask that you join with other
members ofthe business community and return a donation to the campaign in the enclosed envelope.
The money will be used to send literature to voters asking for their support. Since we need more than
66Vo of the vote to win, it is crucial that we reach as many voters as possible.
Thank you for your interest in the upcoming bond election for the Any City School District. Your
financial support would be greatly appreciated. I will contact you shortly to discuss any questions you
may have.
Sincerely,

Dear Friend:
Thank you so very much for your contribution in an effort to upgrade and modernize our local high
schools. With your help, we are able to inform more of our neighbors about the importance of passing
Measure V on November 5th. Due to the fact that we require more than 66Vo of the vote to win, it is
critical that we reach as many voters as possible.
With less than two months until voters in the Any City School District face Measure V, there is still a
great deal of work to be done. In an attempt to reach the members of our community with a personal
pleas, we have organized phone banks for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights between
now and election day (from 5;30 to 9:00 pm) and we will be going door to doot on weekends starting
in mid-September. If you can give us jut two hours a week for phoning or a few hours one weekend to
canvass your neighborhood, please call Mr. X at (234) 444-4444. Whatever you can do to assist u sin
this endeavor is not only appreciated, but essential if we intend to provide for the future of our schools
and our students.
(This paragraph should be omitted or altered for large donors and corporations. Instead, we have the
option of making a subtle pleas for more money to reach more voters.)
Again, thank you for your help. We look forward to working with you to ensure that our community
wiil continue to be well-served by our local high schools. On to victory!
Sincerely,
