Gallery, a collection of buildings, some big,
some small, that have been created,
transformed, renovated and restored by some
of the worlds biggest architectural firms.

Caruso St John has been in Copenhagen
refurbishing an old warehouse into Kvadrats
new design studio. The space has been
completely stripped back and laid bare in all
its Scandinavian beauty and the architects
have used spruce timber, and spruce timber
only, to erect large partition walls, cubby holes
and sliding doors, to form the main
functionality of the vast space.
Chris Dyson Architects meanwhile have been
working on a project closer to home, literally
and figuratively, as they expand on the old 18th
Century space they have occupied since 2006

Singapore, creates a versatile work
environment for a plethora of people and
businesses. HASSELL were the designers on
board and they have transformed the site into
a multi-functional, optimised working space,
with colour, graphic forms and a tailored edge
set to please the eye.
Finally, Nulty have collaborated with Stanton
Williams Architects on the Harrods Wellness
Clinic, creating a soothing a calming
atmosphere through design and lighting.

SPRUCED UP
British architects Caruso St. John has refurbished a historic warehouse in the
industrial harbour of Copenhagen, using purely spruce throughout a clever
system of sliding doors and floor-to ceiling shelving to house Kvadrat Soft Cells
new, airy design studio.
With four windows on its long side facing the docks, the six meter high space,
spanning two floors is bright and lofty to accommodate the core team from
Kvadrat Soft Cells carrying out their special combination of acoustics research,
design development, prototyping and communications.
The refurbishment expresses an effortless juxtaposition between old and new.
Starting out by stripping layers accumulated over time, Caruso St. Johns team was
left with a shell, a concrete frame of columns and beams, plaster infills. All wires and
pipes from concrete frame and walls were removed and the concrete repaired and
merely covered by a coat of white paint so marks of the casting was still visible in its
surface. The floor was polished to remove glue and dirt from its surface, revealing the
aggregate of the existing concrete, a type of industrial strength terrazzo.
On this base, Caruso St. Johns created the atelier in big sheets of oiled spruce
lumber-board. The sheets divide the space into three parts: entrance foyer, main
atelier and workspace, interconnected with wide sliding panels, so that they can be
used separately day to day, and also opened for bigger and more social events.
A long work surface in the entrance foyer that accommodates the kitchen, and a
custom fitted table in the workspace have lumber-board worktops made in walnut
referencing the original window panelling in the warehouse. To create a pleasant
acoustic environment, Soft Cells panels are used to line walls and to provide a
luminous ceiling for the mezzanine meeting rooms.
In collaboration with Kvadrat Soft Cells, Caruso St. John chose a mismatched
collection of loose furniture, European classics from the 1960s classroom along
with more recent pieces.

Princelet Street

FIT FOR A PRINCE-LET

11 Princelet Street, Spitalfields, has an
interesting history of occupants. Originally
erected by Daniel Bray, citizen and painter of
London in June 1719, it was occupied by a
clergyman in 1724 and later the carpenter
Alexander Christie in 1766. Architect Chris
Dyson purchased the property in 2006.
Using the panelled staircase from the 1720s, the
only element of the original house left intact, as
a backbone and point of inspiration, Dyson
reinvented the building, mixing 18th-century
style with a bold contemporary aesthetic. The
radical restoration involved rebuilding the front
faade, substantial alterations to the interior of
the building, as well as renovation of the existing
workshop in the rear garden into a studio. The
workshop, previously a Bengali cooking school,
was transformed as part of the renovation
works into a space for Dysons growing practice.
For many years it was home to Chris Dysons
architecture practice while the house became
a thriving and fully-occupied home. Chris Dyson
Architects began to outgrow the studio space in
the rear garden. In 2014 permission was
granted to excavate the area below the studio
to create an additional level. Reconfiguring the
workplace into a gallery, one of the main
challenges was to provide sufficient light into
the depths of the space to create a gallery
that is light and airy.
To achieve the desired light in the space an open
void was inserted into the ground floor level,
echoing the shape of the original rooflight. This,
together with the high floor to ceiling space,
large glazed doors facing onto the newly created
courtyard and a palette of light materials, has
created a dramatic, light-filled gallery space.
In order to celebrate the original structure, key
elements have been retained, thus enhancing
the aesthetic interest of the new space. The
concrete ceiling was cast on timber boards,
resulting in a dramatically textured ceiling,
providing a strong visual reference to the old
timber boards of the studio. Bright white
terrazzo flooring helps bounce light around the
space while rough metal stairs and balustrading
to the stair and void create a dialogue between
these contrasting textures.

The circulation routes between the working spaces also become
hubs for activity, conversation and chance encounters.
HASSELL Principal Paul Semple commented that the design for
Robinson Road Responds to the original Working Capitol and speaks
to all the things that people love about the brand and what it stands for.
This has helped to shape the design concept weve given a tailored
edge to the raw Playful graphic forms and colours are fundamental
to the design, creating a polished and urban experience that will
set The Working Capitol apart from the crowd.
The new co-working space sits lightly within the concrete shell of the
building, covering (but not concealing) the existing structure like a
second skin. Features include exposed walls, employing plywood
features and installing rubber floors across the building.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Harrods department store has launched The Wellness Clinic, offering
an integrated approach to wellness and beauty. Light is an essential
ingredient in this world-class wellness destination, and Nulty worked
with architects Stanton Williams to design a lighting scheme,
which creates a sophisticated, calm interior.
Throughout the clinic, light accentuates the architectural details to
give a distinct feel, while a suggestion of daylight is achieved through
a colour temperature of 5,500K and mediums, such as artificial light
wells, light panels and window effects.
Vertical bars of diffused light provide illumination and contribute
to the gentle, calm feel. The clean lines also add visual interest and
create a sophisticated environment, while reducing the need for any
unflattering interventions in the ceilings.
A large illuminated ceiling coffer in the reception area adds brightness
and emphasises the volume of the space. Backlit retail display niches
give the appearance of natural light flooding in, washing the Moleanos
stonework and bringing out its reflective quality. The sculptural vaulted
ceiling within the generous main waiting area at the centre of the Clinic
is softly expressed by means of light troughs cast into the walls, which
rhythmically echo the curves of the ceiling. Treatment rooms are
grouped in distinct bays around timber-lined rotundas.
Commenting on the success of the project, Andy Garton, Associate,
Stanton Williams Architects said: As the Clinic is in the heart of the
store, with no natural light, it was important to bring a sense of
daylight into the spaces for atmosphere and mood. We worked very
closely with lighting designers, Nulty, to develop the design and
achieve a distinct lighting atmosphere for the Clinic, which adds to the
restful, intimate environment we aimed to create.

A recent study by the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in
the US has shown that green certified buildings can actually make
their occupants brainier. The study revealed that people working in
green buildings think better in the office and sleep better when they
get home; better ventilation, lighting and heat control improves
workers performance and boosts their productivity.
BRITA Vivreau works closely with architects on projects with an
environmental focus, to bring sustainable drinking water solutions
into the design stage. BRITA Vivreaus LinkLine system is a method
of networking the water supply in a large buildings. The system
continuously re-circulates water around the pipes to ensure that
freshness is guaranteed. The LinkLine system also boasts a Control
Management System (CMS), designed to monitor the performance of
the LinkLine Master Control Unit (MCU) using Internet of Things
technology. The CMS is an essential tool to ensure optimum
performance of the system particularly as each MCU controls
multiple drinking water dispense points in one building.
Compared with individual units, LinkLine is up to 62 per cent more
energy efficient and up to 45 per cent more cost effective. The
system also offers cost savings of up to 82 per cent on Co2 cylinders.
LinkLine works with BRITA Vivreaus ViTaps, which dispense mains-
fed purified chilled still, sparkling and instant boiling hot water from
one single tap with a touch sensor control and zero splash.
Incorporating high performance ice bank refrigeration, the ViTap can
deliver high quantities of chilled water per hour. The high spec boiler
heats water to 97 degrees, the perfect temperature for tea! There is
even an intelligent safety feature on the ViTap, which prevents
boiling water from being dispensed by accident.
The LinkLine and ViTap systems are environmentally superior as

IN NYC
New York Citys newest boutique luxury
hotel makes a bold statement in upper
midtown Manhattan, thanks to the
extensive use of Crittall steel windows,
doors and internal screens and
partitions. The Whitby is the second in
New York opened by Firmdale Hotels and
is described as a celebration of
contemporary art and design. Its location
informed the specific choice of glazing.
The Whitbys position called for high
acoustic attenuation and so Crittall
MW40 fenestration was selected. These
windows can accept up to 30mm thick
glazing providing excellent acoustics as
well as thermal performance.
All The Whitbys guest rooms have floor
to ceiling windows as a principal feature.
The ground floor meanwhile also
features interior screens and lobby doors
by Crittall employing a single-glazed
W20 profile. These are especially
versatile for use in association with door
hardware, closers, card entry equipment

OLD MOVIE CHARM

Following a 37 million re-development, Oldham Town
Hall has been transformed into a major cinema and
leisure complex, complete with its rich architectural
heritage. A major element was to replace over 2,000 of
the original ceramic wall tiles in the centrepiece
Egyptian Room and anti rooms. The project comprised
over 55 different formats and designs, which all
required precise matching to the surviving Pilkington
originals. For most of the designs, new moulds needed
to be made as many of the tiles are unique sizes and
embossed with a variety of decorative features. Striking,
tile-clad pillars dominate the room, for which Jackfield
produced three variations of the embossed, yellow leaf
design to cater for the tapered dimensions. The
preservation of the Grade II listed buildings heritage is
testimony to the innovative and meticulous restoration
approach adopted by Craven Dunnill Jackfield.

MINI MANHATTAN
Hueck, one of Europes largest manufacturers and suppliers of
aluminium window, door and faade solutions, specialising in
both standard systems as well as bespoke applications has
supplied its products for a ground-breaking project, which has
been dubbed East Londons Mini Manhattan. London City
Island, a development in Canning Town, combines commercial
and residential buildings and, within a few years, will also be
home to the English National Ballet and the London Film School.
The 12-acre island has buildings designed by Glen Howells
Architects, with construction by Ballymore Developments. Work
is rapidly progressing on the construction of the brightly
coloured residential properties, which are modelled after the
colourful apartment blocks typical of Manhattan or Chicago.
Hueck UK has supplied its profile for most of the windows and
doors installed in the 1,700 apartments. Most of the units
making up the residential towers were prefabricated in a factory
in Holland and shipped to the UK, allowing quicker and more

Over 700m2 of marble tiling with approximately two miles of brass

removed from the lobby and reception area, as well as lifts and

track option before Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 was used to

was also applied. Mapeis Mapetex anti-fracture membrane was

from cracking. Mapetex is a special non-woven fabric designed to

Glynde Place in East Sussex has been crowned the winner of the 2017
Historic Houses Association (HHA) Restoration Award, sponsored by
Sothebys. The Restoration Award recognises and celebrates the work
being undertaken by Members of the HHA throughout the United
Kingdom. These projects reflect the dedication of owners to the care
and sympathetic restoration of the incredible buildings that they own,
inhabit and share with the public. Owned by the same family since it
was built in 1569, Grade I listed Glynde Place is today the family home
of Francis and Caroline Brand (Lord and Lady Hampden) and their
three children. A specialist team created a new entrance hall, with a
Great Door that sits behind the original medieval oak door, which
was repaired and retained. Two unstable curved window bays, were
rebuilt, structural repairs were undertaken and damaged Elizabethan
stained glass was sent to a specialist conservator. Additionally, the

SCHOOL BUILDING
Nash Partnership has been appointed by Kersfield to provide architecture
services for the heritage element of the proposed regeneration of Redland
High School in Bristol. The plans propose a new residential development to
provide 43 new homes by adapting and restoring the existing buildings along
with a small element of new build development. Working in collaboration with
AWW, who are providing masterplanning and architecture for the north of the
site, the team at Nash Partnership brings extensive heritage expertise to
ensure the sensitive conversion and adaption of the main house, pavilions and
associated buildings. This includes the restoration of Redland Court, a Grade
II* listed mansion house, which will be sensitively sub-divided to form four
new dwellings. Plans for the main house include the removal of a number of
20th century interventions to improve the legibility of the original features of
the house and will include the reinstatement of the missing cupula to the east
pavilion. In addition to restoring and converting Redland Court itself, it is
proposed that the existing 1960s sports hall and east wing will be removed.

SHED LIVING
An innovative project to help combat Londons housing crisis has
been unveiled from Lowe Guardians and Studio Bark architects.
Modular SHEDs, which are manufactured offsite and can be installed
in the space of a day, allow for self-contained living within vacant
buildings. The SHED Project makes use of environmentally sound
SMARTPLY OSB panels to create individual U-Build modules, which
are insulated and soundproof and can provide a unique living space
for the growing property guardians market. The modules are
designed to reduce the impact property guardians have on vacant
buildings by providing an easy-to-install private living solution and
reducing waste when these short-term tenants move on to new sites.
The OSB panels are manufactured in a fully sustainable way from
FSC certified forests and are CNCd (Computer Numeric Cutting) to
