The first month of 3rd grade has flown by!

It has been wonderful getting to know your child as we settle into a routine for
room 202. You can anticipate bi-weekly newsletters on the website from this point on. Be sure to subscribe to our
newsletter so you never miss an update!
Language Arts/Reading:
Last week we read a wonderful story about volunteering. Students practiced understanding the characters better as we discussed the
motivations, feelings and traits of the main characters in Destinys Gift. This week we will be learning about the importance of working together
as we explore the book Pops Bridge. Students will be working on their comparing and contrasting skills as they learn more about the Golden Gate
Bridge and various other bridges around the world.

In Grammar, we have been learning about different types of sentences as well as what makes up a complete sentence. Students have
been hard at work identify the subject and predicate of the sentence. Last week we focused on coordinating conjunctions and how to complete
two thoughts into a compound sentence. This week we will continue our exploration of the parts of a sentence.

In Writing, we are gearing up to write our first personal narrative. Students have been working on using descriptive language to describe
their favorite place to someone. Students will be finishing up those paragraphs this week before we explore how to write dialogue. After we
write our own dialogue pieces students will begin to brainstorm what personal story they would like to write about!
Math
We are getting into some new topics in Math after doing a quick review of 2nd grade topics. Students have begun learning about
multiplication through equal group number stories and division through equal sharing number stories. We solved examples of each as a whole
group before students tried their hands at making their own number stories. This week we will be reviewing different ways to measure things as
well as practicing elapsed time problems with some bigger time hops! We have officially started to use Front Row. Front Row is a wonderful app
that individualizes learning for our students. Students are welcome to use Front Row at home by using our class code:645b3m.
Religion
This months virtue is Faith. Last week students explored what Faith means and watched a video about St. Jerome. Students then wrote a
paragraph about how St. Jerome showed the virtue of Faith and how they will show Faith in their lives. We will be exploring how God shows
forgiveness and mercy this week!
Science
In Science, students are becoming life cycle experts. Students are learning about different animals life cycles and preparing a
presentation for the class! Students have begun our butterfly observation journal. We will be observing caterpillars daily in class to learn more
about their life cycle. As we finish up our lesson about what animals need and how they grow we will begin to explore different types of
ecosystems!
