World Corruption

Corruption is defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary as a form of dishonest and illegal beh
avior especially by powerful people. The word corruption alone is too broad to discuss so let us brea
k down to the most common type, the Political Corruption. It refers to the act practiced by the gover
nment officials by taking advantage of their power for personal gain. Political Corruption can come
in different forms. It can be through bribery, graft, or embezzlement. Even though corruption has be
en a widespread issue in the Philippines, we are not alone in facing this challenge.

Political Corruption can be considered as one of the most incurable diseases worldwide. It has
been a problem for too long and not a single country has solved this 100 percent. Because of this, po
verty rates have gone higher and higher as the year passes by. Around the world, whether in the gov
ernment or private companies, surely corruption exists. Many officials omits this kind of unreasonab
le practice out of greed. Our world today has imposed a very materialistic era of people. Having ton
s of money has become the basis of everything. Money equals to everything. They take advantage o
f the power that was vested upon them by the masses not even thinking what the effects of their acti
ons might be.

It is ironic to think, but poor countries are more corrupt than the rich ones. If you were to think t
his logically, a poor country would have little amount of funds compared to the rich ones, but they a
re more corrupt. But that doesn't mean that rich countries are free from corruption. My readings has
led me to the issue of the Prime Minister of Italy from 2001-2011, Mr. Silvio Berlusconi and some o
f his associates were held on trial for various crimes and corruption cases like illegal financing of po
litical parties. Another one is from United Kingdom, where BAE Industries, a well know metal man
ufacturer, bribed the Prince Banda of Saudi an airliner worth 150 million US dollars back then on 20
07 due to national interest. You see, no country is free from this hideous acts.

As far as we all know, no country can be really free from this kind of problems until we all stand
up for what is right even though we have to face the most powerful person in our country. If we wil
l continue to act like blind and mute in every wrong doings that we will see, we can be considered a
s one of them, a corrupt. Because we let them continue their wrong practice. Because we didn't do a
nything to make a slight difference to change it. There is a fine line between being involved and not
making a difference out of a situation. We have to stand together if we want to make a big impact in
this nation. We should act now. For the sake of our country and future generations. And for everyo
ne who has fought to end this even before us.
