IVPB MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

IVPB Medication Administration via CAPPED Line

1. Flush Bag Set-Up (stage set-up for administration of next dose IVPB)
a. Primary / secondary infusion set-up using NS flush bag as primary solution
b. Use an empty IVPB bag to represent previously administered medication (connect secondary
tubing above back check valve on primary tubing)

2. Gather Supplies
a. IVPB with ordered medication
b. 1 NS flush
c. Alcohol swab

3. Aseptically, flush/aspirate IV catheter to verify patency

4. Ensure roller clamp on secondary tubing is open

5. Lower empty IVPB bag below primary bag and back prime primary IV solution into IVPB bag until line
is cleared of mediation from previous infusion

6. Clamp secondary tubing

7. Remove old IVPB and hang ordered IVPB medication

8. Aseptically connect primary IV tubing to catheter site

9. Fully open roller clamp on secondary tubing

10. Regulate IVPB infusion using roller clamp on primary tubing

11. After IVPB has completely infused, allow primary solution (NS flush bag) to infuse until line is fully
cleared of all medication (primary bag will automatically begin infusing after IVPB has emptied)

12. Close roller clamp on primary tubing

13. Disconnect patient from IV set-up (aseptically cap end of primary tubing after disconnecting from pt)
IVPB Medication Administration via COMPATIBLE Mainline Infusion

1. Set-Up (stage set-up for administration of next dose IVPB)

a. Primary / secondary infusion set-up using an empty IVPB bag to represent previously
administered medication (connect secondary tubing above back check valve on primary
tubing)
b. Connect primary solution to IV catheter
c. Open roller clamp to infuse primary solution at KVO rate

2. Verify IVPB medication is compatible with primary solution

3. Gather Supplies: IVPB with ordered medication

4. Ensure roller clamp on secondary tubing is open

5. Lower empty IVPB bag below primary bag and back prime primary IV solution into IVPB bag until line
is cleared of mediation from previous infusion

6. Clamp secondary tubing

7. Remove old IVPB bag and hang ordered IVPB medication

8. Fully open roller clamp on secondary tubing

9. Regulate IVPB infusion using roller clamp on primary tubing

*Primary solution will automatically begin infusing after IVPB bag has emptied

IVPB Medication Administration via an INCOMPATIBLE Mainline Infusion

DO NOT INFUSE AN IVPB THRU AN INCOMPATIBLE MAINLINE INFUSION

If no other immediate IV access is available (existing or start new line), follow the steps below:
o Disconnect incompatible mainline infusion
o Using a new primary/secondary flush bag set-up, administer IVPB as IVPB via a capped line
o Following IVPB infusion/flush, disconnect from patient and re-connect mainline infusion

4. Flush IV catheter at same ROA as medication to fully clear line of all medication

5. When line is cleared, complete flush at steady rate
