Worldwide 3D printers are used to manufacture a variety of medical devices, including those with
complex geometry or features that match a patients unique anatomy. Some devices are printed
from a standard design to make multiple identical copies of the same device. Other devices, called
patient-matched or patient-specific devices, are created from a specific patients imaging data.
Commercially available 3D printed medical devices include Instrumentation (e.g., guides to assist
with proper surgical placement of a device), Implants (e.g., cranial plates or hip joints), and External
prostheses (e.g., hands).
Although 3D printing is finding great application in medicine throughout the developed world, yet
Indian medical community is reluctant in wholeheartedly accepting it, with nearly every use of 3D
printing in Indian hospitals making to newspaper headlines. Due to huge engineering workforce and
poor doctor to patient ratio, 3D printing can have a very significant impact on healthcare in India.
The program targets to expose medical community in the region to the various applications and
advantages of 3D printing. The program will also guide them in adapting this technology by
informing them about the various softwares, hardware and design aspects related to 3D printing.
The event will highlight the services that PEC University of Technology, Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge
Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital and Redington 3D can provide them for optimal use of 3D
printers.
Role of PEC (Design Expertise) and Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences &
Hospital (Medical Expertise)
PEC University established a Centre of Excellence in Industrial and Product Design in 2013. A major
portion of the projects undertaken by CoE related to healthcare. CoE has an experienced design
team that has undertaken various projects with PGIMER, Chandigarh and Panjab University for
surgery planning and product development. CoE is in process of filing 4 patents related to healthcare
products. The department has specialized image processing and design software for designing of
medical equipment. CoE also has manufacturing capabilities with two state of the art 3D printers
capable of printing in FDA approved materials.
Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital was established in April, 2006. The
Institute aims at providing excellent oral health care facilities to the general public in addition to
undergraduate training to students. It has the ability to generate ample research avenues in dental /
medical sciences which can have a far reaching impact on not only oral but general health with
special thrust on community healthcare. The institute has collaborated in many projects with CoE
over the last one year.
Redington 3D is a major product distributor and seller in 3D printing and scanning. They have
manufacturing capabilities for 3D printing of parts in a variety of materials including medical grade,
FDA approved, biocompatible material. Redington 3D is an authorized partner of 3D Systems and a
business partner of Zeiss. Through this event Redington 3D intends to:
Inform doctors about the equipment they will need if they want to set up a lab in their
organization.
Helping them in selection of correct equipment for them.
Offer manufacturing services.
