Sharing is caring and on the internet that means links or hyperlinks. A good netizen always shares with others what they like
and their links enhance navigation for users and search engines. Links are also like a vote of confidence for the content being
linked toolike a referral.

SCN encourages it's users to create legitimate links when creating content:
Link to other SCN content such as people, blog posts, discussions and documents
Link to other SAP sites, such as help.sap.com
to other websites

To help you get started, here are some tips and best practices for adding links.

When and What to Link

Links aren't just a shortcut to another webpages but also a shortcut when writing: if the subject you're writing about can be
supported by a source or there's a webpage with more information, link to it.

Another good reason to link it to give a shout out when you refer to someone instead of just writing their name. The people you're
linking too will see the link and feel more appreciated.

Best Practices for Creating Links - Click here!

Always link descriptive text. Linking a generic terms or command reduces the value and usability of the link because the
context of the link get's lost in the text appearing before or after the linked text. Linked text is formatted differently so that it
stands out from the text and therefore there's no need to go into much detail or invite users to click: just highlight the appropriate
text and hyperlink it.

Inserting a Table of Contents

If you have a long document, user a linked table of content to helps readers navigate through content quickly (I've used one on
this document). This also generates custom URLs that go straight to the specified part of the document!
1. Format your headers with header styles 1-6

2. Insert the table of contents by clicking Insert (double blue chevrons) and then selecting Table of Contents

Insert only appears on the advanced editor

3. In edit mode, you will only see a place holder for the TOC: after you publish or save to draft will you see the TOC with all the
links.

TOC appears after publishing or saving to draft:

Inserting Links with the SCN Text Editor
The SCN text editor contains an advanced linking tool that makes linking easy and, dare I say, fun.

@Mention
In a hurry? From anywhere in the text area, just type @ to mention people, content and places your talking about.
1. Type @
2. Choose from the results or continue typing to search for people, content and places
User underscore (_) instead of a space between search terms, e.g. "jason_lax"

Link Express: Auto Title

This is probably my favorite way to link to SCN content and people, and it also works with off site content (non-SCN)! Just drop
the URL into place and use the pop-up menu to swap in the link text.
1. Copy and paste the URL into the text area
2. Click the link to open the link pop-up menu

3. Click A
4. Click T to convert the URL to the title of the content
(Click image to see animated demo)

The same pop-up menu can be used to unlink the text or change the linked text to the bare URL

Insert Link Button on the Text Editor Toolbar

Web Address
1. In the text area, select the text to be linked
2. Click insert link icon on toolbar

3. Enter the URL into the URL field

4. Click Insert

(Search) All Content

Search from SCN content. With this method you can either assign a link to selected text or insert hyperlinked text automatically
based on the title of the link target.
1. In the text area, either select the text to be linked or the position where to insert the link
2. Click insert link icon on toolbar

3. Click All Content

4. Search for the content or person you want to link too
For best results, select only the content types needed in what to search (click Select None to reset) and use additional filters

5. Select the result

6. Click Insert

Browse History
Select a link from the last 5 content items, spaces or people profiles visited. With this method you can either assign a link to
selected text or insert hyperlinked text automatically based on the title of the link target.
1. In the text area, either select the text to be linked or the position where to insert the link
2. Click insert link icon on toolbar

3. Click Browse History

4. Select an item
5. Click Insert

Open Links in a New Window

The default behavior for all links is for them to open in the same window. Here's how to modify a hyperlink so that it opens in a
new window or tab.
1. Insert a hyperlink using one of the methods described above
2. Toggle to HTML mode

3. Override the link's class with class="jive-link-custom"

e.g. <a class="jive-link-custom" href="http://www.google.com" target="_blank">Google</a>
4. Add the target target="_blank", which commands the link to open in a new window
e.g. <a class="jive-link-custom" href="http://www.google.com"target="_blank">Google</a>
5. Save you content

Specifying Username/Password in a URL

Here's how to avoid errors when sharing a URL that specifies as username and password.

Link: username:password@www.mysite.com:1234?repo=abc def ghi

1. Paste the link as text only without the http:// at the beginning

2. Highlight the text and then click Insert Link

3. Paste the entire URL, beginning with http://

Results are per above, to the sample URL. You can check the HTML of this page for confirmation.

If things get complicated, you can share a screenshot of the URL (like I did above) or user a ling shortening service such as
bit.ly to share it.

Links within a Document or Blog Post (Anchors)

Sometimes you want to link within a document, such as this link going to the bottom of this page. This can be achieved via the
HTML editor using the name attribute.

In this example, the anchor is named "bottom" and the first line linked to where the second appears in the document:
<a href="#download">Go to bottom</a>
<a name="bottom">Bottom of Page</a>

Troubleshooting: Display a URL Without it Becoming a Link

There are cases where you want to share a URL without it linking. Unfortunately the including of http:// or an ampersand (@) in
your text string will always cause the SCN text editor to convert the string into a link. Here's how to display the text
string without it getting hyperlinked.
Show a screenshot of the text string
o Take a screenshot of the text and then insert it into your text with Insert Image (camera icon on text editor toolbar)
Use the Syntax Highlighing: this tool allows users to share code without the platform acting on it.
o Click Insert

o Choose Syntax Highlighting > Plain

o Past the text string into the field (text box) provided

Example:

1. username:password@www.mysite.com:1234?repo=abc

Bottom of the Page

I would rather like to supress auto link of an URL and only want to show it as text, because it contains some varying
parts like http://myuser@exampleserver.com...SCN makes an URL out of this whioch is nonesense.

How do I achive this ?

Any annotation available ?

Thanks and regards,

Joerg

I really like to see this URL and it might be hard to shared online until we figure out how to do it. Can you
eMail it to me? (I'm in the company's address book.)
Meanwhile, on the text editor you can insert HTML and Quotes: just click the double chevrons on the lower
right of the text editor's toolbar to select on of the options.

Auto-title is key! Nice demo, by the way. I use this a lot for spaces:

For example, the link to this space:

http://scn.sap.com/community/moderators-and-editors

Becomes:
SCN Moderators and Space Editors

Editors should use this as much as possible. Keep in mind that the link text can still be edited after auto-titling.

Hi Jason,
Thank you for this. Quick question: there seems to be an issue with the table as the first bullet is empty. Anyone else
had this issue?
Thanks

Hi David,

I don't quite follow you question so perhaps you can elaborate in a new discussion inSCN Support?

Hi Jason,
Thanks for the response. I will ask this in support as suggested but the question was related to the
empty bullet point in your table of content (top of page)

Wow: something wrong with the nesting! What browser are you using because it's fine
in Chrome.

I see what you see with IE. This must be the result of the recent upgrade
whereas if there is no header one, it artificially adds one. This means you
must start with header 1

Hi Jason,
You are right, it is a browser issue (that will teach me to use IE).
Thank you for the tip

Very useful blog Jason, I didn't understand how you added table of contents. When I am trying to create a table of
contents its creating image similar to a page but didn't find how to proceed further.

you cannot do it from the communication stream, you need to open the discussion in an extra window. Then
you click reply and on top right of the reply window you have to click "use advanced editor"

and it will change and make this function available

I am not trying to include table of contents on the communication stream but in a new blog. I want
to get this (this is what table of contents means right),

But when I am clicking on table of contents I am getting this ,

Don't know what is next.

you are almost there.
you have to Format your headers with header styles 2-6 prior to this command
This makes mainly sense in documents and blogs where you have headlines above
certain sections
Once you added this table of content you only need to save (or publish) and you get the
headlines listed at that place where you inserted this table of content
