INTRODUCTION

The North-Eastern region of India, being prone to many types of natural calamities, uses
building construction techniques which prove to be resilient to disasters. One of the most
common types of traditional housing practices found in this part of the country is the Assam-
type housing, predominantly witnessed in the state of Assam. This type of construction uses
lightweight materials such as bamboo, ikra (a locally available reed), wood etc. which prove to
be extremely effective against earthquake events.

These construction techniques were based on several factors ranging from socio-
cultural, economic to physical factors, whereas today, housing forms are based on a different
set of ideas/factors such as world view, rationalization and fashion. In past, people were more
concerned about integrated orientations, were highly responsive to site, climate, topography
for physical comfort and peaceful microclimate within the house.

OBJECTIVES-
To study the construction techniques in Assam
Evolution of the various types of civilizations in architectural context.
To study about the sustainable behaviour of the locally available materials.
To study the evolution of the material use from the ancient times to the modern times
and emergence with the both.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY-

This dissertation will discuss different sustainable materials and housing typologies of
Assam. The paper will try to find out problems and prospect of housing and to what extent
this vernacular technique can be blended with modern techniques is the key focus of the
study.
People should come to know the pattern of vernacular architecture in the region with regards
to the climatic zone and its geographic location.
All necessary materials which are used in the region are described along with the housing
styles along with their case studies.

LIMITATIONS-
The dissertation will exclude all structural behaviours and calculations of different architectural
patterns.

METHODOLOGY-
Background study of the region.
Literature study of the sprawl of the civilizations from the Brahmaputra Valley.
Observations from case studies to be done over the internet.
Analysis from the collected data.
Conclusion.
