Introduction

Dried chilies are used widely in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India and also in other countries
as well. Dried chilies are mainly used in Malaysia for making chili paste for sambal making.
Sambal is sauce typically made from a variety of chili peppers and secondary ingredients such as shrimp
paste, fish, sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar or other vinegars. Not
only that, dried chili are also used in various cooking especially along with chicken and seafoods.

Mostly, dried chili seed are removed before making chili paste or sauce, since the seeds can
influence the taste of the paste or sauce. Not only influencing the taste, chili seed are also related to
health problem, since it can cause intestine related diseases and so on.

Household appliances do not have any seed separating machine. For the seperating, people
normally boil the chillies and remove the seeds or they will use scissors and cut the dry chillies and
remove the seeds. This method will take up a lot of time to remove the seeds. Not only that, some are
willing to pay +/-RM1.00/KG to manually remove the seeds through labour which is quite expensive.

Based on my survey, there are some machine in the market that is being used to remove seeds
from dried chili, but those machine are high in volume which is not practical for household usage and is
very expensive and big.
Problem statement

Dry chilies is widely used in our country because of the high demand. It is widely used in food to
make sauce, paste and flavoring. Some chilies used are fresh chilies and dry chilies. The demand for dry
chilies is quite high because it must be dried first before made into a paste or flavoring in food.

There is a problem faced by the people when using dry chilies .This happen when separating the
chili from its seed. They will usually remove the seed by cutting it into a small pieces using scissors and
remove by using hands .The other method they will usually use is by soaking it into a hot water and let
the seed to fall down .This can take a lot of time and require man power to remove the seed because it
can cause an allergic or appendix to consumers. According to the study made by www.instah.com, there
are two allergic reactions caused by chili and chili seed, Gastrointestinal Problems and Rashes.
Gastrointestinal symptoms might occur due to consumption of chili pepper or exposure to it. Due to it a
person might have a feeling of nausea or vomiting. In worst cases one might get diarrhea too. Not only
that, chili seed also can cause rashes. Mild to severe rashes which also itch might arise due to this allergy
around mouth in most cases or whole body. Dermatitis or rash might also occur on point of touch with
the pepper. Remember not to scratch other parts of the body as it could spread too.

Stomach pain could also occur which could be either light or in rare cases severe. This will
involve a high cost due to the man power. Sometimes when removing the seed from chili, it also can
lead to skin and eye irritation. Eventhough there is a machine to remove the chili but it is bigger in size
and expensive.

The main problem is happened when separating a chilies and its seed. There is a lot of problem
and subsequences faced by household users .To solve this problem, we had discussed and modify the
current chilies seed separator which is large and used in large industry into a small chili seed separator
which is suitable for household purpose.

4.2.1 Criteria of Design /Pugh Method

Once product planning is complete, a more complete specification has to be prepared. The product
(chili seed separator) requirements or technical characteristics and the product specification serve
as the basis for developing product concepts. Product benchmarking, brainstorming, and research
and development are sources for new product concepts. Once concepts are developed, they are
analyzed and evaluated. Cost studies and trade studies are performed. The concept selection matrix
can be used to help with this evaluation process. The concept selection matrix shown below lists
the product requirements or technical characteristics down the left side of the matrix (Table 4.2).

IDEA DESCRIPTION
4.3 Description of final design or solution

At the end of the research , the most suitable design for the dry chillie seed seperator based
on the concept matrix in Table 4.3 is design 3 which consist of a tumbler and a box shape body.

4.2 Advantage

Less Vibration
Safe to use
Compact shape
Speed can be controlled
Reasonable Cost
Easy to disamble
Can also be used as blender

4.3 Application

The chosen design 3 which will work as a chillie separating machine. This can be
done because the chillie will be cut by the blade and the seeds will drop through the holes
of the tumbler. Not only that, when the tumbler and shaft s removed the machine can be
used as a blender.
4.3 Product cost and maintenance

When comparing design 3 with the other design ideas. It is proven that design 3 is
much more cost effective. This is because the parts are less complicated which means it
costs less compared to the vibration motor. Design 3 is also very easy to maintain by the
user itself, this is because the parts are made to be easily disambled.

4.3 Ergonomic Factor

Design 3 is much more ergonomic compared to design 1 which uses a vibration

motor. This is because vibration can cause muscle soreness to increase. In conclusion, it is
proven that design 3 is much more better in many aspects compared to all the other designs.

ACTUAL
CONCLUSION

There is a problem faced by household users when separating dry chillie seeds.Their main problem
is that the chillie seeds causes allergic raction when removing using bare hands and it also
consumes too much time to remove these chillie seeds. Eventhough there is a chillie separating
machine in the market, but that is used for conventional purposes and is not practical for household
usage.

To solve this problem, we had discussed and modify the current chilies seed separator
which is large and used in large industry into a small chili seed separator which is suitable for
household purposes.

We hope that our design will be able to solve the problems faced by household users. We
designed a machine with a smaller scale for household usage and application and separate dry
chilli seeds much faster and efficient, comparable to manual method, where they use scissors and
sieve to separate seeds. While some people send their dry chilies to labours to separate the seeds.
We are also considering new designs in order to improve the output and the efficiency of the
machine for the better purpose and usage.
