<'o-Pa, Kirghiz, and Tangut armies. These peoples are the forerunners of the Turko-
Mongol groups such as the Khitan, Jurchen, and Mongols. They are first recorded as
mercenaries of the Chinese circa A.D. 50. This list is divided into an early (E) period
(A.D. 50 to 600), middle (M) period (A.D. 601 to 900), and late (L) period (A.D. 901 to
1200). Minimums marked * apply if any camels are used, ** if any Ghei are used. Minor

fM5ts of Constantine the Great (Constantine's Army should be created from list 77).
The Vexillium PA Std must be used if the emperor commands and must be carried by the
Equites Singulares Augusti; the troops marked * are then mandatory. If elements of more
than one legion are present or if the number of legionarii exceeds 88, the
commander must be a provincial legate. If a standard is used it must be a PA and it should
be carried by auxiliary equites singulares and the minimum marked applies. The eagle A
Std may only be used if a single legion or portion thereof is present. The legionary legate
commands and the A Std should be carried by a 16 figure double strength cohort. The
increase in the number of "Reg A" cavalry stems from the fact that Severus doubled the
number of the Equites Singulares Augusti and the Guard formed the nucleus of the
prototype of the later comitatus and thus are seen in fair numbers in most of the field
armies of the period. The number of regular cavalry may not exceed the number of
legionaries present. Auxillia may not outnumber legionaries. Auxiliary archers may not
outnumber those with JLS. It is during this period that specialization of weaponry really
comes to fruition. There were certainly HC, and maybe even heavier types, in the
legionary and Praetorian horse during this period as well as LC, many of which begin to
be separated out with there own ilk at the beginning of the next period. They may be run
as all HC, all LC, as HC with a detachment of LC, or as LC with a detachment of HC. It
is also during this period that archers appear in the legions, and were probably 1/4 of the
unit. If archers are used the maximum number of legionaries are reduced by the number
of archers used, i.e. there may never be more than 176 legionarii including archers,
though 44 of these may be bowmen. The catafractarii clibanarii were created at the very
and of the Severan period and may not have been operational until later so may only be
used in the post-Severan period. Based on Zosimus' comments, the Palestinian auxiliaries
are best seen as regulars from that province that carried a club in addition to their other
weapons and they may only be used in the post-Severan era. The triarii, an elite reserve
described by Vegetius for the antiqua legio are now attested epigraphically for the reign
of Diocletian (see the optimo triariorum of AE 1981,777).

Notes: This list covers the 3 Kingdoms (T) A.D. 220-280, the early Jin Empire (J) A.D.
280-420, Northern and Southern Dynasties (N) A.D. 420-580, and the Sui Dynasty (S)
A.D. 580-620. The 3 Kingdoms (Wei 220-265, Shu or Shu-han 221-263, 220-280)
succeeded the Han dynasty, followed their organization but did not have the training or
morale. The Jin Empire unified the 3 Kingdoms with the following major revolts: the
Liang (313-376), and the Nan Liang (397-414). Both established Turkic states in portions
of the Empire. The T'u-chueh (Turks) swamped the northern areas, creating the Northern
Dynasty in 386 and spawning the states of Bei Wei, Bei Li, and Bei Zhou. The Southern
Dynasty collapsed in 420 leaving behind the Qi, Song, Llang, and Chen states. Yang
Chien unified China under the Sui Dynasty between 581-618 by killing most of his
opponents in single combat. Your army must conform to T, J, N, and S, except the
Southern Dynasty uses the N listing but is not required to use T'u-chueh troops. Only one

?zxjan) within range. As soon as the C-in-C's command is subject to a "RETIRE"
order, the Kaviani and field throne are considered to be dismantled for transport. Types
as *** refer to the installation of Khusro II by the Byzantines. In this case, Sassanid
heavy cavalry all must be downgraded in morale, the Byzantine Guard and an Armenian
ally- general must be included, and no Yemeni, Jews, other ally-generals, pushtigban,
gyanavspar, or regular paighan are allowed. Types as # mean that these (paighan) must
be used if any mercenary infantry are, and may not be used with any other infantry.
Types as (Y) mean that minimums apply only if any Yemenis are used, and represent
campaigns in Yemen. If these troops are used, the C-in-C must be as EHC, and no
Kaviani, pushtigban, gyanavspar, asvaran, paighan, elephants, Royal Archers, Kushans,
non-Yemeni ally-generals, or more than 18 Immortals may be used. The "Irr A" option
represents a national struggle (Homerites) to evict Ethiopian overlords, the subject of the
first campaign. If "Irr A" Homerites are used, there must be a Yemeni ally-general.
Pushtigban are the shah-an-shah's mounted guard, and when the C-in-C is in the field
throne, the unit must be deployed within 160 paces. The C-in-C may move from throne
to guard, or the reverse, without changing the number of figures in the unit, by spending
one bound in contact with both. Command points must be spent for the pushtigban unit
in any case.

Line 8: Change "0-50" to "0-1/4"
Add after remarks: Reevaluation of the evidence in Procopius and Agathias points to the
fact that the heavy throwing weapon was not as widespread amongst the Germanic tribes
as was previously thought, hence the reduction of HTW to one half of the foot warriors.
Also, evidence in these same authors, as well as several others, shows that there were
more Frankish horsemen than generally believed. Much of the argument for the paucity
of Frankish cavalry is based upon the statements of Byzantine historians who compared
the importance of Frankish horse in relation to Frankish foot with the importance of
Byzantine horse and foot. Obviously in the Byzantine army where cavalry could easily
form more than half of any given force, even 20% or so of horsemen in an opposing army
would seem insignificant, thus the comments on the lack of numbers and importance of
Frankish horse -- this was compared with the Byzantine army. Other non-Byzantine
historians tell a different story, thus the increase in numbers.

Notes: This list covers the Huns from their first contacts with the Alans until the breakup
of their empire. The list is divided into an early period (E) from 374-405 and a late period
(L) from 405-466. The minimums marked * apply only if any allies/subject other than the
Alans are used. The early period represents the great migration of the Huns while the
later period portrays the Huns after they settled on the Hungarian plain (Alfold) and built
an empire. Recent research show the Alfold could not support the large number of horses
that the nomadic Huns required and as a result many settled down and fought more in the
fashion of some of their Germanic subjects and opponents, i.e., as MI. Thus some
historians have seen the great battle at Campus Maricius as a clash of two infantry
armies.

Notes: The chaos of this period makes a listing of the dynasties and independent states
almost impossible. Dynasties, states, various tribes, and splinter groups existed. Rebels
and bandits also controlled states. One of these, the Xi Xia, actually survived until 1227.

Notes: The (E) period (A.D. 802 to 1150) of this list covers the founding of the Khmer
Empire to it's rise and dominance of southeast Asia. At its height, under Suryavarman II,
the empire stretched from the South China Sea to mid-Burma, from China to Malaya. The
(L) period begins at 1150, when the empire starts its decline and lasts until 1353 with the
final sack of the capital, Angkor, by the new Siamese (Thai) states. Troops, minimums,
upgrades, and reductions labeled (E) or (L) are available only in that period. Troops not
labeled either (E) or (L) are available in either period. This list differs from that published
in SPEARPOINT Vol. 3 No. 1 In that the pre-empire Chenla Kingdom period (A.D. 540
to 802) is not covered. In addition to the time period restrictions, items marked * are
available, and their minimums apply, only if the King is C-in-C. Minimums marked **
apply only if any Tribals (including generals, excluding elephants) are used. Tribal
generals may only command Tribal or Luovan troops as they represent either native
Khmer or Luovan Chieftains. Items marked *** apply only if any Chams are used. Those
marked **** apply only if any Burmese are used. No Khmer army may have more than
14 elephants including generals mounts. "Reg C" Skirmishers cannot be used with Tribal
Infantry as they represent the transition from monarchial muster to a standing imperial
army. All Khmer horses are elephant proof. All non-Khmer or Tribal troops ignore the
sacred aspects of the PAS. The tactic of Khmer LC transferring from horseback to
elephant is best reflected by having the optional LC detachment. LMI and LI B/CB-
armed troops were used either separately or combined with JLS-armed troops. The option
to replace the B with CB reflects the use of this weapon in limited numbers after
exposure to it during Cham attacks in the late 1200s. Maiden Guard troops can only be in
the C-in-C's command. Boats are allowed for any non-elephant or chariot troop type.
Elephants that are detachments of regular foot units cannot have LC detachments.

Notes: This list covers the Byzantine Army at the apogee of its power under the three
great soldier emperors (Nikephoros Phokas, John Tzimiskis, and Basil II) until the
disaster of Manzikert. During this period the armor became increasingly heavier and the
number of paid professionals in the army was increased. After A.D. 1000 the theme
system was dissolved, the former thematic soldiers (stratiotai) being recruited as paid
soldiers and supplemented by mercenaries both of which led to the augmentation of the
armies offensive potential. The end of the theme system and the lack of funds to pay the
new professional and mercenary forces led to the disaster at Manzikert, where the army
was characterized as deficient in numbers, equipment and morale.
BOOK III
Generalizations (All notes are in addition to those already contained in Book III, except
for the notes to the completely revised lists, which stands alone. If contradictory, notes
contained in this revision prevail.)
1. A general fights, and counts towards any ratios, as the remainder of his element.
2. When "0-5/general" or similar is used it means: up to 5 figures of that type in each
command of the specified type.

Note: If any knights or ministeriales have the optional JLS, all must. No knights or
ministeriales may have JLS if any K are used. Armies must be either Imperial or Feudal.
Either army may use any of the generals above. Imperial armies may use up to 11
German Feudal knights without using any German Ally-generals; for each further group
of up to 11 German Feudal Knights used, one German Ally-general must be used and he
must command those knights. These mandatory German Ally-generals may be
downgraded to Sub-generals only if no more than 1/2 of the K used are upgraded to
EHK. German Ally-generals may not command regulars, foreigners or ministeriales.
Feudal armies may not use any regulars or ministeriales. Minimums marked * apply only
if any troops so marked are used. Minimums marked ** apply if any Slavs are used.
Minimums marked *** apply only to Imperial armies. Each Gleven Crossbowman used
replaces a Crossbowman. German Knights and Ministeriales K dismount with 2HCW.
Any Foreign Mercenary Knights may be specified before the game as dismounting with
2HCW. Other cavalry dismount with JLS (and/or bow if carried. Units containing
German knights or ministeriales may fight mounted in wedge.

have a staff of "Irr B" Nobles, except a Communal/Town Ally-general may instead serve
with a close order infantry unit, and the Teutonic Order Ally-general, who must have a

Notes: This list represents the larger Imperial towns and leagues they founded, as well as
those communes able to field armies. More than 12 peasants may not be used with
Teutonics, Feudal Allies, Mercenaries, Artillery, or more than 6 City Gleven Nobles.
Teutonics, Swiss and Eastern Europeans may not be used together. The Feudal Ally-
general commands only Feudal Ally troops. A Swiss Ally may command any Mercenaries
or Town/Communal troops in addition to commanding all Swiss, and a Teutonic Order
Ally may command Mercenaries and may substitute as a Feudal Ally-general, allowing
the use of Feudal Ally troops, who then serve
under his command. Town/Communal Ally-generals must command at least 64 close
order Town/Communal troops, and may also command Mercenaries and City Gleven.
Minimums marked *, ** or *** apply if any troops of that origin are used. All units
containing K may fight mounted in wedge.
