Mobile devices have touchscreens which enables us to use our fingertips to operate them. Some common mobile touch
features are given below.

Multitouch It is the devices ability to sense a touch at two or more places at the same time.

Touch flow It is the ability of the screen to recognize a finger moving across the screen.

Tap Select with a single tap.

Drag Items are moved on the screen.

Touch and Hold Touch that is longer than a tap, used usually to select an item.

Flick Flick to scroll up/down or go from side to side.

Pinch It is generally used to zoom out pictures or text.

Spread Similar to pinch but done in the opposite direction to zoom in.

Geo-Tracking

Recording the location of a mobile device and


using it to track its movement is known as Geo-
tracking. Some characteristics of Geo-tracking
are:

factors such as GPS location data, WIFI, and
cell tower information.

device, and applications or programs can track
the location of the device based on that data.

Mobile devices are capable of connecting

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is a short-range but high-speed wireless


technology. Some important points to remember
about Wi-Fi are:
Wi-Fi is governed by the IEEE 802.11
standards maintained by the IEEE 802
LAN/MAN Standards Committee.
Mobile devices often are Wi-Fi capable.
The older model of the Wi-Fi, 802.11g
standard provides speeds of up to 54Mbps.
The latest standard in use is 802.11n. It
facilitates speeds of up to 150Mbps per
channel (up to 600Mbps total).

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless protocol used with mobile devices and laptops.
When Bluetooth devices connect to each other it is known as pairing.
Bluetooth can be used to create personal area networks (PANs).
The key features of Bluetooth are wide availability, low power use, and low cost.

Email configuration settings are almost same for

For POP3 accounts, enter the mail servers SMTP
and POP3 address followed by the username and
password.
For Microsoft Exchange accounts, enter email
address, user name and password, and the name
of the Microsoft Exchange server.
For a Gmail account, enter the email address and
the password.

Email Ports

A port is an addressing location on a device or an application where data can be sent or received.
Sometimes port numbers are entered when configuring email settings for various devices.
Most email servers use secure connections for email transmission.
They usually use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) to create secure
connections.

Helps to have a copy of the data incase of losing
data from the device or the device itself.
Can synchronize any types of data including
music, videos, pictures, contacts, programs, and
email.

There are tools used to help protect mobile


devices and the data stored on them, if the
device is lost or stolen.

Passcode Locks

A passcode can be an alphanumeric password or


a set of numbers that you need to enter to use a
device.
It is called a screen lock on some devices and it
works similar to a password-protected
screensaver on a desktop.
It can be a four to ten digit PIN on some
devices.
If the device is idle for some time it locks up
and the user must then enter the PIN to unlock
the device.

Logon Restrictions

In addition to using a passcode lock, many


devices include failed logon restrictions.
If an unauthorized user tries to access the
device and enters the incorrect pin/passcode,
the device may block access after several tries.
The authorized user may have to access a
website to enter more credentials to unlock
device in such cases.
In some cases, it can be specified in the settings
by the authorized user to delete all user data if
a certain number of wrong passcode attempts
are made.

Locator Applications

Several applications are available to report the


location of a lost or stolen mobile device.

These applications use the GPS feature of the


mobile device to identify the near-exact
location.

Viruses on mobile devices are not as prevalent as on desktops, but they do exist.

A mobile virus can quickly drain the phones battery,
delete data, or even corrupt its features.
Some viruses may send emails and SMS or make
expensive calls, or take pictures and videos using the
mobile device without authorization.
The best way to prevent and protect mobile devices
against viruses is to buy apps from authorized Apple,
Android, and Microsoft online stores.

Remote Backup

Many mobile devices can store data in the cloud.

Android-based devices allow you to back up all data to
Google cloud.
Windows 8 uses Windows Azure-based technologies for
