Enigma: Getting Started

This tutorial will help you to get started using Enigma. Enigma is software that allows
you to quickly and easily reprogram your M-Audio or Evolution MIDI controller by
building “presets”. These “presets” can be used to control different hardware and
software. Enigma provides a graphical representation of your device, and has a library
for a variety of different software and controls that you can “drag and drop” onto your
device. Of course, if your software is not part of this library, you can still use Enigma to
quickly type in the appropriate controller information.

When Enigma first launches, you should see your attached MIDI controller at the top of
the list with a “red” dot to the left. This indicates that Enigma recognizes your controller.
You must first create a “user bank” before you can build or edit any “presets”. To do
this, click the “+” button in the bottom left corner of Enigma.

After clicking the “+” you will see a User Bank filled with Untitled presets. All of the
controls for these presets is turned off, including the sustain pedal, pitch, and mod
wheels.

For this reason, it is recommended that you copy the default bank of presets for your
device, into the newly created User Bank. To do this, click on the defaults for your
device, then drag and drop it onto the user bank. This is all done in the top left window
of Enigma labeled “Devices and Files”.
Now the User Bank will be renamed to match the Defaults Bank (PC only), so you will
want to double click it to rename it. You can distinguish between Enigma’s defaults and
your user bank (Your Device Name Defaults) because it will be bold (PC) and have a red
dot (PC), and an orange dot (Mac).

Now you can begin editing the presets in your User Bank to control your different
hardware and/or software. First, click one of the presets in the list to select it for editing.
You can also double click presets to rename them. Gmedia’s MiniMonsta is what we are
using for this tutorial.

Enigma has a “Library” with a list of different programs and plug-ins, and the respective
“controls” available for MIDI assignment. The “Library” can be accessed by clicking the
button in the top right corner of Enigma.
To assign one of the “controls” to a knob, fader, or button, simply drag and drop it where
you want it assigned. Double clicking a knob, slider, or button will open editor window,
and you can see your newly assigned parameter. (* The Editor on Macintosh systems
looks slightly different than the picture below)

If the device or program you are using is not part of Enigma’s library, you can manually
type in the parameters. These parameters are usually found on a MIDI implementation
chart in the manual for your hardware or program. Please consult with your vendor to
find this information.

If your keyboard has different zones (Keystation Pro 88, Axiom, Ozonic), you can adjust
the key range for each zone with Enigma. Simply click the left or right edge of the zone
and drag to resize.

If your MIDI controller has assignable pads (Trigger Finger, Axiom), you can also use
Enigma to assign MIDI notes to these pads. Select “MIDI Notes” from the “library”.
Note that the first “note” listed, “C – 2” is actually note C negative 2, and not note C 2.
For the Trigger Finger, you must drag and drop the notes onto the Note portion of each
pad. (They can be dropped anywhere on the pads for the Axiom series). The “CC” and
“PGM” sections are used for assigning Continuous Controller and Program change
messages.

Once you have finished building your presets, you must load them into your devices
memory. First, make sure the “user bank” you’ve been using is selected. On a PC, click
the button with the 2 arrows pointing to the right. On a Mac, click the button with the
arrow pointing straight up. This will send the currently selected bank to your device.

** After loading a bank of presets into your device, you must “recall” a preset for the
new changes to take effect. Please refer to your user guide for recalling presets.**

If you have already edited and stored presets directly from your MIDI controller, you can
use Enigma to save these changes to your computer. First, you need to “download” the
presets from your device into Enigma. This is done by pressing the button with the
downward pointing arrow.

Windows Macintosh
* PC Only * After “downloading” the presets into Enigma, they will appear in bold font.

You can now drag and drop these “presets” to a “user bank”. Again, the presets can be
renamed by double clicking them. ** You must “store” your edited preset to one of the
memory locations on your controller before it can be downloaded into Enigma**

Be sure to save your work before exiting Enigma or it will be lost. PC: If you don’t
choose File>Save before exiting, it will prompt you to save before exiting, click “OK” to
save your changes. Changes are automatically saved on exiting on a Mac.

More information and a full description of the program can be found under the Help
Menu in Enigma.
