Display panel
On the display panel, there are five displays which provide information about the sta-
tus of the argon plasma generator.
With monopolar applications, the argon plasma generator monitors the connection
between the neutral (patient return) electrode and the patient, provided that one of
the recommended split (dual) neutral electrodes is used. The Patient electrode traffic
light indicator indicates the quality of the connection. The traffic light indicator lights
green or greenish yellow when the neutral electrode is properly connected to the pa-
tient. The traffic light indicator lights yellow if the neutral electrode is not connected
optimally to the patient. If the neutral electrode is not properly connected to the pa-
tient, the traffic light indicator lights up red. An alarm tone sounds at the same time.
The argon plasma generator is equipped with safety functions. It independently de-
tects faults during the self-test and certain other faults during operation. The Func-
tional error indicator signals whether a safety shutdown or a fault in the argon plasma
generator has occurred. As soon as a fault is detected, the Functional error indicator
lamp lights red. An alarm tone sounds at the same time and the argon plasma gener-
ator no longer outputs any power.
The argon plasma generator also carries out checks during monopolar cutting to de-
termine that an electrode suitable for cutting has been selected and that the selected
cutting power is high enough. The Dosage error indicator lamp lights yellow if an elec-
trode that is not suitable for cutting has been selected or if the power setting is too
low.
The argon plasma generator monitors the gas flow. If there is not enough argon gas
in the gas cylinder, the Gas shortage display lights up yellow. The Gas blockage display
lights yellow when a gas blockage occurs.

has been selected incorrectly
Cutting and coagulation can be carried out with a monopolar handle with buttons.
The monopolar handle can only be activated using the buttons on the handle body.
The yellow button is for cutting and the blue button is for coagulation. A foot switch
is not required.
Cutting and coagulation can be carried out with a monopolar handle without but-
tons. The monopolar handle can only be activated using a foot switch. The yellow
pedal on the foot switch is for cutting and the blue pedal is for coagulation.
If a bipolar instrument is connected in addition to the monopolar handle, it is possible
to switch over between monopolar and bipolar use (see section 6.1.1 Activating the
operator control panel on page 49).
Non-contact coagulation with an argon gas supply is possible with an Arco handle
with one button. Both non-contact coagulation with argon gas and monopolar cut-
ting with high-frequency current are possible with an Arco multipurpose handle with
two buttons. The Arco handles can only be activated via the buttons on the handle
bodies. The blue button is for coagulation and the yellow button is for cutting. A foot
switch is not required.

Fig. 3.13 Use with an Arco handle without keys
Cutting and coagulation can be carried out with a bipolar instrument. The bipolar in-
strument can be activated using a foot switch. The yellow pedal on the foot switch is
for bipolar cutting and the blue pedal is for bipolar coagulation. With the aid of the
automatic function, bipolar coagulation can also be activated by measurement of the
tissue resistance.
If a bipolar instrument is connected in addition to the monopolar handle, it is possible
to switch over between monopolar and bipolar use (see section 6.1.1 Activating the
operator control panel on page 49).
For monopolar cutting, five different operating modes can be selected on the argon
plasma generator. The Mono CUT operating mode is the default mode. For the Pulse
and Blend operating modes, an effect level must also be selected. The previously se-
lected effect level remains set for the next time the mode is used.
The cutting power must be reset for each patient and each time an electrode, the ap-
plication or the operating mode is changed.
Both monopolar handle and Arco multipurpose handle are suitable for monopolar
cutting.
For non-contact argon plasma coagulation, only the preset Argon COAG operating
mode can be used on the argon plasma generator.
The argon plasma generator automatically switches to Endoflow mode when special
probes are used. The Endoflow display lights. In Endoflow mode, the output power is
restricted and the gas flow rate reduced.
The argon plasma coagulation power must be reset for each patient and each time a
probe, the application or the operating mode is changed.
For bipolar cutting, in addition to the preset Bipo CUT operating mode, the Pulse
mode can be selected on the argon plasma generator.
The cutting power must be reset for each patient and each time an electrode, the ap-
plication or the operating mode is changed.
In Pulse mode, in addition to the cutting power, the coagulation power must be set.
The power settings control when switching between cutting and coagulation occurs.
The automatic function may not be used for bipolar cutting.
For bipolar coagulation, only the preset Bipo COAG operating mode can be used on
the argon plasma generator.
The coagulation power must be reset for each patient and each time an electrode or
the application is changed.
The Automatic function enables bipolar coagulation to be activated by measuring tis-
sue resistance.

page 51).
3. Connect the bipolar cable to the bipolar instrument.
The bipolar cable is now completely connected.
The bipolar instrument is connected.
6 Operation
Only qualified specialists may use the argon plasma generator. Only qualified sur-
geons may treat patients using instruments connected to the argon plasma genera-
tor.
The surgeon providing treatment is responsible for weighing the risks of treatment
against the benefits.
Please observe the instructions for use for the instruments.
The argon plasma generator must always be cleaned and disinfected prior to treat-
ment (see chapter 7 Reprocessing on page 83). This also applies to initial treatment.
The accessories must also be disinfected. The instruments and the instrument cables
must be sterilised.
Functional testing must always be carried out on the argon plasma generator prior to
treatment (see section 6.1.4 Carrying out functional testing on page 51).
After treatment, the argon plasma generator, the instruments and the accessories
must be reprocessed (see chapter 7 Reprocessing on page 83).
Several instruments can be connected to the argon plasma generator at the same
time. However, an instrument can only be activated if the operator control panel for
the desired use is activated and the power settings are displayed.
If only one instrument is connected, the associated operator control panel is activated
automatically. If an Arco handle is connected, the operator control panel for non-con-
tact argon plasma coagulation is activated automatically.
If both a monopolar handle with buttons and a bipolar instrument are connected at
the same time, both operator control panels are activated.
Only if both a monopolar handle without buttons and a bipolar instrument are con-
nected at the same time must the operator control panel for the desired use be acti-
vated in order to assign the foot switch to the desired use.
It is possible to switch between the operator control panels for monopolar and bipo-
lar use. Switching over between the operator control panels can be carried out both
by hand and with the aid of a foot switch with switch-over key.
As soon as switching over between the operator control panels has been carried out
by hand, the switch-over key on the foot switch also reacts. Power settings are only
shown on the operator control panel for the selected application.
Requirements
A monopolar handle without buttons and a bipolar instrument are connected
Procedure
1. Activate the operator control panel for the desired use.
To do this, briefly press any button on the operator control panel for the desired
use. Or activate the switch-over key on the foot switch.
The operator control panel is activated, the power settings are displayed.
For both monopolar applications and argon plasma coagulation, a neutral electrode
(patient return electrode) must be correctly positioned and applied as specified to the
patient's skin. Split neutral electrodes are recommended.
The neutral electrode must be attached at least 15 cm away from the surgical site. The
high-frequency current flow path between the active electrode and the neutral elec-
trode must be as short as possible.
The argon plasma generator can only monitor the connection between a split neutral
electrode and the patient's skin. The Patient electrode traffic light indicator indicates
the quality of the connection. If the neutral electrode is not connected properly, the
traffic light indicator lights up red (see Fig. 3.9 on page 25, No. 1). In this case, the in-
strument cannot be activated.
Requirements
The argon plasma generator is on.
The neutral electrode cable is connected to the argon plasma generator.
Procedure
1. Apply a neutral electrode to the patient's skin in the correct position and accord-
ing to guidelines.
2. Connect the neutral electrode to the neutral electrode cable.
The neutral electrode is attached.
3. Check the Patient electrode traffic light indicator.
4. If the traffic light indicator system lights up red, improve the connection between
the neutral electrode and the patient.
If the traffic light indicator lights yellow, check the neutral electrode connection
and improve if necessary.
The traffic light indicator lights green, greenish yellow or yellow.
Check the connection between the neutral electrode and the patient.
Before treatment can be started, functional testing must be carried out (see section
6.1.4 Carrying out functional testing on page 51). The power settings must also be ad-
justed (see section 6.1.5 Adjusting power settings on page 56).
If treatment had to be interrupted because the neutral electrode was no longer prop-
erly connected to the patient, it may be continued as soon as the Patient electrode
traffic light indicator lights green, greenish yellow or yellow.
During treatment, the traffic light indicator must be continuously monitored.
An activation tone signals that high-frequency current is being supplied to the instru-
ment. The volume of the activation tone can be adjusted by means of the volume
regulator (see Fig. 3.2 on page 18, no. 2). Adjustment of the volume only affects the
activation tone. The setting has no effect on the volume of the alarm tones. The acti-
vation tone cannot be shut off completely.
Procedure
1. To lower the volume, turn the volume regulator to the left.
To raise the volume, turn the volume regulator to the right.
The volume has now been adjusted.
Requirements
