Capstone Proposal

Architecture is the process of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and other

physical structure. As the years have gone by I have been more and more interested in

architecture. Physics, math and drawing are just a few of the concepts needed in architecture. I

consider myself a very mathematical person as well as a creative thinking one. I enjoy drawing

and designing which is definitely also a big part of architecture. My passion for this field of work

is not just driven by these, it is also driven by the interests I have for different cultures.

Architecture is often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. It is different all around

the world. There is also a lot of historical meaning behind architecture. Historical civilizations

are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements. By completing this

Capstone project on my chosen topic, architecture, I hope to learn more about this career path

as well as grow my interest and passion for it.

My career goal is to pursue a career in architecture. This career path takes a lot of effort

and dedication. Without the passion for the craft, there is so reason to be an architect. I already

have a lot of knowledge in this area. I have researched this career path before and

acknowledged the steps to pursuing this career. I know that math and design are very big

concepts in this area of work. I also know that architecture has developed and is always

developing bigger. For example, in the past blueprints were all drown out and done by hand,

whereas now all blueprints are design and created on computer programs. Although I have a lot
of knowledge in architecture, there is still far more that I don't know about it. Some

information that I have learned from researching is that architecture comes from Greek. I also

learned that structural engineering is incorporated in architecture. What is structural

engineering? It is mainly a sulo-division of civil engineering in which structural engineers are

trained to understand, predict, and calculate the stability, strength and rigidity of built

structures for buildings and non-building structures. From researching architecture, I also

learned that there are many different types of architects: Residential Architects, Commercial

Architects, Interior Designers, Green Design Architects, Landscape Architects, Urban Designers,

and Industrial Architects. This is just a small portion of research information about architecture

that I have learned.

My Capstone project is on architecture. With the knowledge I already have, as well as

the research I will do, I will create a project that will connect to my career goal in architecture.

There will be many layers to this project. The first step in the progression of this project will be

to complete a formal paper. This paper will include detail and research on architecture, my

career goal, education or training needed, etc. The second portion to my project will be the

physical product. I will be making three blueprints to three different structures or buildings. To

create this I found a computer program called Smartdraw which allows me to create and

design these blueprints. After that is finished I will be making a model of the blueprints. This

model will either be constructed or created from a 3D printer. As I create these model, I will be

taking pictures and videos that I can later include in my portfolio and/or my final presentation.

The third part to my capstone project will be volunteering or visiting a construction site. This

will lead on to the next step of the project which is writing a report/journal of my experience at
the construction site (what I learned, what I observed, etc.). I will take notes and/or pictures

that I will later include in my portfolio and/or final presentation. At this point, I will be working

on my portfolio. The portfolio will include records of my progress that demonstrates my

journey throughout the entire Capstone project. Finally, I will create a formal presentation on

my Capstone presentation, showing my progress and final product of my work, as well as what I

learned from this project. Expected due dates are listed in the timeline.

This Capstone project will allow me to research and learn a lot as well as experience

architecture from hands on projects. Since architecture is the career path that I am most

interested in, this project will allow me to learn and develop my understanding in the field. The

research portion of this project builds my information knowledge. The hands on project part of

the Capstone will develop my understanding in the creation of the craft. All around, I am certain

that I will gain a lot of useful tools and information that will help me in the future. I am also

hoping that this Capstone project will also grow my passion for architecture and drive me to

work harder to achieve my career goal.
