Melody

Vocabulary:
Melody (the tune of a song), pentatonic scale (a five note scale.

Learning Objectives:
The learner will sing Ricos Pizza Restaurant using the D-pentatonic scale.
The learner will create their own movements to accompany the text in Ricos Pizza
Restaurant.

NC Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives:


2.ML.1 Apply the elements of music and musical techniques in order to sing and play
music with accuracy and expression.

Procedure:

- Have students get in a circle on the floor of the classroom. Good morning
everyone! Come sit in a circle on the floor! Start a slideshow reviewing the
previous lessons concept of pentatonic scale. Remember our last lesson
when we talked about the pentatonic scale? How many notes are in the
pentatonic scale? (The answer should be a five-note scale. Bonus points for
solfeggio included.)
- To transition to the next lesson, tell students a story about loving pizza. Our
next song is about a pizza restaurant! Keep a steady beat on the floor with
the tips of your fingers. Sing the song, Ricos Pizza Restaurant excluding the
B section. Awesome job! Stand up and lets move around the room to the
MOOD of the song while I sing it again. What does the word mood
mean? If the song makes you happy, show me how you would move if you
were happy. The same if you are anxious or hungry applies here! (How the
style of the song makes you feel.) Sing Ricos Pizza Restaurant excluding
the B section while moving around the room.
- Great job everyone! Now that youve heard me sing it a few times, Im
going to sing a line and I want you to sing it back to me. Sing the A section
to Ricos Pizza Restaurant line by line while incorporating the cheorography
to the song. Once the piece is learned by the students, change the slide to a
blank chart. Continue to tell students the story about loving pizza. There is
more to the song, but first we have to fill in this chart so we can be ready to
sing the B section. Fill in the chart on the slideshow to list the different sizes,
toppings, and crusts, then teach the B section to the song using
cheoreography.
- Awesome job! Now, we are going to get back into our circle, kids should get
back into the circle and we are going to sing this song with our movements!
Sing the A section Ricos Pizza Restaurant while dancing and moving in the
middle of the song. STOP! I am now taking (INSERT NAME)s order
(because you stopped in front of the student). Lets sing to him/her this B
section so we can make their pizza. Sing B section. Now, (INSERT NAME)
you are now hired to Ricos Pizza Restaurant, and you can now take
someone elses order. Repeat a few times.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed by their consistency in pitch while singing Ricos Pizza
Restaurant.
Students will be assessed by their ability to keep a steady beat while singing Ricos Pizza
Restaurant.
Students will be assessed through question and answer about the previous pentatonic
lesson and vocabulary expansion.

Extension:
(How would you build upon these concepts in subsequent lessons?)
Elaborate on form more, since this lesson had an A section and a B section, it would be
great to branch off and teach a lesson on ABA form using a song such as Shoo, Fly!
