On 19 September 32 years ago one of the biggest tragedies in the history of Mexico struck
when residents faced the force of nature and were left paying a high price.

EARTHQUAKE REVEALED VULNERABILITY AND SOLIDARITY

Residents in Mexico City have the date etched on their minds, and they will always
remember it as the event that made them realize just how vulnerable they were but at the
same time showed them the solidarity among the people in Mexico.

The 1985 earthquake struck Mexico City during the early hours of 19 September, and it
was recorded as a magnitude of 8.0, which had a Mercalli intensity of IX, which was said
to be violent.

The earthquake caused a great deal of serious damage to the region around the Greater
Mexico City area, and it was reported that around 5,000 people lost their lives during the
earthquake. The events surrounding the earthquake 32 years ago included a foreshock
which was recorded at a magnitude of 5.2 that had occurred in May, the main earthquake
that occurred on 19 September and following this was two very big aftershocks.

The first of the aftershocks was reported on 20 September, and this was said to have
recorded a 7.5 magnitude, while the second aftershock occurred seven months later on 30
April 1986, and this recorded a 7.0 magnitude. They occurred just off the coast of Mexico
at the Middle America Trench, which was over 350 kilometers away. However, Mexico City
suffered a great deal of damage thanks to the magnitude of the earthquake and the fact
that Mexico City was built on an ancient lake bed.

EARTHQUAKE DID AROUND $4 BILLION DAMAGE TO MEXICO CITY

The earthquake was said to have cost around three to four billion USD in the damage that
occurred, with 412 buildings collapsing and 3, 124 being damaged seriously in Mexico
City.

After the earthquake, which lasted only minutes, five million people were left without any
electricity or water, while El Centro, the historic city, was left in pieces and hospitals,
cathedrals, museums, monuments and homes were destroyed. The neoclassical
centerpiece The Hotel Regis was nothing more than ash and rubble.

Three decades later El Centro shows almost no trace of the devastation caused by the
earthquake thanks to millions of dollars spent by Carlos Slim, a Mexican billionaire. Zones
beyond the reach of the tourists where codes and regulations do not matter have
continued to proliferate. Residents were left to rebuild their homes with whatever they
could find and continued with the struggle to access electricity and water. Around 60% of
the city now consists of informal, unregulated and vulnerable zones and the growth of the
settlements shows the persistence of inequality and poverty in Mexico City, and how
vulnerable it is to the next big earthquake.

Now on the anniversary of that earthquake, another has struck bringing many residents
worst fears to reality.
