1. INTRODUCTION .......................................................................................................................................... 4
The Model SB148 (SB148/01) and SB158 (SB158/01) are parts of a modular switching
system for use with ASLs precision resistance bridges.
They can be used to switch four terminal resistors and resistance thermometers (PRTs).
The differences between the various models are explained in the following pages, but
generally we will just refer to either the SB148 or SB158.
A typical system consists of one SB158 switchbox controller with optional computer interface
and several SB148 switchboxes. The SB158 contains a power supply for use by the
SB148s, local/remote mode select switch, rotary thumbwheel switches for manual control of
the Rt/Rs channel selector and bus drivers for the SB148 parallel channel select bus.
Each SB148 contains 10 relay switched 4 terminal inputs complete with pre-settable current
drives for powering deselected resistors or PRTs. The system is arranged so both PRT (Rt)
channels and standard resistor (Rs) channels can be switched. This allows a wide range of
PRTs to be used on one system.
On the front panel are fifty one 4mm sockets. Fifty of these are arranged in 10 columns of
five sockets; each set connects to one resistor or PRT. The channel selected is indicated by
an illuminated LED above the selected group of sockets. The top two sockets of each
column are the voltage input connections (V), the lower two are the current output
connections (I), and the centre terminal is the Rt/Rs measurement input ground connection.
The two BNC connectors to the left of the front panel are the Rt connections to the bridge and
the socket above them is the Rt/Rs measurement output ground connection to the bridge.
These connections, including the ground, are switched by relays to the currently selected Rt
channel.
On the right hand side of the rear panel are four BNC connectors. The top pair are wired in
parallel to the bottom pair, and to the front panel BNCs. This allows the Rt connections to be
daisy chained between switchboxes, with the leads to the bridge connected to the front of one
of the switchboxes.
The 25 way D type plugs in the centre of the rear panel are used to bus the resistor select
bus and power supplies between switchboxes. They are connected in parallel to allow daisy
chaining, as with the Rt connections. Finally, the two BNC connectors to the left of the rear
panel are the Rs connections, and are only used on switchboxes which have been preset to
select standard resistors.
The SB148/01 has the facility to drive deselected resistors or PRTs from a constant
d.c. current source. This allows them to be kept at their normal working temperature,
and so decrease settling time for each channel. The switch above each channel of
4mm connectors selects one of four preset standby currents.
As the SB148 switchbox except it has silkscreens showing the unit address and
standby currents.
The heating current is factory set for each channel over the range of 0.1 to 10 mA and is
independent of the resistor or PRT connected.
The SB148/01 allows the user to choose from up to 4 preset standby currents per channel, by
using the 4 position switch.
WARNING:
The power switch itself will be illuminated (green), when the SB158 power is switched
ON. Care should be taken not to limit access to the power ON/OFF switch.
The first SB148 switchbox in the system can have up to 4 channels allocated as Rs
channels.
Channels 9, 8, 7 and 6 are designated as the selectable Rt/Rs channels.
A pre-set Rs channel can be selected by the Rs thumbwheel rotary switch with the
system set for local operation.
The Rt channel can be selected by the thumbwheel rotary switch with the system set
for local operation.
Channel selection can be controlled locally via the thumbwheel rotary switches or
remotely via the optional interface.
The mode selection switch selects the required control mode, the LED indicates the
selected control mode.
The AC Power input unit incorporates a voltage selection tumbler, to enable the user
to match the SB158 to the local AC voltage supply, and two fuse holders. The correct
20mm fuses to install are as follows:
5.3. Bus-Out
The Bus-Out connector is located in the centre of the rear panel. The connector is a
25 way D type socket for power and data connection to the SB148 switchbox.
The chassis terminal can be used as a common earth point by electrical equipment.
It is connected directly to the instruments protective conductor terminal.
6. Installation
The supply voltage setting of the SB158 is shown on the power inlet socket on the
rear panel. Check that this corresponds to the local voltage and that the fuse installed
is as specified in section 5.2.1.
Lever open the power input unit from the top with a flat bladed screwdriver. Inside is a
plastic cam: remove this and replace it so that the voltage to be set is displayed
through the window.
See Figure 9.
Where fused power plugs are connected to the supply cable provided, the correct
fuse rating is 3 Amps. The supply cable provided with the SB158 is colour coded as
follows:
Ground Green/Yellow (Protective Conductor
Terminal)
Live Brown
Neutral Blue
WARNING
Ensure the power on the SB158 is switched OFF and the mains supply lead
is disconnected.
6.3.1. Connecting the SB148 to the SB158
Connect the SB158 Bus-Out connector to the SB148 Bus-In connector with the 25
way male to 25 way female ribbon cable provided.
Using a pair of coaxial leads connect the SB148 BNC connectors, marked Rt V and
I, on
the front panel or upper rear panel, to the precision resistance bridge BNC
connectors, marked Rt V and I respectively.
Using a pair of coaxial leads connect the SB148 BNC connectors, marked Rs V and
I, on the front panel or upper rear panel , respectively to the precision resistance
bridge BNC connectors, marked Rs V and I. This connection is only required if the
SB148 switchbox has any Rs channels assigned.
Connect the SB148 Bus-Out connector to the additional SB148 Bus-In connector with
the
25 way female to 25 way female ribbon cable provided.
Using a pair of coaxial leads connect the SB148 BNC connectors, marked Rt V and
I, on
the lower rear panel, respectively to the additional SB148s upper rear panel BNCs,
marked
Rt V and I.
Each Rt/Rs input channel has its own switched measurement ground connection.
Rt/Rs connecting cables that incorporate outer screens can be connected to the
measurement ground at this point.
Connect the measurement output ground from the SB148 switchbox to the Precision
resistance Bridge input ground terminal.
The diagram below shows the connection diagram for a 4 terminal resistor.
WARNING
The BNC connectors are isolated and are NOT to be used as earth connections.
NOTE! Always connect voltage (v) connectors before current (I), and disconnect
I before v.

Note: The digital lines (pins 1 to 14) use negative logic, hence logic 1 is represented by a
potential of 0V.
7. Manual Operation
To control a multi-channel switchbox system manually from the SB158, ensure the mains
power to the Precision Resistance Bridge and the SB158 are in the ON state.
Set the operator control mode of the SB158 to local with the mode selection switch, confirm
the local LED is lit.
The Rs standard resistor can be connected directly to the Precision Resistance Bridge
or to the first SB148 switchbox in the system.
For systems that have the Rs standard resistor connected to the SB148, select the
required Rs standard resistor with the Rs channel select rotary thumbwheel switch,
confirm the channel selected LED is lit.
Each SB148 switchbox has ten Rt channels available numbered 0 to 9, with each
switchbox having its own address numbered 00 to 60.
Select the required SB148 switchbox address with the first two Rt channel select
rotary thumbwheel switches.
Select the required Rt channel of the SB148 switchbox with the last Rt channel select
rotary thumbwheel switch, confirm the channel selected LED is lit.
8. Computer Interfacing
The SB 158 can be fitted with an optional RS232C serial digital communications interface or
IEEE488 parallel digital communications interface, providing remote control channel selection
from a computer.
RS232C communication is via a 25-pin D type plug located on the right hand side of the rear
panel.
The SB 158 RS232C interface can be configured by an 8-way DIP (Dual In-line Pin)
