Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
What does your home look like? What do you eat? Where do you sleep? Describe your habitat. As a
class, we will discuss the needs and the environment of other living things, with a focus on animal. I will read
a book to the class on lions, National Geographic Kids: Lions, as our introduction activity. Students will then
have the opportunity to create their own mini books on an animal of their choice. The students will create a
PowerPoint presentation of the animal they choose.
The students will use the link above for National Geographic Kids to select their animal under the section
titled Amazing Animals. They will watch a brief video on the animal. The students will be given a work sheet
to fill out while watching the video. Some questions on the sheet will include: What habitat does the animal
live in? What does the animal eat? What is a fun fact about this animal? The video and work sheet will take
the students 5 to 10 minutes depending on how many times they watch the video to record all the
information they need. After completing the video and worksheet, the students will create a PowerPoint that
includes a cover page, 5 slides of information including full sentences and pictures, and a closing page. There
will be an example of what the formatting of their books should look like up on the projector. I will be walking
around the room assisting students with creating their sentences. The PowerPoint will take around 30-40
minutes to complete depending on the students familiarity of PowerPoint. I will review the students work
with them and help them to create a complete and final product to present. Once they have the teachers
approval, they will record themselves reading the slides. We will all gather at the front of the class and have a
movie break with popcorn. I will play each of the presentations the students created. Finally, I will print the
slides out for the students, laminate them, and bind them together to make a mini book. The students will
add their personal creations to our classroom library.
